The piano has been drinking My neck tie is asleep And the combo went back to New York The jukebox has to take a leak And the carpet needs a haircut And the spotlight looks like a prison break Cause the telephone is out of cigarettes And the balcony is on the make And the piano has been drinking The piano has been drinking And the menus are all freezing And the lightman's blind in one eye And he can't see out of the other And the piano tuner's got a hearing aid And showed up with his mother And the piano has been drinking The piano has been drinking Cause the bouncer is a Sumo wrestler Cream-puff casper milquetoast And the owner is a mental midget with the I.Q. of a fencepost Cause the piano has been drinking The piano has been drinking And you can't find your waitress With a Geiger counter And she hates you and your friends And you just can't get served Without her And the box-office is drooling And the bar stools are on fire And the newspapers were fooling And the ashtrays have retired And the piano has been drinking The piano has been drinking The piano has been drinking Not me, not me, not me, not me, not me

Anybody else bothered by how the host asked him to play the tune? "The piano has been drunk. Do that one for me." I wonder if that's why Tom played it so differently from the album version.
@patriciofernandez2711 Жыл бұрын
This does seem kind of impromptu, maybe even punk?

I really believe that Tom waits feels bothered and instead of showing verbal disconformism, just thinks...i am your ape? You pay this with breaking the rythm of your show and you Will get stressed, i Will not obey to stop when u laugh and start to cough for making me stop...but meanwhile the performance Will still be amazing for music lovers
@careyhortle72459 ай бұрын
@@eye-pokerI couldn’t agree more. Not only was that sort of request in a demanding nature very common back then and particularly in these shows where the the host has an ego beyond belief. But the main reason is because it’s Tom Waits. If you knew anything about him, blues or jazz I think you would understand. If you want to get really shallow and just brush the surface, the name of the song could even be symbolic of the inconsistent nature of alcoholics and each rendition is an interpretation of the different drunk pianos this tune has been performed on - because the piano has been drinking - not me
