That's dumb. Your physical size is not an indicator of your overall importance, which is itself kind of a useless concept. I feel like Rick and Morty put it pretty well, in a way. Sentiments don't matter. Philosophy doesn't matter. Most of the universe is light-years away and doesn't matter. What matters is what we can touch. What matters is money, and power, and how you use it to make the world better in whatever way you see fit. You want to be more important? Find something that matters. Make money. Leverage it.

The funny thing about the Schrodinger's Cat thought experiment, was that Schrodinger proposed it to try to show how stupid he thought the idea of quantum superposition was, but ended up creating an analogy that actually fits quantum theory, so his sarcastic attempt to discredit it ironically became one of the best known examples of it.

Like all good shows, it will have been designed so that the audience relates in some way to all the main characters. If you can make them feel like they've personally identified more than anyone else watching, bonus points for the show developers

In reality, we are neither of them, because this show is fictional. Although it does express the beliefs and the philosophical convictions of the creators, it has no bearing on reality. At the end of the day, the philosophical conclusions made in this show are no different in value than any other philosophical schools of thought. They are just BELIEFS. Not facts. I love this show, but sometimes its fans just blindly accept all of the philosophical claims made in the show as reality... but this is not necessarily the case. You dont have to be either Rick or Jerry. There are other alternatives in reality.

imo its obvious that Rick's entire motivation for why he does what he does is to protect his family, while simultaneously pretending he doesn't care about any of them as to not look vulnerable, which in a way, is also to protect his family. If all his enemies figured out that he actually did care about his family (therefore making him vulnerable), then they have an easy way into Rick's head. So, he has to keep up the facade that he doesn't give a single fuck about anything, and that's why he's the "rickest rick of them all". He's the only rick that actually has the capacity to give a fuck while pretending he doesn't and he uses it to his advantage.

This stockholm syndrome of an interpretation really shows how twisted one´s logic and how big one´s blind spot can become when you want to keep identifying with a highly ambivalent, despicable figure like Rick. From the first few episodes on, it should be totally clear that his no. 1 motivation is to be no.1, the smartest, the most powerful, master of the universe, for the sake of it. On numerous occasions it´s clear that he doesn´t care for the safety or sanity of his family (or for any good in the universe), in fact he´s harming & endangering their lives (especially Morty´s) on a daily basis, often using them like (replaceable/ reproducable) tools to increase his senseless, quasi godlike power. The few moments when he shows real (not the usual faked) empathy or even willingness to sacrifice his life for Morty only show that he´s just an _almost_ absolute asshole / they imply he´s actually a bipolar personality and has his "weak moments of truth". To me it´s quite clear that "Rick & Morty" masterfully demonstrates the consequences of isolating power, the principle of narcissism (and "bad science"). Since capitalism is essentially based on that principle, and most participants deny that fact as long as it serves them, that also explains why so many people oversee/ apologise Rick´s actual character.

Rick is an Existentialist. Morty is a Utilitarian. This is best shown when Morty kills Fart. When Morty learns that Fart will kill all life in the universe he kills him. He did the math and decided that if Fart dies then the universe of gaseous beings and carbon based life forms will not harm one another. Ironically it's that same utilitarian arithmetic that led Morty to first kill Krombopulous Michael. People seem to forget that. Morty starts the episode as a killer and ends it as a killer. You may point to this adventure as Morty's biggest character development. I say it's the most character affirming episode for Morty's utilitarianism.

Morty is less Utilitarian in the Purge episode, instead evoking classic morality (save the girl, stop the evil-doers). That being said I think that episode is deliberately confused: Morty acts far out of character (purgenol or otherwise) while offering direct commentary on how his character is static. Overall I think the writers are just trying to point out the extreme tension in Morty: because Rick isn't 'wrong' in embracing the absurd, Morty constantly is torn between a more "normal" non-nihilistic frame of mind and the meaninglessness of all his adventures.

bforce909 Theorizing about morty's is pretty fun; I think the show only works if we're following "our" Morty (otherwise it devolves into infinite realities and prevents us from emotionally investing in the fate of one set of Rick & Morty; I could be mistaken though). A better question is this: Is the show's Bird Person "Our Rick's Bird Person?" If no, why would Rick care so much about a single Bird Person's death? If yes, how can that be reconciled with the Cronenburg event of Rick Potion #9? I've thought of a couple answers that work, but none that are super satisfying or logically consistent.

Ragnarok Azor That it did for me as well. In my lack of universal knowledge, I, at least for myself, can't come to agree on the idea of life's meaninglessness. I feel like the breaking of everything down into mundane pointless things is detrimental to living. like for sure what we call love is caused by chemicals in your body reacting in a certain way, I find that that is ONLY the scientific part of it, and that there is much more to the Universe than just that which is scientific evidence. I will say I can't help but admit the plausibility of a meaningless universe, but it just seems a bit of a projected definition. The failures of individual humans to find meaning. They can't reconcile many questions, and conclude by projecting their experience onto all of existence, and all people. I find such a world view a bit to easy to settle on. like a cop out. I know many people who have found meaning to life, and I admire that.

I've been a nihilist for 1/3rd of my life now. I have never believed in a purpose in life, and 8 years ago I officially believed free will did not exist. I don't value anything and I only mourn the dead because they won't be there to be with me anymore. I'm not sorry for them dying, I'm sorry for me having to live on without them. Now, the answer to 'what makes Rick tick' is probably the same answer for me: I just go with the flow. Believing that life is pointless doesn't make me want to kill myself because I still feel happiness and emotions and when I die, everything will be gone, which just means I can no longer enjoy anything then. You don't need anything to make you tick is my point. I mean, there's no reason to live, but there's also no reason to die. Well, there is a reason to live: dying would be a bit boring. Rick himself is also clearly trying to make the most of it.

no it would not be boring. I am not sure if I am a nialist but for many years I did not see a point to existence. I want to end my life because to me I would rather feel nothing than feel pain and misery. unlike you though my emotions for others prevent me from ending my own life. I may not wabt to live but others do and others will need me when they feel misery. I don't want people to be like me so I like making others happy and I will do so for as long as I can until the day I feel no one will care if I die. We are not our physical bodies. Most people are slaves to their desires so they never see beyond their desires but all life makes up one being. I talk to you as the part of my true self which is attached to this physical form. When I die my true self will continue to live but my attachment to this form will be dead. I speak as my true self but so do you and yet we both speak from different perspectives within that self. No different from how our physical attachment to our lives is made up of seemingly infinite different distinguishable parts. We are everything experiencing itself.

This is why I love this show so much. It shows that our existence is basically meaningless but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it while it lasts. If everything's meaningless you can do anything you please, because nothing you do will have a lasting impact. Whether it's because there's an infinite amount or realities or because the passage of what we call time will eventually wash away everything that we've done. Or at least that's the message I like to take from it. Criminals are only criminals because they're doing things that are *virtually* not allowed. Nothing isn't allowed, you can do anything, you'll just have to find a way to deal with what happens afterwards. But the universe doesn't care if some human killed another. We're just arrangements of particles that form a living being and will eventually become something else once the living being that we are dies. In the end what truly matters is what matters to you personally, because it's what gives flavor to your life, your experience. That and all the pleasures and pains that come with it. And even then it doesn't truly matter but hey at least you had a blast while you lived your inconsequential existence, so who cares that it doesn't matter anyways? See how paradoxical that is? Even meaninglessness itself is meaningless, how insane is that? It's actually completely sane, but I'm gonna stop right here because I don't feel like going on writing. Enjoy your lives people!

Alienation from society and environment caused by not keeping up common values, traditions (believing in god), and ideologies (thus being nihilist) makes human feel alone and helpless. This mixed with the philosophical objective of well known figures like Descartes or Plato of again separating our own subjective ideas in order to understand the universe in it's pure form drives subjective knowledge as useless, however both Plato, Descartes and many more (Isac Newton for example) used the example of god as a way of giving meaning back to the universe, after all in Descartes theory he doubted of the whole existence of our species only maintaining confidence in the existence of his own mind, however once he brought the idea of a divine being to the table he started to "prove" once again everything he had doubted. without god though we still have the scientific and philosophical need to understand the universe in it's pure form, seen outside of our own eyes and mind. but without the idea of a divine being that gives meaning to our lives we are left with a big changing universe in which we are an insignificant nothing and doesnt care the least about us. our goals and self created purposes and irrelevant from a scientific and philosophical point of view, one of them at least.

Death for example is frightening mainly because (apart from the fact that fear of death is biologically predetermined in all the living organisms) you are going to be alone forever and inevitably. Belief in god makes people feel that after death they will not be left alone. Heck, even sinners believing in god, often claim that they will go to hell, nevertheless they continue to believe. Because honestly, when you start to think over death not distancing, and thus feeling it, even idea of eternal torment is not as horrific as idea of eternal alienation.

This show's philosophy seems to forget that everything in this Universe is relative. Relatively to the Universe itself, humanity is pointless and is just a speck of dust, but relatively to our own world and to the other people, humanity is highly significant. Humans forever changed the world, and they constantly change each other's lives, so if they don't influence the Universe as a whole doesn't make their existence any less significant. Humans are meant to influence themselves and the world they live in.

Swiggity Swooty If you don't mind my commenting, I think that the biggest struggle in the show is the attempt to come to terms with both of those things. I think that Rick symbolizes that the best because intellectually he knows that everything is meaningless, while his deeply repressed feelings still cling to the belief that at least his family and friends matter. Him trying to come to terms with objective and subjective reality seem to screw him over quite a bit.

The problem isn't nihilism being depressing or self-defeating which most people would call it. The problem is that human beings are so fuckin deluded with their self-importance to the point where they gotta make themselves feel like this vast universe is created specifically for them and no one else. Yet, we human beings will all suffer and die just like all the other 'insignificant' living things that have existed in this universe. Hence, human being need to believe that life has a meaning, a purpose eventhough every fuckin single day, they clearly observe non-human species being fully capable of living in their meaningless lives. Rick and Morty's existentialist foundations are what I so deeply love about the show. I see myself in both rick and Monty, which is not to say a genius or a child, but someone painfully aware of their purposeless existence. I too have been driven like rick to self destruction and isolation. And someone who still has moments of hope. It's a daily struggle one I feel somedays I will lose, other days I may win. But few shows have shown such deep compassion for such suffering while hiding it behind such side splittingly bitterly funny humour.

But I think it's a logical process and conclusion; not to be disappointing by seeing the world through a unmystical and rather, crude and rough way but be marveled by it's intricacies. Also, emotions and logic aren't entirely separate entities, they just are usually staged that way because anything that's pure emotion isn't valid.

Man, i remember that episode with Morty playing that game, and it reminds me of all those existential crisis moments i've had like, what if we actually were in a game like that right now? What if in "reality" we actually had the technology to do shit like that?? That would be a dumbass move for me to do though, like why would i pick such a shit virtual reality game? Wasting my virtual reality life playing even shittier virtual realities like sims... then waking up from this "game" and being like "Man what a fucking waste of game tokens, let's go play as that Hitler character instead."

I don't see how this has anything to do with 8-Bit Philosophy. But either way, it was a damn good philosophy analysis on Rick and Morty! It shows that the creators behind this video really are fans of the show themselves. Have you considered making a seperate series out of this? You know, going through a particular TV show from the philosophical aspects? That would be awesome. Then again, since you labeled it a _special edition of 8-Bit Philosophy_, this was probably more of a one-of, specifically to acknowledge Rick and Morty (and its surprisingly heavy themes on the meaning of existence and the purpose of oneself).

We're still making regular old 8-Bit Philosophy's, but we also really love writing about newer content like Rick and Morty, GTA V, etc. To answer your question, we're not quite sure. We're going to keep the old-fashioned 8-Bits going, but also do a lot more writing about new games and shows we love.

I never doubted that you'd continue your original 8-Bit format - especially when considering that the term would end up as a misleading relic if all future episodes used the respective media's footage rather than pixel art animation, haha. No, it was a reference to "La Pianista" ("The Piano Teacher"), a very disturbing film by Michael Haneke. I love the references on this channel. I've enjoyed all of Haneke's work, save "The White Ribbon", and that's only because I haven't watched it yet. I forgot the other reference, it wasn't familiar to me. But Michael Haneke is an Austrian film director auteur.

Micheal Haneke is a pretty interesting filmmaker, I remember watching some of his works (Funny Games and Amour) I seen The Piano Teacher a couple times, still own it on DVD (As a "Criterion Collection" release. Criterion movies are pretty expensive)

I started watching this show when I was 15 and I was going through this depressive episode because I was just realizing god isn't real and my parents only believe in him because they are scared and life is meaningless. I was just expecting something comedic but boy was I shocked when I realized it was much more than that. Kinda made me even more depressed but eventually made me appreciate life a little more

Sammy Belskus Well I really haven't thought about that a lot, I think the big bang theory and how we evolved from single celled organisms to fish to monkeys to humans is the most probable answer. The reason I don't believe in god is historical and scientific knowledge shows why we would make a fake god and chose to believe in him no matter what and science also shows how a celestial being like god isn't real. I don't wanna explain the whole thing cause it would take like 5 paragraphs but if you wanna know just ask r/trueathiesm why the idea of god is stupid

+ECW Platinum the Big Bang theory doesn't make something out of nothing. Something has to be eternal to create the universe. And it boggles my mind that somehow randomness made a single cell organisms to multi cell organisms (how does that happen?) to fish to monkeys to humans. That takes a whole lot of faith and belief in things that still need a whole lot of proof to become fact. There's nothing in science that disproves the existence of a celestial being that caused the earth to be. I think you have just been told that atheism and macroevolution are true, not to really question it to anyone other than super biased people.
