OMG.. Really!? Seems feasible, though the shovel IS useful as specified in THIS video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/boHWd3mZYrpsZpI).. Hopefully that in combination of this video you've commented on.

Actually a wooden bat is even better, one hit to barrels and 2 to boxes . you can craft it without the need of tin/ copper or iron to high are used in many other recipes in exchange of only 1 gum plank 2 spinifex resin

The wooden bat has a damage rating of 3, which is the same as iron pickaxe. (you're right about the lack of ore to make). Definitely a consideration alternative if you're lacking copper, iron or tin. Thanks for the suggestion.
