The Photographer's Story - ADAM GIBBS

Thank you to Adam Gibbs for contributing to the 3rd episode in The Photographer's Story series. Adam was an obvious choice with his wealth of experience and of course he also loves a tree or two ;) It was great to listen to some of Adam's thoughts and light bulb moments that have informed and inspired his own direction in photography - a path he followed after investing the time to study and understand his work. Although the foundation of his journey differs to my own, you'll see that we both arrived at a place with a similar outlook. I would not hesitate to say that dumb luck is responsible for the existence of 100% of amateur photographers. I fell in love with photography because of a few dumb luck photos I took early on in life. I’ve only recently started to understand how to position myself to take advantage of that dumb luck. I’m thankful that such precious moments are so rare that they need to be described with the word luck, because that’s what makes them so special in the first place. Fortune favors the prepared.

On my walk this morning I was watching the rising sun interacting with the trees. Until recently, I’m next sure I noticed them. Now, I’ve come to appreciate any variety of tree as a possible subject and figuring out when is the best time to capture the light. Love what you each provide.

I used to shoot Kodachrome 25 and 64, then have 4"x5" internegatives made, and then C-prints from them; A very good exposition on color.

Simon, I've followed you and Adam for some time and for some reason, Adam's description of his goal about looking for certain characteristics of light really resonated with me. Finding a warm backlit subject against a cool background is something I will seek when I begin shooting again. Another situation inspired by Thomas Heaton was a shot across a pond as the sun rose. Mist rising over the pond as the wind shifted due to the warming air made for beautiful conditions for an image. The temperature and dew point were just right. I will consider microclimate, reflected light, and other "2nd order" factors when shooting resumes. I envision a video "Adventures with reflected light" with Ben Horne, Adam, and maybe others discussing a favorite image and the conditions that led to the image. Thanks for the great video, made stronger by insightful collaboration!

Hi Simon - I have watched several of your videos during the last few weeks and have found them very inspiring - I can't wait to get out again. One question if I may, in several of your editing sections you crop to specific proportions - 5x4 16x9 etc. Why do you do this rather than to specific elements in the picture?

I am a little envious of people having their own profound or light bulb moments. I had a ‘moment’ but it wasn’t mine per se. In 2005 ish I saw Ansel Adams’ El Capitan for the first time, and it changed my attitude towards the world and I connected much more with the natural world. A few months later I bought my first DSLR, life was bliss for a bit, then life happens, and I went nearly 9 years without holding a camera but my appreciation for the natural world was still present and I was a still a regular visitor to national parks. Two years ago, after going through some rough times, I picked up a camera again and it (with my daughter) saved my life.

We tend to see what we are looking for. My wife and I call it the Search Image (typically used for things like Redwing Black Bird nests, snakes etc.). Modify your search image for what you want to find (the trick is to be open minded enough to grab something worthwhile not in the search image!) - like contrasting light, macro compositions etc. Sounds like what you two have done.

I am with Adam on this one. Light is everything. Even the definition of photography from the Greek word is “writing with light”. Good light can make even the most boring scene look very interesting . However, the best vista without good light can look boring and uninspiring.

Good light makes a huge difference but the trick is knowing what type of light suits the scene. Also consider that fantastic light won't save a poor composition ;)

I don't think I've noticed your logo before . . . very, very nice. I also quite like your opening . . . logo on a black background. I'd extended it to 4 or 5 seconds instead of three. I wasn't paying attention when the video started playing and had to restart so I could catch the opening. LOL . . . not that you need my suggestions. :D Cheers.

i like your photographs but you should not give them for 40% off away. I fear after the lockdown there will be an avalanche of price deductions and a lot of desperate photographers and artists will sell their pictures too cheaply to make any money at all. But in the long term, price dumping will impoverish all artists.

@@SimonBaxterPhotography i wish you good success. I know it are hard times. I am a retoucher and make a living with freelance post-production. So many shooting were cancelled and productions are stopped... I do not know when or if a kind of normality returns....
