A full unabridged audiobook of the classic horror story, "The Phantom Rickshaw", by Rudyard Kipling - complete with sounds and visuals.
After an affair with a Mrs. Agnes Keith-Wessington in Simla, the narrator, Jack, repudiates her and eventually becomes engaged to Miss Kitty Mannering. Yet Mrs. Wessington continually reappears in Jack's life, begging him to reconsider, insisting that it was all just a mistake. But Jack wants nothing to do with her and continues to spurn her. Eventually Mrs. Wessington dies, much to Jack's relief. However, some time thereafter he sees her old rickshaw and assumes that someone has bought it. Then, to his astonishment, the rickshaw and the men pulling it pass through a horse, revealing themselves to be phantoms, bearing the departed ghost of Mrs. Wessington.
This story was first published in Quartette, the Christmas Annual of the Civil and Military Gazette for 1885, which included four stories by the nineteen-year-old Kipling with other items of prose and verse by his parents and sister. It was revised before being collected in The Phantom Rickshaw and Other Tales, Volume 5 of the Indian Railway Library, of 1890.
Read by Elliot Fitzpatrick.

This story was new to me. Kipling is so good at creating a world and immersing us in it. A good, creepy story.

Dark, sad and emotionally intense. Kipling wrote a number of short stories about the tragic/destructive relations between men and women that could develop in the restricted society of colonial India, but this one is new to me. Thank you for uploading it (and beautifully read, as always).

Always love your audiobooks. May I ask what’s your process for picking the books you read and if you have any sort of uploading schedule?

I try to keep it eclectic! I know there are channels out there that focus on a specific genre (detective fiction/horror etc.) but I love to explore different themes to keep it exciting. At the moment I’m uploading when I’m able as I’m still a commercial audiobook narrator for Audible too, but I’m hoping this year to commit more time to the channel and create more of a schedule!

4:27 what is "a sick man's command of language"?
@classicaudiobookswithelliot
@classicaudiobookswithelliot 4 ай бұрын
I took it to mean that his sickness was all-consuming and was driving his thoughts and speech incessantly. Hence why our narrator advises him to write his story down as a form of self-therapy

@@classicaudiobookswithelliot that makes sense. And here I was wondering if it meant he had some heightened level of eloquence or something🤣

You may well be right! Perhaps his focus on his illness is resulting in a greater grasp of language
