I remember watching this in elementary school because some how my teacher brought up the book and I said "Oh! My dad has the movie at home! Can I bring it in and we can watch it? It's gonna be FRIDAY!" Note: Watching movies on Fridays wasn't even a thing with that teacher, but I guess the way I said it she just went for it. So the next day I came in with the VHS and we watched it!

That's sad that the movie seems so bad. This book is one of my favorites of all time. I reread it every year. The characterization of Milo being so bored all the time makes much more sense to me there, and the wordplay I still find wonderful. It was like a mix of a one of those greek epics where the main characters go on random adventures, mixed with aesops fables for all these morals, and Dr Seuss with all the wordplay throughout. It's really short and I recommend reading it (maybe it'll turn out my nostalgia is just what makes me like it)
@governor_explosion5 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Devlin I liked the book a lot, too. It’s been years since I read it, The Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Wonderland, but I remember the plots of all of them really meander a lot before the actual plot kicks in. Which makes them interesting to look at as films, especially if you do really experimental things with it, but not the best plot-wise for an adaptation. I do miss 60’s animation. I love animation from all eras, but I like when animation gets to be really weird and colorful and do things live action cannot.
@CorndogNinja5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I remember really enjoying the book as a kid (and not liking the movie much). Although even a better movie would struggle to capture all the wordplay in the narrative and dialogue.

If you like Death of Stalin and Veep, Armando Iannucci brain children, you'll probably like The Thick of It, In The Loop, and all things Alan Partridge. It's all gold, The Thick of It is basically just a British version of Veep, well, seeing as it came first that makes Veep an American version of The Thick of It. In the Loop is essentially just a movie version of The Thick of It.

I feel like I'm one of the few that still thinks A Beautiful Mind did deserve Best Picture. Ron Howard's direction is so warm and engaging. I still think A Beautiful Mind still looks better than the also amazing Amelie and Mulholland Drive. Russell Crowe pulls off a fantastic difficult performance that could have felt like a parody, but instead is a huge change of character for him. Jennifer Connelly is devastating. Ed Harris is amazing for a number of reasons. James Horner's score is one of the best ever. His music changes the point of the Car Chase sequence just with his score.

I loved this book so much as a kid, it's a bit like Alice in Wonderland but in the daydreams of a kid thinking about his school lessons. The movie needed the whimsy of Disney's Alice in Wonderland, with compelling visuals and characters, to make it a success. I think the animation style was too straight forward, too direct.

Aw, The Phantom Tollbooth was one of my favorite books as a kid! It's a pity that the movie failed to capture the mindbending experience of the book, as it's filled with wordplay, puns, and tongue-twisters amidst a fantastical (and confusing) world... all of which somehow missed the mark in the animated version. I can understand why the author disliked it! I still do recommend the book, especially for reading to kids.
