Welcome to the 6th episode of the "PILE" Trailer Rebuild Series! In this episode, we are picking up where we left off in episode 5. Since then I have installed the new tires on the freshly painted wheels! We are going to finish up welding fenders, weld in the metal mesh decking, build a custom set of safety chains and begin fabrication and welding of the tailgate ramp!
I will also provide some tips on welding thinner metal to thicker metal.
I also disclose what happened to the angle grinder in episode 5, and run into another problem tool in this episode! LOL

Looking good, I like the infill on the fenders-protects the tyres (tires) from any cargo, but also should keep some of the spray down in rain.

+Jaques Daniels Thanks! I got a chuckle on the (tyres) tires reference :) I knew what you meant mate :) see what I did there! I didnt think about the road spray, but now that you mention it, it sure will, along with mud and road grime. It's been raining here pretty steady for the past 2 weeks so it should come in useful.

I do a lot of welding at home. I have stick and mig capabilities, to include an engine drive welder. Flux core has become my new "go to" process for most things. When done properly it makes a great weld. I use it on a lot of repairs because it doesn't mind a little bit of dirt, kind of like stick. Great work!

Thank you! Flux core is a good all around process...plus you can use it outside without worrying about your coverage gas being blown away.

@@BrandonLund I did notice a couple of places where you had pin holes in the welds. I've found the most common cause for that is when you starve the puddle for wire. Usually turn down the voltage, turn up the wire speed, or slow down the travel speed.

I would set the hinges to open the tailgate flat with floor. It's easy to put heavy things or long things. Great work!

Nice job on that wheel well: I probably woulda left it open and suffered the consequences later. I was waffling on expanded metal vs wood, leaning towards wood for hauling heavier items; but you could always add 3/4" plywood as needed if you wanted to haul a small tractor or 4x4. Also, I'd switch to premium gas in the grinder.

It's been a while since I purchased a sheet but going by memory a half sheet of #9 a couple years ago was just over a 100 bucks.

I don't have any idea but your local welding supply store is always a good source to pass on good metal suppliers. 😉
