One thing I’d love to see changed is the opening cinematic. We got some great ones that really set the scene in TW:3k, Attila, and even Troy. The Pharoah one is just a dung beetle and watching grandpa pharoah choke on a grape.

Man, you are absolutely RIGHT I completely forgot about this! Now you got me started. The cringe-inducing humor, the choking on the grape, the servant rolling his eyes. They play it off like Merneptah is a joke, and then they try to switch the tone to a "badass" one with all the fighting? The tone is completely off and it just falls flat. I feel nothing from it. It clearly didn't take itself seriously, so why should we? Pharaoh shares a lot of thematic similarities with Attila, so they should have taken that "apocalypse" theme to 11 just like Attila did. Instead, we got grapes and goofy faces. Now compare that to Total War: Attila's opening cinematic. "Ah, Rome. The eternal city. I have seen the end of days, and years from now men will say: 'here began the fall of Rome.' Those who wore the golden wreathe grew sick with every kind of wickedness. They betrayed their friends, and murdered those they loved. They did all this, and called it...just."

@@thunderbagel3886 Yes! The thing with Pharaoh is that it has SOME of that "crumbling of civilization aesthetic" you mentioned. When the civilization collapse meter starts to go down. The color drains from the visuals, and in battles the sky is almost red. It looks sick. But Attila had the cinematics, the writing (objective: survive until 405 A.D.), the visuals, the whole package. I have issues with Attila but it handled it's theming masterfully imo. Like you said, it elevates the game.

They could angle it similar to Attila with all the various cultures on migration amidst various cities already. The cultural variety and potentially even fringe activities like cavalry use, make the game a bit more relatable to the time. Widespread use of certain things may not have happened but regionally accessible items would make this fun as well

Yeah there are a lot of thematic similarities between Pharaoh and Attila. I love the "apocalypse" vibe of both games but Attila still does the "end of the world" vibe better. It would be cool if they made the Arameans and the Libu able to form hordes and settle down like in Attila! Migration, like you said.

@@happycompy if they had horde civilizations that have unique and specific units or traits that they have alone, as well as a higher functioning UI like more WH3 style so they are fast, more aggressive, quick to respond to player management, that would make the collapse seem devastating. That would draw the line between the city dwellers and those coming to change history. Of course history is still foggy at that time, but that allows a bit of leash to add in the mythos of the time

About the assyrian units starting as "small well trained groups", I think it just means that since their units are expensive you'll probably have to keep few units in your army at the start.

The Assyrian empire that we all know and love is the neo-Assyrian empire that you mentioned. They're the ones people think of if you ask them on the street, even if they don't know the time period. And as for the lack of cavalry, yea that's devastating to both Troy and this game. More cav the better even if it's anachronistic

It feels like they just said "fuck it" and put in the cavalry because they knew people would want the Neo-Assyrian Empire (famous for cavalry) that they think of in their heads when they think "Assyria," just like you said. I agree 100%. In Troy i always make sure to get centaur settlements and get at least Savage Warriors (tier 2 ones) if not Champions (tier 3 ones), because it cannot be overstated how much of an advantage having at least 150-200 horseman in a full stack army, they make it so much more versatile.

the problem with CA is that they have the ingredients they just forgot the recipe. a lot of studios still search for the right ingredients when making a game because they dont have the experience. CA has it but they forgot how to do it thats the truth. they now prefer fantasy epic games with pretty visuals and handheld games. SHogun was a game that could destroy you but it was so fun. medieval is a game that i would never forget,it was my childhood and a history student back then it was so delicous. i miss medieval

Yeah I'm okay with how they seem to be handling its implementation. Cavalry will be fun to use (there's a mod that adds in some already). Though it kind of flies in the face of their argument against adding the Amazons due to "historical inaccuracy" lmao. Like you already added in Neo-Assyrian heavy cavalry, and all of the characters from Homer's Illiad, but Amazons are too much? Even Rome 2 had them.

Wake me up when they add myth units. I just can't into a campaign map where the most engaging thing happening is seeing numbers go up. Give myth units that are accessible through the tech trees/court mechanics/map exploration/etc. They will also shake up the battle gameplay a little bit, it's just too stale and the engine can't handle them on top of that.

@@happycompy the lulubians, though I don’t know the difference to the gutians and hadn’t really even thought of them as seperate, were a group of mountain tribes in the zagros mountains who invaded elam and mesopotamia from time to time and were busy in mannea, I suppose the scythians, cimmerians or assyrians finally dealt with them at some point, because they didn’t bother the median or persian empire, which was partly in the mountains.

hes not wrong and of course player count shows that most of the people didnt want this setting. personally i like the setting although its the first historical TW that i didnt bougth or played. you can search steam charts and see that even a game so old like medivel total war still has more players than most of their titles to this day. why they dont make a sequel is beyond me but i already gave up on tw long time ago. i keep with the news and averything else but i dont expect anything good from CA anymore. ive been playing paradox games,manor lords and age of empires to keep my strategy itch satisfied.
