Time for Glenn to make the movie version of this and finally win an Oscar.

Totally agree, but I just hope she isn't toooo old now for the part. This was recorded 25 years ago and people's voices change. The movie will be huge regardless :)

Thanks a million times for posting this clip. Glenn Close is phenomenal, a force with which to reckon. Her interpretation of Norma Desmond is spot on! I only wish I were wealthy enough to have seen this astounding performance live. Some comments have noted that Ms, Close was not musically adequate however, I disagree emphatically; her superlative acting talent moots any vocal limitations. I didn't notice any though.

NORMA Ring out the old Ring in the new A midnight wish To share with you Your lips are warm My head is light Were we alive before tonight? I don't need a crowded ballroom Everything I want is here If you're with me Next year will be The perfect year JOE Before we play Some dangerous game Before we fan Some harmless flame We have to ask if this is wise And if the game is worth the prize With this wine and with this music How can anything be clear? Let's wait and see It may just be The perfect year NORMA It's New Year's Eve And hopes are high Dance one year in Kiss one goodbye Another chance, another start So many dreams to tease the heart We don't need a crowded ballroom Everything we want is here And face to face We will embrace The perfect year We don't need a crowded ballroom Everything we want is here And face to face We will embrace The perfect year JOE So, what time are they supposed to get here? NORMA Who? JOE The other guests. NORMA There are no other guests. Just you and me. I'm in love with you. Surely you know that JOE Norma... NORMA We'll have a wonderful time next year. I'll have the pool filled up for you. I'll open up my house in Malibu, and you can have the whole ocean. I have enough money to buy us anything we want. JOE Cut out that "us" business. NORMA What's the matter with you? JOE What right do you have to take me for granted? NORMA What right? Do you want me to tell you? JOE Norma, what I am trying to say is that I am the wrong guy for you. You need a big shot, someone with polo ponies, a Valentino... NORMA What you're trying to say is, you don't want me to love you. Say it! Say it! JOE Max. Get me a taxi. I had to get out I needed to be with people my own age To hear the sound of laughter And mix with hungry actors Underemployed composers Nicotine-poisoned writers Real people Real problems Having a really good time

muscle25ftl This is clearly the Best Broadway Musical I ever saw while I didn't see the original production due to the fact I was born 8 months before it opened in November of 1994 23 year later I finally see it on Broadway in this Acclaimed Revival and it was the best musical I ever experienced on Broadway! HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL BROADWAY FANS WHO WERE BORN IN 1994 should go see this magnificent revival before it departs June 25th 😀

I believe this is Kevin Anderson playing Joe Gillis in the NY production. Alan Campbell played him in the LA production. I remember that day so clearly: It was the final night of the L.A. run and every performance up until that night was sold out. As luck (or a miracle) would have it, I ended up getting "scalped" for a single, front row mezzanine seat. Missing that show would have been the ultimate crime. And to top it off, the Shubert Theater and complex has since been demolished (so sad). So many great memories of shows at that theater.
@Gaffahead9 жыл бұрын
Kevin Anderson left the show before the infamous firing of Patti LuPone from the original London production. He didn't the chance to play Joe on Broadway.

Alan Campbell did both LA and NY. The only one to not make the transfer was Judy Kuhn, because she got pregnant. Therefore, Alice Ripley stepped in for her.

In fairness to Patti Lupone, Glenn Close was just a better actor for the role. I love Patti’s voice- but Glenn conveys more vulnerability and pathos. The producers did the right thing.
@MickeyFlipper2 күн бұрын
@@GiftSparksI couldn’t agree more. I saw the stripped down revival 7 years ago and Glenn was magnificent!! She gave the character Norma a dimension that Gloria Swanson couldn’t. I actually felt sympathetic to Norma. Gloria portrayed her as crazy and eccentric. Where Glenn’s interpretation you actually realized that Norma was a product of an industry that shunned her hopes and dreams
