What's very interesting about Pete is that he is like a time capsule himself: he still plays like a very good Liverpool drummer from about 1962. No more, no less. He didn't progress much, he didn't degrade much. When you watch him, it's like the time stood still.

Pete, I hope you read this. First, thanks for playing for all of us. When I heard that there was another Beatles drummer before Ringo, I was very curious. Now we can hear and see you in action, and I am enjoying your drumming. Second, it is clear to me what happened so long ago, both why you were so popular AND why the other 3 switched you out for Ringo. You have a more flashy drumming style, more "wow" drumming fills and strokes than Ringo. You are a real crowd pleaser, especially for the kids back in Liverpool that never heard anything like you before. I am sure that a lot of them came to see the Beatles mainly to see you, when their music was still under development. However, you have a flaw: your rhythm has moments of impreciseness here and there. I am not sure if you could have corrected that or not. I am plagued with the same thing when I play the piano. The neurons seem to lose track every now and then. Ringo is like a drum machine, always spot on, even when he varies the beat ahead or behind. Also, Ringo has a deeper sense of the music, adding subtle nuances, where you are more focused on the rhythm and making an amazing set of drum licks. As history has shown, the other 3 were aiming at something nobody had done before, beyond a crowd-pleasing rock-and-roll show. Hearing you, I don't think you could have gone there with them, while Ringo actually helped to lead them there. What makes me sad in all this is how the transition was handled. I think that they should have continued performing with you as the Beatles, while forming a new parallel group with another name, with Ringo, to do the studio stuff, eventually winding down the Beatles club phase. They also should have shared more of their financial success with you, of course. You definitely helped their popularity to grow, and to give them a platform and to just drop you was unjust. Thanks again.

Pete was criticized not for his drumming abilities, but because he dared to be authentically himself, expressing shades of emotion that were ahead of his time. This authenticity seemingly turned the "Fab Three" into the "Uncomfortable Three." Pete’s gifts and talents, like veins of gold, highlighted precisely what unsettled the image-driven machine. He was ousted for being the "weird guy," whose abilities aligned more with the raw brilliance of Syd Barrett than with the shallow bubblegum pop of the era. In the end, Pete truly was the BEST.
