Hi, I watched this film with great interest, back in 1962 when I was aged 20yrs ( I was one of the youngest gangers on B R ) What I did not see on this film clip where was the look-out man , did they have on e ???, also when you had void sleepers ( thats sleepers that move up and down when trains pass over them ) you had to use void meters , these measure the amount of canisters of chippings required to pack the track with ( each canister equals 1/16 of a inch ) MARK.

barry uk when I started on the railway in 1982, we used to use LO’s but only if necessary or if there was a green card in the gang. I remember working up Whiteball tunnel near wellington when I first started, the Guys always used to take green guys there, we used to have an advance lo at the tunnel mouth and one on site, the trains where doing a. Ton and when they passed it was literally only 2 ft from me with my back against the tunnel wall. The good old days, I used to love it

in the past crafty film dealers have targeted our little collection to pirate footage for their own commercial gain. it is painful for us operating for the love of film preservation to see dvd's for sale containing footage conned out of us. we are so pleased so many people are watching the films we saved keep watching spread the word more to come.

Considering this was supposed to be a 'main' line not much in the way of 'lookout' was being done. Shame about the logo all the time, - I'm sure the 'original' didn't have anything like it on it. I'm surprised a few 'cans' of small ballast would have made much difference to the track bed under the sleepers. Funny also in a wheel barrow that didn't seen to have much in it they always had the right items needed for an assortment of jobs, especially if they didn't. know what problems they were going to find.

Interesting how many different systems have been developed to connect the rails to the ties/sleepers not only in the UK but also around the world during the 20th century. Chairs, plates, screws, bolts, spikes, springs etc. Of course some variation is due to different demands in terms of traffic intensity and the development of the ratio between labour cost and materials cost. Given the huge technical and economical importance, a universal best solution would probably have been found long ago if such a solution existed. With welded rails and concrete sleepers nowadays, it seems the solution converges towards some type of elastic steel bracket and a relativly simple plate between sleeper and rail.

It was a great pity that the purveyor of the video didd not do his research as they are violating copyright and adding their own crap across the screen is futile. I recognised the clip from Fastline Films 3 disk set. The copyright still rests with the British film institute and Fastline were granted a licence in 2007 and are available from Videoscene
