The Phantom of the Opera Book vs Movies

This book is more of a horror story than the romance Andrew Lloyd Weber turned it into. Having said that, the musical is surprisingly close to the book! The Lon Chaney version stays true to the horror side of the story, but that movie has its own differences in regards to speeding up the story.

Carlotta does "croak" in the 1925 movie... "Co-Ack!" Co-Ack!" title represents croaking. Good job overall. I've followed the Phantom story/book/movies since the '60s. Interesting tale!

Time permitting, try the phantom of the opera TV series that was done in 1990 with Charles Dance and Teri Polo. Much of the story is there but different parts are fleshed out; no Persian but Erik's father is.

Yeah, I thought that the novel was based on a true story to when I first read it. And then I learned that it was just a style of writing, similar to the “true story” behind passing down the lost story of The Princess Bride.

Oof I will not touch the Schumacher version with a 50 foot pole as it is torture. I do feel bad mainly for Schumacher as he was talented with the right projects, Patrick Wilson who can sing well, Emmy being young and in her first major leading part & Minnie Driver who is so funny in the movie. The musical is of course a classic for a reason and the book really should be read by more. Course if you want a close enough version the 1925 film is easily the way to go

Poor Christine. Caught between two men who are terrible. Both of them look at her as an object and she has to constantly reassure them in different ways while one is verbally abusing her (Raoul) and the other is mentally and physically abusive (Erik). I've never seen either movie, but it sounds like the writers worked hard to make Raoul likeable.

Have you seen the 25th anniversary Phantom of the Opera at Royal Albert Hall? You can get it on DVD or Blu-ray, and you basically get everything Phantom has to offer without Gerard Butler. Ramin Karimloo is so much better cast, and not only do you have his much better, his much more fitting singing voice as Phantom but they do not hold back on making his deformity as ugly as the role calls for. In fact, everyone is much better cast in that production than they were in the movie.

@@WhytheBookWins If anyone tells me they haven’t seen Phantom, I show them that first. I wish I had seen the show onstage before seeing the movie - it would have made a big difference.
