Nice video, I've had 48 cars, 911's,cayman,ferrari 348, scooby, evo,and my RX 8 is the best handling car I have driven. I agree as well about the cabin,just enough of what you need and nothing you don't.

Excellent review my man. As a fellow Rx8 enthusiast,owner I completely get everything you say here. I purchased mine over in the UK six years ago for just £1900 pounds..,.peanuts. Was a mint 228 bhp model.....since had a rebuild and tuning with porting blah blah and when driven how they are meant to be driven it's as fast as you need. I too get a little frustrated about all the crap that people write about them when they don't own one and know zip about them. They are not fragile, they don't drink oil...these are not NSU RO80,S...they are in my view the working man's exotica....something that is not the norm but can be enjoyed on ginger beer money for a champagne experience. I would urge anyone who owns one to hang on to it,it won't be too long before they are recognised. I'm continuing the development work on mine and it has been a car to stop me looking for anything else.....it's a keeper and promised too my son's one day. Love the channel, BRAP BRAP forever dude.

I have owned seven rotary Mazdas since the 70's. One RX3; two RX4; all three generations of RX7, with my first gen RX7 race-modified by Racing Beat with a turbo and ported 13B, cooling, suspension, ignition, exhaust, brakes mods and more; my second gen Turbo II RX7 and my third gen FD RX7 slightly modded; and my 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 bought new in 2008 for about $33K. I easily have over a million rotary miles driven on street and track. My 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 has some performance and reliability mods and is now insured as a Classic Car for $50,000 USD with no depreciation. Nothing drives like these cars, nothing. And I have owned other sports cars from Porsche, and also a modified 2008 Mazdaspeed3 GT. Cheers, thanks, and best to you.

Im just terrified of those apex seals. I see these all the time for about $8,000 with like 70k miles. Any other car and that sounds good. But with this car I have to worry about how it was taken care of and how soon those seals are going to go. I knew someone who bought one like that, and then it lost compression two weeks later. He sold it to someone who wanted to ls swap it.

You got to get a cheap auction one. One with specifically a broken engine. I’m local to a reputable rotary builder. So that’s what I’d do. Cheap auction rx-8 and the money saved vs just buying used and running I can have a rx-8 with a new rebuilt engine that would last me 100k miles. And be cheaper than normal used purchase.
@FUNKOfilms
@FUNKOfilms 4 жыл бұрын
@@drift400 Can the engine be rebuilt that easily? I mean I get that its a very simple compact design but I was under the impression that once those apex seals go that engine is as good as garbage at that point.

Every time I talk about wanting an Rx8 to other people everyone gives me so much crap and I explain to them that it has enough power and a unique engine. I also tell them that the suspension is damn near perfect but no one listens to me. I tell them that they could pickup a rolling shell for cheap and put a different engine in it because the chassis is solid but they still don’t listen. They’re loss I guess. Hopefully when I get enough money I can get one while they’re still cheap because it can only get slept on for so long.

Great video and very well said. The only people that speak negatively about the RX-8 are those who have never driven one or simply don't know how to drive. Just putting around town it definitely feels slow, but once you take it on some twisty roads and figure out how easily it eats up corners and that the engine can stay high up in the rev range as long as your heart desires it leaves you always hungry for more and the car and engine feel the exact same way. I will happily continue dailying my 2010 R3 for the foreseeable future because it really is the perfect daily sports car (which is also setup very similarly to yours). I do wish it had the same acceleration as my 1980 SA22C with a large streetport 70s 13B w/S5 rotors making roughly average 6 port renesis power and torque in a 2,300 lbs car and puts bus lengths on either a bone stock RX-8 and a good distance on my own RX-8, but straight line acceleration is where it ends. The RX-8 is just far better is every other aspect.

Great review, thanks. The car looks great in black. You say it’s under powered but what size engine is it please? I have a 2.3L 2004 and it’s the best car I have had the pleasure of owning. I also use it as a run around. It’s never broken down and hardly uses oil! I was lucky to find a second hand One owner low mileage RX8 and it still only has 38k on the clock. Living in UK is causing it to rust in places, so I might reluctantly sell it for something boring as I am now a grandad! Or keep it as a collectible. Lastly, this car saved my life. I was taking a very sharp blind bend at some speed when I hit several large pot holes. The car bounced around gracefully on all fours, skidded a little and continued on its way. On my return the next day, I saw a multi car accident on that spot.

I saw your videos last year about your RX-8 and i can definitely say you had convinced be on buying one. Had a good run and enjoyed the heck out of her for a year until it overheated (assuming a clogged radiator) so I've decided to go all in and rebuild her completely to where she deserves to be and not the rough state the previous owner left her. I've had so much fun driving her (even though I'm a little scared of going fast due to a bad accident a few months prior of my purchase with another car) and can definitely say, she drives so much better than any other sports car I've driven. I've never so stable and planted in a car. Hopefully I can make my 6-port 6-speed manual as good looking and as fun to drive as yours is. Thanks for being my inspiration! You understand this car so well. i let pretty much everybody, who wants to, drive my Rx-8 because it's fun, and fun is supposed to be shared. Most people never get the chance to drive a proper sportscar. Have some sympathy for them and let them have a go, they will be far too scared to go near the limit anyway. i kinda want it a little stiffer, but i'm afraid to change the suspension, because i don't want to ruin the handling. I don't want it to behave differently, i would like it to be the same, but about 10-20% more direct

I cannot imagine ever having your drifting skills but the fact that you can crank a perfect square corner at 30mph staying completely in your lane with no slide or tire squeal or excess noise is a real eye-opener for anyone around or in the car but officer was it really stunting LOL. You're definitely right about the power stock with a header was okay. Oh and also if your looking for some more things to do RX8 content about I would suggest an Gauge pod install/ fan relay switch. The handling is awesome, some what raw, minimal buffer zone, and very direct steering sensitivity, and you can turn the car by the throttle. 04 RX8 owner here, I daily mine year round in canada and absolutely love this car! I feel the exact same way as you though, the only thing it needs, for me was like 150hp more and it would be the perfect car. Can't wait to get some coilovers on mine as see how that changes things, mine is certainly a loud one with an Agency Power catless exhaust which makes the drive so much fun. And the deals are crazy, I got a previously never winter driven, ceramic coated, 69,000km RX8 for $8000 taxes in! Had it for over a year now and doing all the maintenance things and driving it correctly and I've had zero issues so far. Such an underrated car.

Hey! Stopppppp. People don’t need to know how good these cars are. I’m on the hunt for a second R3 so I can build one as a track car and keep my current one as a daily. They are suuuuch wonderful cars to drive. I’ve been preaching it for ages. The series 2 has really great improvements over the series 1. The only thing that sucks is you can’t divert the oil metering to a secondary reservoir like the Sohn adapter does. They significantly increased the over all oil metering in the series 2 to combat the reliability issues with the series 1. Of you run some protek R fuel lubricant as well you’re sitting pretty.
@3toedSloth75
@3toedSloth75 4 жыл бұрын
The SOHN isn't premix... premixing is when oil is added to the gas and injected through the fuel system. SOHN is more a clean oil adapter for the OMP (which still exists on the car).

I will attest to the side impact safety! I was in mine about two years ago and got impacted at around 50mph. The car did go up in flames, BUT I was able to get pulled from the car before it did and I walked away with a bad concussion and scapes from the glass shooting me from the side. I LOVED this car when I drove it. I had just decatted it so I was immensely sad when I could no longer drive it. It was cheap fun at $3700

Question for you: I see a lot of people rag on using an aftermarket steering wheel. Sometimes its about dropping the air bag, sometimes people say don't do it with stock seat belts. What do you think? I see you have an aftermarket wheel on some (all?) of your cars. I have one on my NB too, with stock seats and belts.
@TheSlipAngle
@TheSlipAngle 3 жыл бұрын
The seat belts are supposed to have a little give so your face hits the airbag and that's why people complain about doing it. Everything has risk associated with it. Some of my cars never had airbags or only had a driver's side. I also ride motorcycles so if given the option, I'd rather have a crash in my airbagless RX-8 that actually crash tests really well than crash in say my FD or on one of my motorcycles.

I just bought a 2005 RX-8 and it's having an idling issue once it gets warmed up. The previous owner replaced a few parts including the battery which I have seen could be the issue because the ECU basically forgets how to properly fuel the vehicle. But the scenario is that once the motor is warmed up the idle gets rougher and rougher until it cant sustain the idle and it cuts out. Does this sound like something that you hear regularly happening and how would you go about fixing the issue? It drives alright for the most part except that the throttle has a little bit of a laggy response but I'm guessing that would also be a linked issue with the current state of the idle. But other than that she purrs... Ideas on what needs to be done/fixed?

Not too stiff on our UK country roads. I would recommend them if you want to stay with Tein but go for the added stiffness. I have recently contacted Tein about increasing the spring rates further (14kg and 12kg). They replied by saying they do not have a spring rate limit and that I could purchase separate Tein springs for a stiffer feel on track.

Hello Quinn! Another very nice and informative video for the RX-8. I totally agree with you, it has perfect suspension and overall handling feel and capabilities. Moreover, it has also perfect steering feel, shifter and driving position. The RX-8 for me is a playstation on wheels. I bought mine back in 2006 and after 14 years of ownership, everything runs 100% perfect and I enjoy it every time that I am behind the wheel. I also believe that it is a very good looking car and that it is aging nicely. Even in 2020 it can make heads turn here in Greece, as RX-8's are well beloved cars and they are appreciated more nowadays for all the reasons that you have mentioned. Modern cars are full of technology yes, but they are lacking in terms of personality, fun factor and driver involvement. The RX-8 is an old school car that has these 3 virtues. Yes, it has its fair share of quirks as you have mentioned, but as you already know if maintained properly by an owner that knows about rotary engines, then everything is ok without any nasty suprises. I enjoyed this presentation and in the future please make more RX-8 videos. Keep up the good work!
