Hello Alex, in my view, you’ve created one of the best-if not the best-photography and art-focused KZbin channels out there. I’ve been watching your videos since the very beginning and am captivated by every lesson I can learn from you. Thank you for your tireless work! I believe it’s appreciated not only by me, but by all of your followers. I hope you’re able to continue producing this wonderful content for a long time, and I look forward to everything that’s yet to come. 🙏

That is why you became one of our favorite youtubers. Because you talk about things we need and others don't talk about. Partly because it is not as financially sound. I have recommended you here and there.

Your channel is one of my favorites because it addresses the real goal, the image, not buying toys, ie gear. Real photographers show their photos, not their gear.

It's so easy to get distracted with all the technicalities of the gear, assuming it should make your photography better. A wide spread misconception.

Hey Alex, I credit you and Ted Forbes for fueling my passion for photography since I picked up a camera a few years ago. Thanks! The Community has also become the thing that's been elusive until now - a spot for photographers to help each other grow in a supportive environment. The two venues are great together.

Easily one of my favorite photography channels Alex. No gear, just creativity along with introductions to other photographers. I was drawn to you because I am a photographer who loved the photographers that you loved and used to read about them and was inspired by them. You were passionately talking about great images and their image makers. I found your channel in lockdown and it was very reassuring. It wasn’t about selling equipment and vapid ideas. Your work is rich and valuable.

I'm not a photographer but my daughter recently graduated with a degree in photography and is now trying to establish herself as a photographer. My daughter's passion has spilled over to me and I caught onto your platform maybe 2 yrs ago and your passion has caused me to share many of your videos with my daughter which has inspired photography conversations between us. My daughter's passion however leans more to fashion photography and specifically editorial fashion photography which I'm sure you know is a long hard road to climb. That story was just to let you know your work on KZbin has not gone for naught. I have clicked the like button often on your channel, hopefully that helps. Please keep up the good work!

I suffer from the affliction that you mentioned in this video. I start watching and, before it’s over, I feel compelled to jump up and go out and shoot. You are one of the few focusing on the heart of photography: making an image that I’m proud to hang on my wall. Not the technical rules I already know how to break. I shoot almost exclusively in film. Have been for 40 years and I struggle to find other photographers who want to, or have the desire to discuss the actual image. Thank you for what you do. You help to keep me going.

I had been a passionate follower of Ted Forbes "the art of photography" and the dicline of art in his videos reflects the development of social media to a like-generating machine with decreasing impact on thoughts, dialogues and passion aimed for producing the rapid money. Your channel is maybe a last resort for creative photography not boasting on Megapixels, ISO and shots per second. Maybe an offer outside youtube et al. will attract me....

To be honest, my passion for Photography kind of took a backset about 9 years ago because back then, everyone was obsessed with gear and sharpness, etc., and I felt that the foundations and art is being ignored. But when I stumbled upon your channel a few months ago, everything came rushing back because you chose to create content about the art itself regardless of what gear you have. I have never felt this way back when i bought my bulky D90. Now I am always on the lookout for subjects I can shoot whenever I go out. You have reignited the art in me, and I Thank You for that. Here's to more years of creativity and devotion to what I would refer to as the Soul of Photography.

Hi Alex, your channel is the only one that I come back to time and again. I recently made a video on my small channel about wanting to stay away from gear videos and it actually had a much larger response than my other videos so I feel that there is definitely an audience for this kind of content. I’m now steering my channel towards the types of videos that I want to make based on projects I have planned. Count me in with your idea. I’m always looking for content with a little more knowledge and depth than that which KZbin seems to want to show me. Thanks for doing what you do on here.

Straight up: Your channel is cool water in a hot, dry land. You talk about the art of making photographs, its joys and frustrations. I watch your channel and come away with ideas, questions to consider, challenges to pursue. That's as opposed to banal gear reviews, self-promotions, and basic how-to vids, all of which exist in profusion on KZbin. Your channel is one that would actually be missed were it no longer available, certainly by me because you make me think about photography. Thank you for that.

Have you considered starting a Patreon? Most of the KZbinrs I follow, particularly those covering specialist topics, have one to supplement the whims of the algorithm. It would also allow people to support your videos at a level they're financially comfortable with. Either way, I hope you continue to make the videos you want to make, at a pace that doesn't burn you out. It's so refreshing to hear someone talking about the art photography; about photographers themselves, their inspirations and influences, and the stories behind their photos.

Thanks Alex! I think one of the reasons videos on the technical aspects of photography are so popular, is that many people are more interested in the technology than the art. If that gives them joy, that’s great. But, I think at some point they may feel a disparity between their images and the images of other photographers they admire. They’ve mastered their cameras and computers, and realize they still aren’t getting what they want. Perhaps you can market your videos in a way that attracts folks in that predicament. That’s what attracted me to join your community!

Hi Alex. A direct side-effect of watching your channel and your showcasing of work from new (to me) photographers is that I now make a real effort to attend photo exhibitions regularly as a way of seeing work that I'd never come across otherwise. This really helps me understand what I like in a photo but I do sometimes come away from them scratching my head too! Gear/technique videos do have their place (I'd never have bought my 85mm prime without watching one of those) but so do channels like this that cover the art rather than the science of photography. I'll keep watching as long as you keep making content.

well I have to say that your enthusiasm has spurred me on. Unfortunately algorithms and focus groups are not geared towards creation, only regurgitation. Hi Alex. Community groups like the one you and others are starting, Thomas Heaton, for example, will cater to a demographic who reflect those people watching that channel. If a wider demographic can be reached, easier said than done, then community groups can spread and prosper. So long as the people who think of themselves as the gatekeepers of photography are avoided, and inclusive groups can be formed, then it will be a wonderful thing. I refer people to, Nick Knight's 100 Photographers series, as a place to gather references. You are doing a similar thing with your channel and long may it continue. Enjoy the rest of your day.

PS: I forgot to mention you are the reason i now have a collection of great books from photographers; many whom you covered in your videos. Thanks to the videos i bought a book on George Hurrell and his work (the creator of "the Hollywood stile"). Even the 1932 example of "their" photoshop is shown; with before and after retouching. A lighting stile I am currently working with; with great results and happy customers. Thanks to modern LED COB lights and huge Fresnel heads we can now create such a look at reasonable effort and economically sound.

As you know I am a supporter of your channel. I think what’s underneath the issue you raised is that probably most people who have cameras and do photography are not actually passionate about photography. I think camera companies take advantage of this by constantly promoting gear that will not actually make people better photographers but will push other buttons. It’s a dilemma for you and your request makes sense. I hope it works.

After 130 videos and 18 months I'm beyond chasing anything popular. If anything im making weirder videos on purpose to thin the herd and get down to the real channel fans! Ha! I literally did a one off video acting like a missing 90s Australian Photography Tv show host! 😂 For me youtube is my film school and the brutal feedback of strangers is helpful. Today a guy said the camera work in my last video made him sick 🤢 and i agreed with him! I was running and gunning trying to film handheld with a 5d mark iv! Massive respect Alex, I cant imagine doing KZbin for 4 years. For me I only do one video a week and even the scripted ones with loads of b-roll to edit in take me three hours to script, shoot and upload. Piece to camera ones take me an hour to shoot and upload. Maybe reducing output would be good. I might start trying to make proper mini docs and put out one a month instead, my way of trying to get to my goal of being a documentary film maker some day! You're a true one off and you really gave me a boost when i started out KZbinring myself. I wont forget. So shines a good deed in a weary world.

Hi Alex, I hope you will continue to make these videos because you do something that few others do. I enjoy a good gear review but Chris and Jordan or Tony and Chelsea have that nailed and it's a spectator sport for me because I'm never going to spend £5000 on a camera. I enjoy a good technique video and I've learned a lot about lighting and effects from Gavin Hoey and Karl Taylor, but again, I don't have a studio and nobody is going to hire me to photograph their products, so it really is interesting but it's not going to be me. But your videos introduce me to names I would otherwise not have heard and show me images I would otherwise not have seen, and when I hear about those photographers and see those images I can absolutely imagine that I could go and do likewise, so thank you for that. Also, I too was raised on Tony Hart from the early days of the amazing "Vision On" and my children watched and imitated "Hartbeat" and I think he must have inspired more people to try the visual arts than anyone else on the planet.

Recently I noticed a trend, yes photography and youtube are at a cross roads. While I understand the need to make things fiancially viable, multiple subscription models start becoming extremely expensive. Only being able to access content as a subscriber I understand, how ever I see subscriptions especially automatic renewing ones like concrete cancer. Just recently I recieved notification of a subscription renewal that I had even forgotten I had subscribed to and don't even use. There are other platforms that captured me as a subscriber even though I did not choose to be a subscriber and the enormous difficulty of trying to unsubsribe is extremely frustrating. Thats my rant.

@rayjermyn45416 сағат бұрын
Alex, never underestimate your influence. On days when my eyes or backside are lazy, you provide motivation through "The Promise " that after 50 years of photography, I can still improve through learning. You can easily have a bigger channel by selling out. You could less easily make a video project around the TPE to sell to a network like Netflix to expand your reach. The best craftsmen do not seek volume or fame, they seek satisfaction.
@Sven-R4 сағат бұрын
The issue is, it must be financially viable at the same time. Which it is not possible, if the videos don't get the number of views to get enough revenue through KZbin. Satisfaction doesn't bring food on the table. If some videos make 20$ of ad revenue, it's an hourly income no one would get out of bed in the morning.

A couple of comments. 1. I looked at your homepage and it does not correspond with your message today. Looking at recent video titles, today's message seems closer to the actual content. So, you might look at rewriting that mission statement. Not easy, I know, but it might help people to decide to describe. I do look at that before I subscribe at any level. 2. Other platforms are fairer in profit sharing. You might post nearly identical videos on other platforms with links to them. I am seeing other content creators doing that recently.

I seem to have a similar background to you, having studied photography to higher degree level but not quite so successfully in terms of commerce and it's your videos about photographers that first attracted me to your channel but as you say these videos gain little traction. This mirrors my experience from various online forums, DP reviewin particular. A great many amateur photographers are very wary of art, even to the point of dismissing acknowledged experts in the field of photography, that is except Ansel Adams, who is primarily used to justify all airts of excessive post production techniques. What many seem to want is endless discussions about gear, which always matters whilst strenuously denying the existence of G.A.S. and simple recipes for the perfect picture. It's all rather sad really.

A KZbinr is a content creator, not a creative. We must be clear eyed about this. That is the KZbin business model. This must be understood. KZbin is not a public space for creatives. It is a vehicle for generating financial streams from both advertising AND selling data. The cleverness is that, unlike other media KZbin does not have to make its own content. It pays on commission for content already uploaded. The algorithms are structured to reward the uploading of content that drives clicks. The reward for the content creator becomes views, likes and subscriptions. So the content creator is manipulated to generate more and more, and upload it in a way that the algorithm rewards. The content is actually irrelevant to this business model. And oh boy, is it successful. This success is evidence of the hunger in society for such a medium. Cat videos outperform the best creative content by orders of magnitude. That said, the quality of content matters in a genre. So creatives, being creatives, focus on that. And do it very well. The real reward for creatives is public recognition. On the downside, this business reward model also generates a punitive element. A drop in views causes the algorithm to deprioritise a channel's recommendations resulting in a rapid decline for a channel. There is consistent pressure to upload. This causes burnout. And, demoralisation. The business model doesn't care. All that matters to the corporate stakeholders is the growth of views which drive revenue. Lest you think me a cynic: I am a subscriber to this channel. I pay for KZbin premium so I have an ad free experience, because KZbin is my primary viewing medium. KZbin has grown to become a huge conveyor and repository of human culture. I value it greatly. But let us be clear eyed about this. That is not it's purpose. KZbin is not a public space. Content resides on the servers at the whim of the financial stakeholders of Google. It costs money to keep it there. It can be erased permanently with a keystroke for reasons that have nothing to do with cultural, historic, educational or intellectual value. Nothing on the internet is permanent. That is a misconception. Back up your content in a permanent and independent form. I hope you keep going because I think you deserve success and reward for your effort. I enjoy your content because of its quality. Cheers Lawrie.

Hi Alex, to provide input and feedback; should that be of use: 1. The reason I subscribed was because of your conversation with us about what a photograph is; how different people create their art and what is special or different about it. 2. I like the real conversation stile; you tell a story 3. You have a great voice and personality 4. I do not like the scribbling (sorry for the word choice 😉) on a photo stile of video; it distracts from the story and what you are telling us. Love you videos and content; and as you maybe saw in my reaction to your post on Scots video; I'm looking forward to the video about how a full-frame sensor will guarantee my Instagram followers count climbs 😇; i need followers!!

I'm tired of the saturation of content. Everything about everything is on some media platform. It's good in some ways because education/ learning can be greatly enhanced. On the other hand, it can lead to brain overload which can result in increased health risks. Rumble started out great but there to it has become saturated with content. Trying to make a living in this environment is a cutthroat business. I did some research on what type of photography sells best and it's landscape. What on Earth hasn't been photographed and made in Artificial Intelligence?

I went to your video list and selected Popular. Several videos have views in the six figure range. Now I don't feel you have deviated from your original content goals, so what has happened here? It would benefit both the creator and KZbin to have this content promoted. Have subscribers decided to move away from KZbin? Are people just looking for instant gratification? I for one do not want to see my favorite channels move behind some kind of pay wall. The cost of living is high enough as it is. I would love to hear from others on this dilemma. Cheers.

Have you tried algorithm jiu jitsu? You may have already tried this, but if people respond to videos about sharpness, title your next video something along the lines of, “This photography skill is even more important than sharpness…” Manipulate the algorithm to your own purposes.

Unfortunately, photographic history and the work of other photographers are not a priority for most people who take photographs. I think this is in part because of a disconnect about what "photography" can be, is, is not, etc.. The problem is that creators like yourself are largely reliant on their income from KZbin, which is reliant on viewership.

People don't care because it is not important. It is a sad truth but if you want to take photographs there is nothing in that desire that evokes history lessons

To be fair, I supported you on Patreon but you neglected the platform completely. If you are going to get financial support you need a business model and a method to collect. You had a collection method, but you didn’t do anything to really build it up, at least that I could see. I love your content, your approach, but I think you have to make up your mind to pick a method (patreon, paid subscriptions on KZbin, etc.) and commit to it.

There are definitely people searching for the non-gear, non-how to videos. I know that because I’m one of them. But it’s difficult to find such channels because what do you use as search terms? It’s like searching through a dense forest. You’ve sold me multiple photo books. Most recently, this very video sold me one by Obie Oberholzer. I wonder if I’m the only one you sell books to? I doubt it. Still seems like an obvious way to help fund what you are doing would be to use Amazon affiliate links to sell the books. Just drop a link in the description and earn commissions. Easy to do too. And I’d be quite happy to buy from your affiliate links thereby sending you some money every time. The other thing I wonder about is why people like you, Scott, Sean Tucker, and others (myself when I finally get mine off the ground!) don’t cross promote one another. Seems like a natural way to get more views on your videos. You’re all trying to appeal to an audience that is not obsessed with gear and that is not made up of beginners seeking how-to videos. Most photographers will never advance beyond being beginners because they don’t have the drive and the willingness to put in the work, so all of you are appealing to a minority of photographers. But there should be enough out there to keep you going. If only we could find people like you. And all of us supporting one another seems like a way to make that happen. It’s something I plan on doing once I do get my channel off the ground in any case. But it seems like everybody doing it could help everybody, you know? That said . . . I’m off to checkout your photo community. Sounds like something worth checking out. :-)

If my life was as interesting as this comment, I wouldn't be sitting on KZbin right now😛
