One thing nobody seems to have touched on regarding the word "scop": in Old English/Anglo-Saxon, the letter combination SC was usually pronounced like Modern English's SH, meaning that "scop" would be pronounced the same way as "shop". Which in turn would mean that, if the title is indeed meant to be broken down into "Pet Scop", it would technically be pronounced the same way as "Pet Shop". And, considering the implications of what might really be going on here, that could very well be one of the most ominous puns in web series history.

I figured it was just called petscop like "Pets-Cop" as in you capture pets like cops capture criminals. With the pets being seen as misbehaving like criminals. And I say misbehaving as in they are running away from their would-be captor, you; not that I blame them for running away from whatever the protagonist is.

I'm very surprised that so far I haven't seen anybody investigate the story being told in Care's room. For me it was the most visceral part of the series and seems to indicate that the game was made by a very malevolent person. The story about "Care not growing eyebrows, you are secretly excited by this, you think about her in the bathtub, she'll appear limping from the darkness and I'll shoot her in the head..." it seems to be a HUGE lead in the mystery and nobody has done any real digging into it. For instance, WHO exactly will shoot her in the head? It seems to me that it is the game maker talking, not Marvin, who is the father. This part of the series implies violence, incest and also gets further elaborated when Paul captures Care and her reincarnation from the windmill friend is explained. Does anyone have any theories about this part of the game?

Indeed, that story was one of the juicier parts of the game (at least in the beginning), and no-one really seems to touch upon it.

I think that the constant de-personing (the child library, people being referred to as pets, the constant ambiguity between person and algorithm) is extremely telling of the work's themes. It meshes with the themes of abuse, as people are malleable, predictable. The chaos and obscurity of the overworld and the experience of Paul, and the way the game directly speaks to and references his personal life make it clear that Petscop is a work about the life of an object, the life of a person. In each person lies objecthood, the work tries to say.
@emthefruitygem6 жыл бұрын
The different characters illustrate different reactions to life as an object. The reactions range from controlling malevolence, to scientific pursuit of knowledge, to resentment, to panic, to despair. The paradox of objects, pets, having personalities and traits plays into the aforementioned theme, as does the prose on the dog struck by a car, the broken bird, the child library. Paul must sort through this whilst dealing with the troubles of his own path as an object, vulnerable, malleable, predictable. Let me know if you have anything to add or find anything wrong with my thoughts ^^

I know that the connection to the real life Candace Newmaker case kind of soured the foster care themes for a lot of people, but as someone who works as a case manager for foster children, i wish it was explored more. For example, i see the "child library" and the "you dont have to love them right away" as very very real day to day life. I work with kids who change homes night to night, and oftentimes the caregivers do pass around the children the same way one can give away a dog to a neighbor. Group homes do often sort of collect children and them dump them on other homes the way the child library works. In Amber, i see the fear of being put in a bad home, and a reluctance to even leave the abusive parents side. The devil you know is easier than an unknown. In Wavy and Randice i see a bonded pair of siblings, one who soothes the other of their anxiety and fear, even while Wavey's entry says hes also afraid. In Toneth i see severe disability that no person wants to work with. With our transporters, some will say things like "i feel sorry for you, you have the diabetic one today, you have insulin duty." I see something similar in Pen. "why bother? You wont make it no matter how hard you try." Most of all, the Pet Shop comparison truly works for me. The company i work for is being merged, so cases are being shuffled around. There is a severe pressure on case managers to get children adopted within a year. The Adoption and Safe Families Act passed in the US mandates that children must be reunited or put up for adoption in that time frame. On top of that, the high burnout rate means things slip through the cracks. I have a coworker with 40 children on their load. I worked 60 hours this week with only 12. There is a pressure on workers to get kids in and out, so they do end up placed in bad homes where foster parents are mad that these kids are traumatized. "show them theres nothing to be afraid of" turns into tricking and berating and trapping, and then returning because they wanted Care A, not Care NLM. Because Toneth has a broken leg and hes better off dead. Ive seen parents react like Anne at the end of the series. "Your new life letter" with frantic last goodbyes because the next visit is in a week. While i understand why things went the way that they did, and while i understand abuse within family units as a theme, abuse in the foster system is something i wish was kept as a through-line. The pet comparison was utterly brilliant, and i wish that the pets themselves were also explored more. Ultimately, children are often treated as pets, or gifts, or incinveniences who need to be rebirthed into a new and shiny pet. Nobody wants to close the loop, they just want to start over with a new kid they can rebirth into their ideal pet. Im rambling at this point. But i havent seen it talked about much from the perspective of the foster system, only that the comparison was there. I wanted to share some thoughts from that side of things.
@Popedishsoap Жыл бұрын
Wow, I appreciate your words and more than that, the work you and your coworkers do. Petscop hit home hard for me as I grew up in/around the foster care system as my mom got sick when I was a tween/early teen, and my non-verbal younger sister has a severe global development delay (which we also now know she has a genetic defect of missing half a chromosome), and (now moreso than ever) due to her size and aggression IS one of those "toneth" type kids you described. My mom doesn't understand why my sister's staff are constantly changing, but it's because as a 20 year old, she can be scary. We just had a situation on the weekend where she wanted to go in our car, and when we refused, it became a nightmare of egress, neighbors looking wide-eyed at this 5'7" girl bellowing and beating the f*ck out of my mom's car (put a dent in it by the tire well ffs, but at least my toe isn't broken and my mom's discs in her back aren't broken/pulled from us getting thrashed, which has happened so often before). I'm in Canada and there's no funding for kids like her. The government won't even give staff 2:1 support, because there ISN'T enough staff for all their houses to begin with. It was a nightmare going through 3 different companies to get her somewhere *better* before she turned 19 (legal adult in canada), and it's still extremely depressing knowing that she can't have a "normal" life like my mom wants her to have.... because unfortunately my sister isn't "just" a kid from a broken home or "only" has autism. Those things you don't need individual, personalized training for. The "you don't have to love them right away" line hit me in the gut and always will, having been passed around from home to home because my sister was "too difficult" even when I was the one taking care of her in those instances. The system is overworked and outdated, and the "child library" really works to show how "depersonalized" caring for these hurt kids has become, including the little "drop-off chute" Paul ends up putting the Care he found into I'm always shocked at how little the adoption/foster care angle is looked at in petscop, because for me, it was extremely clear from the first few signs Paul reads/looks at.

One point I didn't hear mentioned is that, when you're removing petals from the flower, it may be a metaphor for "deflowering" Care. When you see her again after pulling all the petals off, she looks absolutely ruined. Care may have experienced some sort of sexual abuse.

I thought the same too! Especially since the creepy note itself further on seems to allude that Care was emotionally and sexually abused by someone. The " isn't growing eyebrows" ,"excited", thinking of her "in the bathtub" - yikes I wish Paul would've gone down to check on her first before plucking the flower - I have a good hunch that she might have been in State A - and then after all the plucking (the abuse) she went down all the way pass NLM

Wasn't Petscop featured on Night Vision on his channel? He has different types of videos and Night Vision is basically letting people have a taste of the next creepy thing he's found. Night Mind I think is always in allowing people to experience what is out there on their own, especially if it's new. Unlike when he did his huge series on EveryManHYBRID or TribeTwelve, which have been around for years. I am however glad for channels like these who do like to go in depth about these narratives and give explanation. I hope more people discover Nightmare Masterclass and enjoy what his channel is about. Hopefully not seeing him as a Night Mind copy cat.

Where the hell do I begin on this. This video is perfect. Your voice, detailed analysis and constantly inserting footnotes through out is super amazing( I work as a teacher so to see footnotes used often is good). This type of topic invokes so many different emotions ranging from curiosity, mystery to sadness and shame. Its incredibly fascinating looking down the lens to see an old game and just wondering how they managed to piece all these seemingly random elements, puzzle making, world design to create such a mystifying game. What makes it even more interesting is that newer games don't really have that level of complexity (guides for pretty much all games on YT these days). As for the game itself its a whole new world. After seeing this video explaining some of the concepts that the game covers( and the manner in which they are presented to the player), I decided to delve a little deeper and found the subreddit for Petscop. Its really opened my eyes to how engrossing the game has been for so many fans who pour so many hours into analysis of minor details, just in the hope they might gain some understanding of the almost infinite realm of discovery that Petscop seems to be. Its not even as if the game itself is so vast, its the avenues of research the game takes you down that adds to the complexity. The unknown and fascination with it can take the human mind to a myriad of places. Thank you for this and good day!

Alongside the analysis of Evencare as a foster care agency, the theme of transitions also fits in. Every time a child is distupted there is trauma. We are specifically taught a class on how to transition kids from manager from manager, from home to home. Quite often there is a traumatic response to change, because the experience IS traumatic. Marvin's desire to return to childhood, to replicate his very early childhood, is a common response to trauma. To lash out at others and dehumanize them is also common. Transitions are traumatic. The courts are involved in every transition. Of course a seven year old would be traumatized by his friend vanishing. I see it every day. Its simply the difference between seeing others as pets or fellow human beings that seperates Marvin from Paul.

I don't think the "Go Back" button shimmering means anything. If you pay attention, any high color-contrast borders in the game shimmer in the same way. Note that the borders between the path to Even Care and the grass are shimmerirng, the trees in front of even care in front of the pink background, any time the pink walls interact with the blue floor, the border between the collectibles and many different backgrounds, and on and on. It looks like deinterlacing artifacts to me, but it's been a long time since I've had to deinterlace any video. Maybe I'm wrong and every single border that's shimmering actually has some meaning to it, but I think you have to analyze all shimmering borders and not just pick and choose the ones that seem to have obvious meaning.

Coming back to this 5 years after first finding it. I was at Uni at the time and just browsing videos on a break. I came across a your video on Petscop and I was instantly hooked. I loved the intrigue, the mystery and the way they explored serious, dark themes like animal and child abuse. The old ps1 style audio and visuals were just beautiful. The distortion and nostalgic feel made the videos oddly familiar and unsettling at the same time. Another part of why I loved Petscop so much was that it was happening as I was watching it. It wasn't an ARG that had already concluded, one where you could find out the ending right away. Being active as it was coming out and engaging with a various fan theories, meant I really felt like part of the community. I specifically remember you going through the meaning of the "developers" name Garalina and eventually concluding with the old phrase, "hook, line and sinker". The way you found that out was super cool. When it concluded, I felt a bit sad but it was one of those where you were just happy to be there as it was happening. From time to time, I go back and listen to the music they released because it makes for great listening. I wish I could be back there, discovering Petscop for the first time again. I'm watching the whole series again for the third time and it's still crammed with interesting ideas and details I hadn't remembered from the last two watches. Incredible work 👍

I think the shed scene is something else other than "deflowering". Sad Care with her eyes covered is referred to as "NLM," which stands for "Nobody Loves Me". This shed scene depicts the picking off of the petals, and, if you're familiar with the "loves me, loves me not" game, the petals eventually land on "Loves Me Not." It's also important to note that this specific kind of flower in the scene is the most common kind used for "loves me, loves me not." It could be that Care was verbally or physically abused and not sexually abused, as this is the only point in the game when sexual abuse would be referenced; other places and items refer specifically to physical harm and abuse.

Anyone ever consider that the "you dont konw how to open doors" would only suit a baby or small child, or animal? because every actual human can open doors?
@sludgegulley6 жыл бұрын
iunary not every human lmfao, why do you think we have automatic doors? And the door thing comes into play later in the series symbolically, ie a common way of hiding abuse (to the point of it becoming a trope in media) is the good ol “I fell into the door” excuse.

Has anyone considered 'Petscop' being a portmanteau of 'pets' and 'cop', cop being used as a verb in the context of to take something? As in, copping a pet?
@cicada3006 жыл бұрын
'copping' would be a pretty bad term to use for something that's meant to be analyzed as it's not only slang, but rarely used and fairly new slang. You want to use terms that are in common vernacular, or at least ones that can be linked (such as latin)
@andeggbreaks6 жыл бұрын
@@cicada300 it's more widely known than scop, though. If I'm honest I'm not sure the name has any significance at all, but copping in reference to the name petscop was my first thought.

As in, to steal or take something? Which would mean, to steal a pet in this context?
@CJCodesButItsGamesInstead Жыл бұрын
Something else important to note is that the note says "I turned the right and became a shadow monster man." While Paul does this later in the series, he's also analogically by pressing "down, down, down, [...] right, start." Like the going down of steps, then turning to the right. This unlocks the lower part of the game, the shadowy, monstrous part. Paul is transforming the game into a Shadow Monster Man.

I think one of the things I like most, and that really help to sell it as authentic is that Paul doesn’t have the answers for the bulk of what he comes across. And he seemingly misses out on certain hints the game gives. It just makes it feel more real.

I never really see it when people talk about the sexual assault narrative, but care nlm could also be because of the assault. Victims of csa often don't understand what happened to them, but they know it makes them feel gross, leading to the conclusion that they're forever unclean and unlovable, hence 'nobody loves me'. also the rebirthing of the friend in care, I don't think it's literal, but Marvin using care as a replacement for her

16:39 The c in Care's is quivering a bit, signifying that this character is a warning or some pet to collect (which is the case) but since this is the only time apart from the triangle in the file namer is the text quivering when the text itself is in a sentence relating to pets, but looking into the game the message is very clear, the person who made this game is a person that was involved in the death of Candice Newmaker, this may not be shocking from face value but this game maybe a memorial for these people that went on a trip at a windmill, here is the theory. Before the Candice Newmaker incident, Candice went with her friends, their names are Paul, Care, Micheal, and Marvin. These people went to a windmill, and they suddenly vanished. A few years later, before the 'rebirthing' process Candice undertook, a person involve in the death of Candice chatted with Newmaker. He/she got this information: Micheal was bullied by Marvin when Marvin got his PS1, since the parents didn't notice, the bullying got so bad that the month before the windmill, Micheal got beaten up so bad that he went to the hospital for even seeing the PS1 in the same room as Marvin was in. Micheal fully healed when he was invited on the windmill trip, Paul always got arm injuries, and Care was bullied at a school that these kids went to, and her parents didn't knew that their daughter was getting bullied. After the rebirthing process and the charges were made, the person who was on patrol created the game Petscop, serving as a cover up to get the public's support on this matter, creating a fake company, fake copyright date and sold on the ps1 to sell to people that the incident was fake, making strong hints to the Candice Newmaker incident, and making it a child's game to get more people to buy. Since most publisher said it was too dark for a child's game, the person created a quick, child - friendly, unfinished level to cover it up. Since that wasn't enough to publish, because the testers could easily find the Newmaker Plane, he sold into a random family coming with a note that came with the game that included a weird paragraph, a date and a instruction on how to get into the Newmaker Plane, which is the family of the letsplay guy who is recording this game. Well that all, but I think tht was all in vain, because it will get lost in the comments.
