Yes Elmo's exasperation over the ridiculousness of the Pet Rock was echoed in 1975 when Gary Dahl first conceived of the idea. Many people thought, Really? How stupid do you think we consumers are? But maybe the country needed a bit of playful slliness at the time? Vietnam Fallout, Watergate. Maybe people needed to take care of something they knew they couldn't fail? Maybe it was just for the fun.
