"Everything Everywhere All At Once" is a unique story about multiple universes while also delving into deep contemplations about life. Although the film may appear dense and complex, it conveys its entire message through two symbols: the pretzel and the googly eye. Pretzels, with a black exterior and a white center, and googly eyes, with a white exterior and a black center, sporadically appear throughout the film in unexpected places. So, what could be the meaning behind these persistently shown symbols?
As the film takes place in multiple universes, comprehending the story is not easy. Let's start with the universe where our main story unfolds. In this story, our protagonist is Evelyn, who leads a chaotic life within an immigrant family residing in America. Evelyn's life is actually as messy and distracting as the cluttered work desk we see at the beginning of the film. She is introduced to us as a wife facing divorce, a mother struggling with communication issues with her teenage daughter, a child grappling with her father's conservatism, and a business owner trapped in tax debts. Even in the main universe, Evelyn's life is incredibly complicated. We observe that she feels stuck in this life, unable to keep up with everything, and she struggles with regret. She is visibly overwhelmed, almost wrestling with life. This is the first story we witness in the film, seen through Evelyn's perspective.
