Carbon prints and gum bichromate prints are both examples of pigment processes. Rather than the metal salts typically used in the formation of photographic images, pigments and bichromated colloids are used in making these prints. A bichromated colloid is a viscous substance such as gelatin or albumen that is made light-sensitive by the addition of a bichromate. Bichromated colloids harden when exposed to light and become insoluble in water; this is the principle behind many of the non-silver-based photographic processes. Pigment processes were developed in the 1850s and offer superior permanence and control of the appearance of the final print. The resulting prints are characterized by broad tones and soft detail, sometimes resembling paintings or drawings.
This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, grant number MA-10-13-0194.

desite, demand, pride of longevity is a recent, ie, late 20th century demand. early workers were after it being easy, and long enough lasting to show around...

This led to 3color photography of the early 1900's way before three-color technicolor motion pictures or Eastman color. Don't forget that Eastman introduce two-color professional still glass plate photography in 1917,that I though w used in the publicity photo of king of jazz, book which turned out to be colorized.

This is the process that Technicolor would used calling it I.B process ,more improved after their cement process. Of course they could have thought of it in in 1920.

I always wondered how Steichen made his colour bichromate prints, are they painted afterwards or did he use a similar process to colour negatives?

If my understanding is correct, early examples of tri-color gum bichromate prints were created using a camera that split an image from one lens into three color-filtered film chambers, thereby creating negatives that corresponded to different colors. So rather than having one image comprised of multiple color layers over top one another, your end product was three unique negatives that could then be contact printed three times on the same piece of paper.

I have a question. Which of the processes, Gum bichromate or carbon print, gets more sharp images? Thnaks .

Carbon transfer printing is full scale (unlike gum) and as sharp as your negative.
