The color pie IS Richard Garfield's underrated masterpiece. As someone who also regards it as highly as you do, I must say this is probably the best color pie video on youtube. Literally the best. I've seen them all. No other channel is as well-written, extensive and this analytical. In particular, I commend how you've framed the colors as ambiguously as you could, and how you weren't afraid to challenge what have become color pie tropes or stereotypes. For example, other channels will discuss color pairings with how they are expressed in Ravncia (I guess because Ravnica is SO popular). They fall into this Ravnica trap and limit their analyses. But as you've highlighted, even the same colors can manifest in vastly different ways. Well done, sir.

I guess the only thing you kinda missed was Colorless. I saw a reddit post a while back attempting to discuss what it means to be devoid of any color. What I found particularly interesting was how the reddit post argued that generic mana and Colorless mana are NOT the same. It's easy to explain how artifacts are inanimate objects and are therefore devoid of color. But with things like Waste lands and the Eldrazi, it becomes a little more interesting. [[Kozilek, the Great Distortion]] in particular requires 8 generic mana and 2 colorless mana. What the fuck is up with that???

I adore what you did here. I was hoping for having a less nerdy and more general take on the color pie. And you even talked about more than three colors. That's awesome! Thank you for that. And the depth and nuance you gave each color was almost sublime to me. You have there as well my gratitude. But you killed it when bringing the pie to real life. I thought this was just a stupid idea of mine but now I am encouraged to do it myself. (Just tried Dwarfes in D&D very hard but philosphically I concluded Selesnija with maybe one more color) This video was long but great and deep. I am on my knees.

The Black side because they are Tribalistic towards Goblins and Orcs and because I see them not appreciating the malleableness of Izzet. They are often considered Red just because mountains which I fidn reductionist. But I have an idea for a DnD world steeped in the color pie. There Dwarves could be Bant (you might have convinced me) and trying to expamd their ideals to "Red" mountains, making sure they do not end up being "corrupted" by Red Mana. This could be an interesting take: infected or indoctrinated by a philosophy they did not choose or agree with.

My favorite thing about the color pie is you can use it in other games, specifically role playing games to break down character motivations and world beliefs. Are they zealatos and passionate? Red white. Are they conniving and play people using information? Black blue I find it easier to use than the alignment charts in dnd for example Edit: my second favorite legendary elemental, Horde of Notions I find cool because elementals on that plane manifest from emotions and ideas. Horde of Notions could represent the full scope of emotions, or the idea of being so overwhelmed by every thought in your mind at once

@ItsNotGoodShow
@ItsNotGoodShow Жыл бұрын
My instinct is to say blue, for the desire to categorize Philosophies in defined sectors. But, because it is using far more flexible and subjective definitions to paint broad strokes over the capacities of the colors (sometimes resulting in contradiction) i am led to say blue-red. Only red would allow taxonomic groups to contradict themselves and still find consistency within those contradictions enough to have easily recognized philosophy. Think "vibes-based" categorization. And post hoc justification for those groupings. When they are explained to you, They make sense, but if you dig into them more, you might find stuff that is harder to justify.

Captain America - Mono White, but gains Red over time. Doctor Strange - Blue-White-Green Black Panther - Starts off White Black(civil war), then turns White-Red Hawkeye - starts White, gains red and black as ronin. Starlord - Red. That's it. Note that when I say "within" a certain color range, I mean It could include all or less of those colors Deltarune: Susie's aggression, disregard for rules, and protectiveness of her friends makes her very clearly red Ralsei can be safely put within the bant colors, since he is clearly acting for what he percieves as the greater good and doesn't even know what is means to be Ralsei (something he says himself in the second chapter) Noelle is a loyal to a fault healer, dominant color is white. May Also be black in the snowgrave route due being persauded to gain power at any cost Since Kris's motivations are intentionally left vague and the ludo-narrative implies he isn't fully in control during most of the chapters gameplay, I wasn't able to figure out a mana-alignment for him Berdly is blue/red+, since he is a nerd/gamer who tries to act self-confident to cope with expectations of good grades, and drops his smug act when he sees Noelle is being Manipulated in the snow-grave route Spamton: Being a salesman who effectively took a Faustian-esque bargain in his Desire for wealth, power and fame makes his dominant color black Now Spy X Family: Loid "Twilight" Forger is a spy who uses disguise and manipulation to complete his mission but is ultimately loyal to his country, comfortably falling within the Esper colors While her powers are blue, Anya's personality seems to mainly be red, driven by chaos and what her heart desires, both good and evil, at least in season one, though she isn't lacking in genuine curiosity either Yor's seemingly contradictory status of pretending to be a normal woman, and maternal figure and using refined elegance to infiltrate and assassinate others is probably within Mardu The word I'd like you to analyze is...Stoicism. My bet is on UW, since it is both reflective and orderly.
@ItsNotGoodShow
@ItsNotGoodShow 2 жыл бұрын
Those are some NICE observations, i love it. Well done on every account. Soticism is definitely blue white, but far more white than blue. Stoicism can actually hinder ones ability to follow blue philosophy by blinding its adherents to expansive or exploratory goals. It centers around a perception of oneself put out into the world, which is blue in nature, but the tennets and ideals of stoicism render much of the rest of its color association completely white. That is the greater cultural impact of stoicism. If you reduce it down to just its definition, stoicism mono white. But if you examine why one would just to supress themself this way, you can explore it as a white black, or even white green philosophy.

I feel like I have the five color empathy but if I had to choose what colors I started off with, it would be Jeskai. Where I am currently, it would be Grixis. I think everyone has the capability of reaching five color empathy and understanding where another person came from without judgement but we stick to certain philosophies as to not confuse other people and ourselves. I always dreamed of an ultimate philosophy that would care for everyone and we will unite under the said philosophy but I shifted to black thinking that I can only care about myself and people live by their own rules so why force my will on theirs? Definitely an amount of work that deserves more views! As for your request, could you analyze for me: "Madness"
@ItsNotGoodShow
@ItsNotGoodShow 3 жыл бұрын
Madness as a concept is actually explored fairly thoroughly in the game of magic itself. Generally, inducing madness is a red power. But, seeing as how madness is a very broad idea, im going to break this into two major ideas. 1.Temporary/Situational Madness - This is a pure mono red thing. It is an emotional and cognitive state induced by extreme Situations. Whether that be stress, or chemical induction, losing control is red through and through. 2. Mental Illness - this is not necessarily something that can be broken down by color, i think i could be digressive to see mental illness that way. Every character on the color pie can experience mental illness, much like all humans. In that way, mental illness is 5 color. It is not based in the philosophies of the colors, and the shared experience of having mental illness can be something that allows people of different philosophies to relate to one another. Hope that answers your request!

Very interesting, because I would've classified him as red+black, as his independence, ambition for power and self-improvement are to me his most prevalent features. This however led me to thinking, that I don't know a single Good-aligned redblack character, since he's still part of the Heroes and that these would probably be exclusive to each other. In MtG terms I think he would be closest to Sarkhan, so I would've called him either Rakdos, Mardu or Grixis
@ItsNotGoodShow
@ItsNotGoodShow 3 жыл бұрын
@@mishatpr3306 Actually, I think you are right. He is more Red Black. All the things I attributed to blue fit far better for Black for Bakugo. There are very few Red Black good guys, howerever there are some who aren't just evil. For example, Olivia Voldaren isn't an outright evil figure. From our moral standpoint, as humans, we see her as evil for feeding on humans, but she does ally with the "good guys" in the Shadows block storyline. I see Olivia as more self concerned or selfish than evil. So, as long as we consider Sorin "on the good guy side" Olivia fits that same neutral-ish role. Also Neheb, before he got eternalized was red black for very similar reasons to Bakugo, for his ambition and ferocity, but he was never bad or evil. Lots of neutral, but no GOOD GUY red black characters it seems, lol.

Great Video! What are the color identities of the Hell Angels? What about M.I.T.?
@ItsNotGoodShow
@ItsNotGoodShow 4 жыл бұрын
Okay, this is gonna be a long one. But I got this. So, for hells angels i will say White, Black, and Red. This is because they have a strong loyalty to their own group at the expense of those outside of it. Additionally they find laws to be optional, preferring their own set of morals and codes. While I know the hells angels aren't a monolith of beliefs and attitudes, as an aggregate, they exhibit the white black philosophy of tribalism. (Additionally, some chapters are known to be pretty racist, though racism isn't and attribute present throughout the organization) the red is in their freedom loving, police hating spirit detaching themselves from the state, and its apparatus. As for MIT, honestly, mono blue. A technological Institute for learning is as mono blue as you can get. Not only is it ABOUT the advancement of tech, but ALSO learning and self improvement? Hell yeah, mono blue.

Thanks for being another source of my blue-like search for better understanding of MTG! Funny enough, I’ve always found myself a white-like person with shades of green red and blue. @@ItsNotGoodShow I see! I just thought that because it’s been months on end, you’d have been busy with other stuff ya know? Yeah, I sadly have to use a phone app until my laptop finally comes home from repairs, so that’s a lot of retyping from phone to pc, as well as entirely copying down manually. Fortunately I’ve always been more of a keyboard typer than a phone typer, so it should be easier for me! Ahh, that makes sense then. I can see those colors in you. In terms of my set so far? I’ve made a 20 card set called “Tales of Mesoran”, which is based around this fictional empire based roughly on various middle eastern empires like Persia, Mesopotamia, Iran, Sassanids, Babylonians, and so on. It features unique land cards which bring out the full potential of your creature list, a few standalone cards (one equipment and one sorcery), three different creatures that can be used on their lonesome, and other creatures meant to work in sequence with the former. It’s a very white and blue set with traces of red, and is meant to represent a vast and diverse empire working together for the greater good. There are two legendary creatures as well. But I’ve rambled long enough so point is, thanks for responding! ^_^

Can't believe you're still going strong on your promise to respond to every comment. Thats bonkers, and I love it. I found this video when trying to figure out what colour mana to use in my deck for the Covenant from the Halo series. I know it's overdone, but I wanted to do it myself. After this video I've landed on Blue White. Blue is their seeking of knowledge of Forerunner artifacts, as well as their assimilation of any other alien technologies, and White is both their pursuit of the Great Journey, a holy crusade to purge any species unwilling to join them, as well as their sacrificial use of troops in achieving enlightenment. I'm also going to make the Flood, likely mono-black because they're just zombies, but for the UNSC I'm not quite sure. Likely Red White, but mostly red.

Really good analysis there. I totally agree with you on UNSC and the Covenant, though i dont think i agree with you about the flood. Yes, the flood reanimate corpses, but they are essentially a plant/fungus/parasite with a hivemind. Such elements are natural to their species. They are driven by instinct. To me, that makes them green. You could argue that their ability to use anything at their disposal to meet their goals is a black trait. So i would say they are more green black, than mono black.

@@ItsNotGoodShow A good point, that had even crossed my mind before, but I forgot when I wrote the comment. I think I might leave it as mono black, but let it synergize well with green spells. A return (history) to the natural order where all are equal.

I have created fanmade MTG cards of Master Eon, Hektore, Count Moneybone, Captain Frightbeard, Pandergast and Dream Sheep from Skylanders series. Here are some characters that I think represent each color and some combinations: King from Fallen Kingdom = White Megamind = Blue Young Onceler from The Lorax = Black Jevil from Deltarune = Red Tree Beard from LOTR = Green Tasque Manager = White/Blue Spamton = Black/Red Shrek = Green/Red Tamatoa from Moana = Black/Blue Ice Age Baby = colorless

I have a magic system of my own that is highly influenced by the color pie. I call it the 7 arcana. Each arcana is named after an astrological planet. They are the following. 1. Sol (Sun): Magic of Light. Think about white but more focused on support instead of control. 2. Luna (Moon): Magic to do with Spirits. Consider it to be the metaphysical side to green or the spiritual side of blue. 3. Mars: Battle Magic. Basically red. 4. Mercury: Magic of the Mind. Very very blue. 5. Jupiter: Magic of the assertion of the will. Think of it as either Izzet or Azorious. 6. Venus: Nature Magic. Green, just green. 7: Saturn: Necromancy. Obviously black.

For example: - Pyromancy is associated with the stomach, so the food you eat affects your magic - Hydromancy, Cryomancy, and Hemomancy are all associated with the kidneys - Telemancy is associated with the eyes and often causes its users to go blind, so most portal mages are blind and can only teleport you to the places they remember before going blind. Okay, so! Desepticons and autobots of transformers franchise, what's their color?
@ItsNotGoodShow
@ItsNotGoodShow 3 жыл бұрын
This is interesting. Since both the autobots and Decepticons vary individually, especially from media to media (comics, movies, tv shows) ill try to condense it down to the basics of their group philosophies. Autobots seem blue white at first as they are elements of "law" and protection. They use advanced technology in order to accomplish these goals. But often they are like vigilantes, working outside the law, which would make them white red. But the technology aspect really cannot be abandoned so jeskai (red white and blue) makes sense as well. They are selfless in their help to humanity. However, the Decepticons are a little different, you absolutely can keep the blue aspect of them, but you add black. The Decepticons, depending on the source material, are not so benevolent and see the humans as pests. They work in ways that would see their place ABOVE humans as natural. I believe you could argue their appeals to a greater natural order could make them green. Of course, far more than the autobots, Decepticons vary from source material to source material, so my perspection of sultai (green blue black) might not fit exactly how you see them.

I'd like to know what you think about the relationship between the philosophy of the colors and the playstyles and what I mean is how does someone's philosophy on life affect how they choose to express themselves in a medium like a card game. Personally my favorite colors in game are dimir with support of white and red so also Grixis and Esper so lots of combos and cheating things out with the aid of whites structure or reds bursts of energy. But in life I would say I have a more white green blue outlook of improvement of the community with the use of order and knowledge with funny enough the exclusion of self interest as I don't really see the need in valuing or judging the people around me in which I don't think I'm better than anyone and that I don't aspire to be either. We are all just trying to live with the situations that we were giving and it would be great if we could all help each other with the collective knowledge and improvements that we have done as a species. I just find this interesting as it uses the colors I rate at 2 (Blue), 4 (White), and 5 (Green). While excluding my favorite color Black and my third Red. I wonder if it's a thing of the desire for power and ambition that I don't express in my real life I express in a medium that's just for fun or it's just a matter I prefer the aesthetics of it and don't enjoy the aesthetics of my ideal philosophy. Just something to think about
@ItsNotGoodShow
@ItsNotGoodShow 2 жыл бұрын
I think you answered your own question partially. It's really common in escapist mediums for people to express and entertain themselves with ideas and characters that they dont subscribe to in the real world. My favorite color combo in mtg is bw, often with red, and if you remember what i said about those color combos, i absolutely do not vibe with that at all. I see myself more of a wur or jeskai person in real life. 🤔 in video games, its incredibly common for people to enjoy violent games where the whole plan is to mass murder, but that doesnt reflect what people actually want. And that doesnt mean that everyone who enjoys fictional interactive mediums wants to experience things opposite to their ideals. I think that the harmless/safe nature of these games allows people to express something more to themselves without harm coming from the negative aspects. Like, what if you wanted to act like a Tyrant and control and destroy at a whim, but you didnt want to actually hurt anyone or take away their agency, well, rpgs and video games allow us to experience and explore ideas without their harmful aspects.

Could see blue-red since there is a certain level of experimentation he does in social situations but think black-red fits better since that sense of individuality is important to him Chie: strong honor code and all about protecting the innocent. Also is super short-tempered so she is an easy red-white Yukiko: strong sense of duty to her inn but kinda resistant to making huge leaps from her comfort zone. Makes progress but I would say she is probably green-white Kanji: another white-red person due to that strong code combined with a sense of acting from his gut. Kinda insecure and impulsive so could see green-red but feel like he is a super upstanding guy so I think red-white Rise: is an idol with a problem where she can lose who her real self is so I think blue-red for sure. Naoto: logical and calculating detective but still kinda childish. Is so thorough with thinking everything through though so I think blue-white Teddie: easy Red-Green. He is a manifestation of repressed human thoughts and emotions which means that he is a super impulsive character by nature.

Didn’t see much with UG or GB as a result philosophy outside of Objectivism (ick...): I was thinking Empiricism for UG as Empiricism is about gaining knowledge through the senses, which is a very nature/reality-oriented approach. I was thinking Scholasticism could be UG, but looks like it’s moreso UW (a structured approach to the logical reasoning of knowledge) which can splash G, R, or B depending on the individual. I was thinking Pragnatism could be GB. Cynicism (the Greek philosophy) is probably RG or maybe RG(W) with a massive focus on the focus of one’s natural instinct, the rejection of artificial rules, and the universality of mankind not due to their achievements, but by the virtue of being a human. Diogenes however seemed to be more of a prankster to show the ridiculousness of society. In a way, similar to Oko, so maybe Diogenes’s version is an antagonistic UG (that appears RB) that tries to free true humanity by showing the absurdity of social rules. I don’t know, just random thoughts. Great video!

They don't seem to be truth seeking, so not Temur(Red-Blue-Green), and Apoliticality means they can't be jeskai(white-blue-red). So i am left with simply Red Blue, but Red WAY more than blue.

G. House MD for House is blue/black? Is Amon from Legend of Korra mono Black? For real world: Joan of Arch? William Wallace? Martin Luther?
@ItsNotGoodShow
@ItsNotGoodShow 3 жыл бұрын
House is definitely blue black. Just like Sherlock (who house is based on). Amon is interesting, he truly believed in his future, but thought he had to lie and murder in order to achieve it. So absolutely black. But i think there is more to it. It might be white for his belief in equality, but black for his methods. Joan of arc as a person is more a symbol for the french. More myth and than truth. Nonetheless, i believe she is a symbol of heroics, which is a red white trait. William wallace is probably mono red, for their fight was about freedom from british rule and the freedom to choose their own destiny. Martin luther has similar philosophy to william wallace. When concerning freedom from types of power structures, though more specifically concerned with criticisms of a system's faults and corruptions. I.e. 95 Theses. This makes him red, but also blue and white. Red for his actions against the power structures, blue for the construction of practical criticisms, and white for his adherence to the doctrine.

Love this so much! I would suggest Conservatism is more a form of Naya, the other side of the conversation in the Leonin split during the Shards of Alara block. The sense of preservation of tradition and heritage is strong, but it's also built on a sense of belief in a faith or community that wants to uphold the values (morals) it decides to uphold/preserve, which I feel would bring in some White. That community then grants certain freedoms defined by the community, forming a kind of Red that is tempered into considering history and community over full impulsivity. Though, sometimes the community pushes some kinds of impulsivity, so it depends on what morals the community decides to hold as valuable Thus, I would propose Conservatism is a kind of Naya built predominantly on Green with some White and a splash of Red. Beyond that, this is a great video! I'm working on some worldbuilding for a story of mine, and I especially enjoyed the 4-color discussion. My plan is for certain groups in the story to eventually (over centuries of revisiting this world) reach a peak form showing what they stand against, making them essentially 4-color "tribes." I'm definitely appreciative of a starting point like this video for my thoughts.

Great video! My favorite aspect of mtg is color philosophy. My only gripe with this is labeling Conservativism as straight Green; your line of thinking makes sense, but the most important part of Green (in my eyes) is a reverence to nature (both one's own nature and to the "natural world"), which seems to be missing from the myriad "conservatives" whom I know. I think better examples of Green would be Daoism and the various types of Animism. Also, just gotta say, I think the (A) has a little green in it, too; I personally think Green sees a society where each person plays a part according to their own nature, and also I don't know any other political ideation that concerns itself with protecting natural spaces to the extent that (A) does. Thanks for making this, I will definitely be diving further into your channel. Cheers!

Well, you gotta remember, green is represented by one single ideology or philosophy and philosophies we could call green do not 100% adhere to all of green's possible traits. Daoism may be green, but even when it conflicts with conservativism, that doesnt make conservativism NOT green. Know what i mean? Communism definitely has white in it, but you could argue that so does a dictatorship. Which is fine. Like i said. And not all forms of conservatism are anti nature. Depending on what part of the world you're from, conserving nature and "natural order" can be huge parts of it. Maybe not in capitalist America's version of it, but Nazism had a huge environmentalist part to their ideology. Make sense?

One of the vulnerabilities of the color pie is its presumption of sincerity and consistency. The notion that, if someone is Red, they embody a Red worldview consistently in all things. Even Magic's (frankly derpy) story wouldn't proclaim something like that. To say that Chandra and Nicol Bolas both took the same ideas in regards to their interpretation of Red is about as silly as suggesting that Barack Obama is an exemplar of economic restraint. "Control" is also an idea that has a lot of this problem. Sure, control is a big deal for totalitarian regimes. Exerting control over others is how they stay in power. Control can _also_ be a big deal for someone like a religious monk. While such a person might live by a stringent moral code, perhaps more extreme than any totalitarian regime, they may not necessarily consider others to be necessary, prudent, or even _possible_ to control at all. Both would be Blue, but they're not even _close_ to the same because of the scope with which they apply their philosophy. Self-control doesn't make you fascist, just like Black doesn't make you a sociopath. As far as sincerity goes, an environmentalist celebrity might present themselves as Green outwardly, but that "environmentalism" might just be in the form of supporting tax increases and government regulations on _other people_ while jetting around the world and causing more pollution than a small town. Green is just a façade of self-righteousness, while they're really just a hedonistic Rakdos in private. Should they be considered Green at all? Does being a hypocrite disqualify you from the color? An example of this problem from the lore that _always_ bugged me is Orzhov. It's so simplistic, ignorant, and frankly uncreative to think that a melding of White and Black is "evil church". If White brought the "church" part for fairly obvious reasons, what did Black bring but the "evil" part? You'd think a proper merger of White and Black would focus more on the clash of an individual's relationship with their community. What obligations would one have to their community would have to be fairly balanced with the obligations a community had to an individual (or what we'd call "the balance of freedoms" in real-world political parlance; in short, my right to live beats your right to kill me). If anything, Orzhov would be some form of government, likely a republican Senate, or possibly legal council (the defense attorney to Azorius' prosecutors, if you will). They might be the ones using democratic means to define the very laws that Azorius maintains. Orzhov, as it currently exists in the lore, may have its rules and impositions, but it has no God or any consistent locus of belief at all, or at least not one it takes seriously. It _certainly_ doesn't hold itself to the same standards as the people it oppresses. Orzhov takes from others, and gives nothing back. It is an exemplar of the taxation mechanic of White. (Which I always felt was more of a Black gimmick. Taxation is theft and fuels nothing but the bellies of the powerful elite while giving nothing back but foreign wars to distract all the increasingly impoverished plebs from the true source of their misery: their own rogue government. ...What? You glorified communism...) The White element of Orzhov is a lie. At best, they're Black with good publicity. Compare the "Church" of Orzhov to the Cathars of Innistrad: brutal monster hunters literally burning witches at the stake, but they fight for a purpose that they most _definitely_ believe. They've come to the understandable conclusion that the plane isn't big enough for both people and monsters, and they're not about to get comfy on somebody else's dinner plate. They absolutely put human life before monster life (they put themselves before others, in color pie parlance) to the point of taking up arms. They ain't seeking any kind of peace treaty, or even a less formal agreement to coexist, like Azorius or Sylesnia might attempt. There's no negotiation to be had with the literal man-eating monsters, and the monsters of Innistrad have proven time and again that they absolutely deserve this reputation (save for the miraculously-not-an-edgelord Sorin). Sometimes, hostile entities _earn_ their negative reputation. It's not just a matter of bigotry or a refusal to understand the other side. It's an informed analysis of reality, and responding in kind. Now _that's_ what I'd call White/Black. Perhaps even more than Black, White is extremely misunderstood. It's not only one of the weakest colors in nearly every format, but the fact that it seems to philosophically and mechanically mesh with its enemy colors more than its own allies seems to me like something went wrong somewhere. All the virtues of white color bled into Green and Blue, siphoning White of pretty much any form of positive identity and leaving behind only that which is sinister and self-serving. Frankly, if any color is the color of evil in MTG, it's White. In common game mechanics (which is what the color pie is _supposed_ to represent, but more on that later...), it's the color of oppression, keeping the little guy down, letting (read: making) the peasants fight your battles for you, and unilateral destruction for some reason. Too much Swords to Plowshares. Not enough Teferi's Protection. Why is that? Perhaps the entire venture of categorizing philosophies on the MTG color pie is inherently misguided. When you break it down, MTG colors are playstyles first and philosophies second. White, like Green, isn't supposed to be the color that messes with the other player. (Hell, Green does a _lot_ of things it isn't philosophically supposed to do...) It wins by building itself up, not by taking the other side down. Theoretically, you're _supposed_ to take a little bit from one color and a little from another to combine it into something that wins in a way that fits _you_ personally. Staying mono-color is like a self-imposed challenge and exists as more of a "because I can" kind of option, while some level of syncretism is generally the way to go in most cases. The problem is that, while reality is co-op, Magic is zero sum, and you can't _both_ win. There's no real "diplomacy win condition" (unless you apply a _very_ liberal interpretation of Approach of the Second Sun...), which would be fitting for White to have philosophically. Less so mechanically, as it would either be useless and unplayable (like Happily Ever After), or degenerate and unfun (like... well... Second Sun). Instead of _forcing_ White to have to go to other colors to do its fighting, it appears that it was decided for White to have a passive-aggressive mechanical identity. After all, why should White be the only color that can't win alone? Most of White's biggest hitters are some kind of "I SHALL SMITE THE EVIL ONE FOR GREAT JUSTICE!" types, which largely get interpreted as more sinister and underhanded for, among other things, meta reasons. What's more, most of White's biggest defensive plays are restrictions and tax effects that essentially win by rewriting the rules to favor them. This is historically a bit tasteless given how many people died to their own government in recent decades. Therefore, what are you to assume but that the holiest figures are actually only righteous in their own eyes? It makes sense for Avacyn or Sigarda to fight someone like Yawgmoth or Tibalt. Less so good bois like Ajani or Gideon. Warhammer 40k answered this dilemma by basically making _everyone_ evil (and even _then_ it doesn't make much sense...), whereas Magic tries not to call attention to it at all. It's a game. Even in fluff, it's a game. Otherwise, you might cast Tamiyo the Moon Sage and tell her "by the way, heads up from from the future: Nicol Bolas is gonna' try to steal the sparks of every planeswalker in existence, the Wanderer is really the Emperor of Kamigawa and Tezzeret and Jin-Gitaxis are going to turn you into a Phyrexian monster". Sometimes, the MST3K mantra is the way to go. I don't think this treatment of White is about a knee-jerk hatred of organized religion or authority on behalf of the designers (...at least not necessarily; I don't know them...). It's because nobody wants to play a game about a _good_ Church non-violently converting its enemies to its way of thinking and everybody lives happily ever after, cue a hundred generations of peace, prosperity, and diabetes. Enter _corrupt_ churches. Enter _evil_ religions. Enter _fallen_ angels. Enter fanatical destroyers. Enter wrath and tax effects. Basically, enter things that _present_ themselves as holy and righteous, only to destroy their opposition with complete closed-mindedness and assertion of their own moral superiority, even if that superiority is a complete load. Is any of that "White"? By definition yes (as White can literally be whatever Wizards wants it to be; they're printing White _ramp_ for Ugin's sake...), but only with the understanding that those things exist to allow mono-White some pragmatic way to play games on its own, like the other colors. To judge White as a philosophy by the things it needs to win a competitive and fun game on _some_ kind of proactive terms is a bit unfair. More likely, White would "win" by not playing at all.

Woof, that sure was a lot. I agree on many points of what you say, but i just want to respond to something you said early on in this before you went hog wild about white's depictions. Magic accounts for many of the things you say are missteps, not all, but many. Not only did i mention INCREDIBLY EARLY IN THE VIDEO, that characters who fit into a color do not embody ALL of that color's traits, i also stated that even a single slice of a single color can manifest differently in different characters. Also, it is irrelevant what color a character would call THEMSELVES, the colors describe internal philosophy. If a character pretends to be one thing, and is another, their color philosophy would apply to the Deception and whatever the underlying motivation is, not what they pretend to be. And magic clearly shows this with its characters. All these things ive said are also said by the writers and designers of magic too. It is a flexible set of categories and characteristics that characters can apply to parts of, not a rigid set of rules. It is a tool of description not prescription and that is where i feel like you misunderstand the purpose of it entirely. Also, the orzhov are a glorified bank cult. Their church "worships" money, wealth, and the accumulation of debtors as revenue. It uses tons of religious imagery, but the reason they dont have gods (hence the land Godless Shrine) is because the entire thing is up front and outwardly a death cult of money worshippers. The black isnt "evil" in orzhov, teysa's character arc proves that, rather, its secularism and the accumulation of power. What does a secular church of worship look like? A place to consolidate power and control. Have you played Outer Worlds? Theres a psuedo religion in that game that fits this description pretty handily.

@@ItsNotGoodShow What can I say? I have a penchant for thorough conversation. First off, you're simply wrong about internal versus external mana colors according to canon (barring some huge plotholes that I don't know about). In Kaldheim, Tybalt literally hid the Red in his mana identity when posing as Valki, God of Lies. If you were correct about true inner intent dictating mana colors, either Valki would be Rakdos, or Tibalt would be mono-Black. Plus, there's at _least_ a fan theory that Lazav the Multifarious is impersonating one of the relevant characters in War of the Spark. Even if he's not _actually_ doing it, the implication is that Lazav at least has this ability. So there seems to be multiple points of precedent for partially or completely BSing your mana alignment without necessarily needing some kind of paradigm shift (i.e. Nissa taking on Blue in Amonkhet). Or is there some kind of huge lore-breaking reason why this can't happen? I know War of the Spark's story gets a lot of heat, but Chandra aside (don't respond with an elaboration; trust me, I know _faaaaaar_ more about this situation than I _ever_ purposefully sought out...), I'm not fully read-up as to why. Regardless, I defer to canon... or failing that, the most reasonable fan theory. Lore aside, what might help a lot with the feel of certain spells not matching their color would be if there weren't a number of "wrong-colored" spells or color bleed, which muddy the water. Much discussion has been made of Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile being odd choices for White, are a little too good and were _probably_ a mistake on some level. And yet, they remain an indelible part of White's identity. In fact, if you read some versions of Swords to Plowshares, the flavor text implies that it works by guilting the offending creature into going back home and abandoning its warrior ways. But you're not _really_ casting Swords due to ideologically wishing for a creature to better themselves through a rejection of conflict. This isn't Mobile Suit Gundam here, no matter what Kamigawa Neon Dynasty would have you believe. The only ideology at play is "I don't want to get domed by a big fat dragon, and I'll say whatever will get me out of it". That's not White. That's Blue _posing_ as White, and it's the very kind of color deception I was initially referring to. See also "Run Away Together", which is Blue. By philosophy, it should probably be Red because the theme is of sudden impulse and passion trumping everything. But it's Blue because it bounces, and bouncing is a Blue mechanic. Fair enough, but there's also Nature's Claim, which destroys an Artifact or Enchantment and gives the target's controller 4 life, and all at Instant speed for 1 mana. This has White mechanics written all over it, and yet it's Green purely on aesthetic grounds. Whether the color wheel is an aesthetic breakdown or a mechanic breakdown, either way one of these cards is "wrong". You can have it _either_ way, but you can't have it _both_ ways and still be consistent. Potentially elucidating the issue, White fairly recently got Invoke the Divine in Kaldheim, which does almost _exactly_ the same thing as Nature's Claim, except the caster always gains the life regardless of target and (fatally, in a competitive context) it costs 2 mana more. Much like Swords and Path, is this basically a soft admission that Nature's Claim was too much and, much like Shock Lands are "fixed" True Duals, is Invoke the Divine the "fixed" version of Nature's Claim? How might Wizards' admission that a card is too powerful affect that card's place in (and interpretation of) its color's identity? In practical terms, do we blame Simic for Oko? Or Golgari for Gitrog? Or Blue for Urza (and by extension stax)? Or Red for Dockside Extortionist? Or, like with Swords and Path, should these be considered anomalous? The Professor from Tolarian Community College made a video that asserted that it was incorrect to identify White as the "color of removal" simply because Swords and Path exist, as both were openly acknowledged as mistakes by the designers by direct quote. (Plus, wraths aren't White-exclusive anyway.) What other things do we believe about certain colors are also "mistakes"? Do mechanics play any role in color identity? Should they? Are the cards wrong, or have the colors been mutating over the years? Has power creep gradually undermined what color identities were intended to stand for just so WotC could churn out the next busted chase mythic? Is this "mutation" really just an outgrowth of everything that color was always _supposed_ to be (Thassa's Oracle, Knight of the White Orchid, Blasphemous Act), and the colors are really just getting increasingly "complete"? Are they _supposed_ to overlap? If so, what determines what color gets a given card anyway? These are the kinds of things that come to mind when breaking down the color pie into philosophies. Once these are answered, then we can start saying what philosophy is what color while basing it on some kind of objective standard.

1: what do you think about using color pie to replace Dungeons and Dragons alignment? I think it makes for much more interesting characters and communicates the ideas and concepts for your character more clearly. 2: I wish that green wasn't just the nature color, cause movements and characters that have really cool ideas tend to be shoved into green just because of nature. ie the entire simic guild. I don't see any green ideals in simic as its mostly just transhumanism with a nature aesthetic, I don't see any heritage or ancestry part of simic. and 3 what do you think the color philosophy of the characters from "The Binding Of Isaac" Isaac, and mom are. I want to say the Isaac is red blue. mostly red for the intense emotions and desire to escape his situation and live free of guilt and pain, blue+red for the creativity and in-depth thoughts for the world he creates in his own head. if he where to be an actual magic card I would have Isaac be RRB with an activated ability R: Roll a d6, on a 1 Isaac gains +1/-1, on a 2 Isaac Gains +2/+0 on a 3 Isaac gains +1/+2 on a 4 Isaac gains flight, on a 5 Isaac gains Trample, and on a 6 Isaac gains double strike. and he would be a 3/3 creature. Mom on the other hand I would say is mono white, for both the religious nature of mom and the controlling rules nature of mom, she even thinks she is doing the right thing the entire time. If mom where to be an actual mtg card I think mom would be costed at 5WWW, when mom enters the battlefield destroy all creatures other than mom, and a 6/6 creature

I think green is described in complex manners in Magic's written material, it's just that the game is not as good at depicting more from green. It sometimes gets the heritage and history aspect, but more often than not it is nature and instinct. I love the idea of replacing DnD alignment with the color pie. It's way better and i have never liked the alignment system anyway (i dont use it when i DM). I think isaac is mono red honestly. I dont think the blue really fits the characterization the game gives (what little there is). But you are spot on with his mom being white. I definitely see mono white, but could argue white red. She is hella vindictive, which is not a white trait.

Most of my other friends who trade stocks are either black/blue or black/red, and while we have a lot in common, they don't really get my interest in ancient texts, institutions (understanding them, but usually not following them), penchant for long nature walks or tendency to obsess over immersive lore or history.

Hey, thanks for commenting and getting into the spirit of this whole philosophical quest. I hate to break it to you, but, you're not a "capitalist oppressor" unless you own capitol (means of production) and exploit the surplus value of your workers. Otherwise, you're just a fan of the system. I do like how you are self aware in the contradiction of being an environmentalist AND a capitalist (we humans are always like this, so it's not weird to have a few contradictions in our philosophies now and again). The thing is, historically, the only people who were both environmentalists AND big fans of corporate private ownership of the means of production were fascists. You wouldn't consider yourself a fascist, would you?

I can do this, lol. So what we are gonna do, is break this down into a couple different elements. 1. The making of cake 2. The eating of cake 3. The existence of cake 1. Making cake is jeskai. There is a set of recipes or instructions that generally fit the idea of making cakes, this is the structure of white. But the rest is about creativity, experimenting with flavors, and making something for people to enjoy. Creativity is Red Blue, so is experimentation. And doing things to make others happy is a white idea (arguably red-white, if making others happy is what makes you happy). 2. Eating cake, well we can get silly here. But it's black if it's because you want to, red if it's because cake is your favorite food, green if it's for sustinance, and white when you share it. It's not blue though. 3. The existence of cake. The cake itself. The idea of cake. Sugar, sweet, indulgence and Celebration. Celebration is a red trait. Indulgence is a black and red trait. If i wanted to boil the idea of food down to a philosophy, it would be green for sustainance. However, we dont eat cake for sustinance, therefore the cake itself is not a green type of food. It is more likely a red and black type of food. A food you eat to celebrate, or as an "extra" food because it tastes good. Cake as a noun has Red Black philosophy. That is my answer.

Science in general is blue, but i think we can get a little more technical if we want. You see, green when mixed with blue is the most curious and blue when mixed with red is the most creative and experimental. Which means when you mix all 3 together, you get a form of the scientific process. So really. I would argue, the historical awareness of green, the technological focus of blue, and the adventurousness of red create the closest thing to "Scientific philosophy" as magic can allow.

For an easy answer to the "conservative libertarian" thing, most of them are just people (usually Americans) that idealize the US as it was founded and seek to return to that, therefor, it is simultaneously a conservative movement, because it desires to conserve and return to American founding values, and simultaneously a liberal movement, because in the context of 1776, the American revolutionaries were radical liberals back when the norm was monarchies, feudalism, theocracies, or highly authoritarian republics, and it still does retain the "F off government" liberal trait. So effectively it's "conservative liberalism" which while sounding paradoxical, would not be the first ideology to have that, others coming to mind being fascism which had a cult of tradition, yet was also hyper-progressive (in the context of the early 20th century) with many of it's progressive views (such as things like environmentalism and certain worker's rights) being adopted by liberals (who treat it's origin like a skeleton in the closet), or communism which as preaches is a moneyless, classless, stateless, society where the workers own the means of production, only for communist states to be totalitarian states with a hyper-fixation on capital which the state had absolute control over and where nepotism and connections gained you your position, with many of it's capital-oriented traits being adopted by hyper-capitalists.

They are each immature in their own ways, but i don't see that as a color philosophy, so much as a product of their age. I would say they each exhibit forms of creative intelligence which would splash a little blue into the red white, but not very prominently. You'll find that most super heroes are Red White, sometimes with a splash of another color. Though this also depends on who is writing them. Zach Snyders super heroes are cynical and self absorbed, which makes them feel far more Black/Red or Black/Blue, rather than the classic Red White.

Democracy: Jeskai. Red because Democracy is justified philosophically as a way give freedom and power to individuals subject to a larger system, but because it is still supported by a govt structure, it is 100% white. Blue, because it requires structures subject to adaptability and arguments of "logic" or "reason". Pacifism: my snap answer is white cause the card called pacifism is white. But i think there might be more to it. Pacifism is a choice. An ideology about conflict. One in which the adherent believes in using other means than violence no matter what. I think blue could apply as well as white. When you imagine the avenues a pacifist would go down to avoid violent conflict, its mostly blue answrs. Advancing technology to make violence unnecessary. Discussions and reasoning with the opposing force. So blue white is possible. Militarism: if you seperate it from the types of nations that would use it, like nationalists and fascists, it is definitely White. It might be solely a white ideology. About a structure of power able to protect, attack, and influence using force. These are white traits. But the thing about Militarism, is it's propensity to fall into dictatorships, fascism, and nationalism, so it would be ridiculously easy for other colors to make their way in.

Personally, I LOVE Capitalism. Sure, it gets a bad reputation (except for school, which probably made people hate Capitalism even more, for crying out loud, the school system was invented by a well-known monopolist), I do believe that ANYONE can benefit from Capitalism if they're creative enough! Since one of the core benefits of Capitalism is free market it rewards self-improvement! Take the "Penny to a House Challenge" (or Paperclip to a House if you're a fan of TED Talks) for example. You take a dirt cheap item (like a penny or a paperclip), and trade it for something of higher value, like a pen or a ping pong paddle. Sell it or trade it for something even better. Then you repeat the process. Eventually, you'll end up with a House! See that? ANYONE can benefit from the Penny to a House Challenge, even from just a mere penny! Just goes to show how we're all born from a blank slate! It won't be easy, but with enough resolve, you can do it! I believe in you! I won't deny that Capitalism is black. It's inherently selfish, and it doesn't help when a lot of capitalists tend to be greedy and REFUSE to share their knowledge of how they succeed and live the best lives possible. Corporate executives tend to do stupid things for seemingly no reason, like Nintendo getting mad at you for pirating old games even though they DON'T MAKE MONEY ON THE GAME ANYWAYS! But if it were me, I'd say that Capitalism is Blue/Black, since it rewards creativity and self-improvement, and the fact that ANYONE can benefit from this! I see no reason why everyone has to keep their steps for riches and success a secret. As a black planeswalker, I ask my fellow black philosophers, "HOW DOES THIS BENEFIT YOU AT ALL?!" As for me and my color pie philosophy as a whole, I was surprised to figure out that I embody ALL FIVE COLORS! Grixis is my favorite Tri-Color Philosophy since I relate to it the most (With blue being my favorite of the three), I still value white because I LOVE making friends and sharing my secrets to wealth and self-improvement, and I value green because I'm a truth-seeker and discovery is the reason why I live! Oh, I mentioned that Grixis is my favorite Tricolor, but I haven't told you why I relate to red. It's because I'm very passionate and tend to try CRAZY and out-of-the-box experiences, and I also tend to violate the laws of societal norms WITHOUT EVEN TRYING (That’s right, I wear perfume! What are ya gonna do about it?) Very entertaining video! Very insightful and life-changing! As a blue planeswalker, I thank you for helping me aquire the knowledge I seek! There are large themes about identity and finding your place in the world. Also the multiverse it takes place in, paradox space, has the interesting property in which everything that exists, in some way in some fashion, is destined to eventually play a key part in bringing about its own existance.

Tribalism =/= racism. Tribalism is about ingroup vs outgroup, this is most common within families, religions, and political beliefs. Your Gruul biases are showing.

I should have done a better job of separating the two thoughts. I was saying both tribalism and racism are bw traits. Racism and tribalism have a lot of things in common, but arent the same thing. Also, hey, im not gruul 😡 lol

"Capitalism = just Black" obviously shows how much you know about economics lol. A free market is as Green as it gets as it's very philosophy mimics nature: The strong eat the weak and the 'creatures' who adapt survive. A free, unregulated market is entirely based on the interdependence of all economic actors, aka supply and demand. Monopolies who disrupt this network crash the system and fail, unless the Law (white) protects them from bankruptcy such as what the US gov't did in 2008. Therefore, a capitalist society is one built on a Green philosophy, who's machinations often develop into Black exploit from OUR own greed, if unchecked and also not endorsed by it's White government. If fascism= W+Blk+R then capitalism is W+Blk+G.

I actually agree with a lot of your color relationships here, and like i said, these are mostly my own interpretations of the Philosophies. It's just so weird that you decided to open your disagreement by trying to condescend to me about economics. I'm glad you watched the video enough to get that far in it and paid enough attention to make this relationship of bwg. But why do you assume i make my claims in ignorance, just because you disagree? And why do people love assert that capitalism is human nature so much. They said the same thing about feudalism and slavery when those were being defended by hierarchies as well. If you're willing to have a good faith discussion, below is the invite to my discord. I'd love to have a chat. Humans have been around for like 200k-300k years. Capitalism is less than 500 years old. It's a blip in our existence that will be outmoded. discord.gg/J7duU76g9F

@@ItsNotGoodShow It was a rough opening shot tbh, but I just find it frustrating that so many people assume certain things to be inherently good or evil when these are temporal manifestations of duality. The truth is that as 'evil' as many people think capitalism is, it has simultaneously created wonders and possibilities beyond our ancestors greatest imaginations: the very possibility to share information on these electronic devices instantly and across any distance; and just the same on how many think that socialism is inherently 'good,' they overlook all the monstrosities and calamities committed in it's pursuit. Suffering and joy are but two sides of the same coin; the world is perfect just the way it is. It is ourselves we must change if we truly want to change it. That's real magic in my opinion - the capacity to transform one's self from within and without. We are all on our own journeys of transformation and growth, and to that end you have my respect. I just wanted to highlight some often overlooked universal truths to shed a bit of light on the subject. Nothing is as simple as it initially seems; paradoxes abound in every corner, but the TRUTH is in the duality itself.

To be fair, i didn't say capitalism was evil in this video. I dont believe evil exists. I said it's philosophy is black aligned. And i tried to make it as clear as possible in this video that black Philosophy is not inherently evil and white philosophy is not inherently good. There are good and bad things in all of the color Philosophies. Like I said, I'd love to have a more in depth conversation about all this with you in a more conducive environment(youtube comments are the best communication center). Because, from my perspective, your Characterization of capitalism and what it has done vs what you see socialism having done is very fascinating to me. Given the history surrounding both, and the socities around them. It is intersection to me that you say these electronic devices we are using are a product of capitalism, when the technology they use was invented by government funded programs with no profit incentives. (In case you didn't know, the technology for computers and cell phones were not invented by the corporations that sell them to us.)

@@ItsNotGoodShow Actually it starts with citizen innovators. When they discover a new idea they seek funding. If there is no immediate profit incentive, as there is no production infrastructure and it is more-so a research and development project, then one may obtain funding through gov't sponsorship since it is unlikely they would be financed through a bank. THE PROBLEM is that governments do not create anything and do not act as efficiently or effectively as private individuals/organizations with a profit incentive. In fact they don't produce anything. They can take from someone and give it to another by means of force. Apart from defense and regulation that's all they can do. When they spend money, it's borrowed from the people in advance, even by generations, and it all comes out of your own savings even though the actual number may never change. Yes, they adopted the technology which had been developing over the entire 19th century in order to further advance their ever growing federal administration systems and military, but the second they release their confidential R&D programs to the private sector the technology accelerates exponentially and takes on a life of it's own. The point is we should not be relying on our governments to solve our problems for us the way children who are dependent on their parents like some commie who's entire family starved from famine the second after their "people's" revolution took place.. Same thing for corporations! Humanity needs to grow up, accept responsibility and recognize their own agency in the world instead of looking to someone else to solve all of their problems. Or maybe we've already forgotten what the National Socialist Party of Germany did to the world less than a century ago? Half of the population sure seems to be jumping back on that band wagon and its because they're too arrogant to accept their position in society, too pitiful to change the course of their own life and too ignorant of all that has come before them.

Know what governments and corporations CAN do for you, but also know the bullshit they say they can but ultimately CAN'T do for you, because we are all our own sovereign states of being.

Things like bacteria and viruses are black green as they are natural pieces of disease and decay. That's my best take. Lol.
