The two solis from Alan Baylock's "Torque", an incredible funky song with some killer solis in every section.
The recording used here is from the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra, mostly with Airmen of Note members.
• "Torque" Alan Baylock ...
Another great recording off the album "Prime Time"

I used to think that jazz musicians didn't know how to read music like symphonic musicians do. Today, after seeing this solo, I see that they know much more than symphonic musicians, that is, they play symphonic music, but symphonic musicians cannot play jazz.
@gavinloeper9321
@gavinloeper9321 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say symphonic musicians *cant* play jazz, but there’s definitely a lot of stylistic rules that go with each sub-genre of jazz that you would have to learn if you want to sound like a professional. Meanwhile, the vast majority of people at least start out in a more symphonic setting and have some experience with it. As for the jazz musicians not knowing how to read music, not exactly sure where you got that from. We read music, but sometimes charts just consist of a single lead sheet with the melody and the chords. That’s usually for smaller groups like quintets, not big bands like in this vid.

The song is "Torque" by Alan Baylock. The full thing is available for purchase somewhere for around $80, not super hard to find. This video was more just to show off the song and what the parts are like.
