A new game requires new design principles. Or, more specifically, I finally write down some of the design goals that I want for my game. The three pillars represents the three design goals for Trollskóg.... Well... There's actually six design goals, and therefore six pillars. It makes much more sense when you watch the video.
And don't forget to check out my Vertical Slice Edition of my game Explorers RPG on itch.io: wyverns-lair.i.... And leave a follow if you want to keep tabs on my work.

This is good stuff. I haven't watched all your episodes but I am learning a lot of whatever I can get to watch. I have already finished my first TTRPG and it has been playtested extensively with a wide range of people over the past year and I am happy to where it is right now. I don't want to sound like a pioneer in the industry. I used (PBTA) sources to come up with my game and the design philosophy behind PBTA is clear and simple.

That's amazing 😁 congrats on making a game! It's an accomplishment not many people have managed. And even if it's not a pioneering game, you should be proud. Because you achieved your goal through a lot of effort😎

@Simply Wyvern Thank you, your design process is definitely more stylish and fun to watch. I like how you lay out your goals which is probably the most essential part in the design.

Thank you😊 I like to be more stylish, but it's definitely a lot slower than just sitting down and just make a game🤣

Ironsworn has a few mechanics that simplify the resource, community and ally interaction and focuses so much more on noncombat elements than with combat. In fact, you can distill combat down to a single roll, narrated as a montage. It's pretty neat. While the game is designed solo ground up, it is very playable as a group game with a GM or as a Cooperative adventure.

Thanks! I've looked at the rules for ironsworn, and I really like a lot of elements of it. Like that you can zoom in and out to spit encounters into more or fewer actions, and the momentum mechanic. I tried to play it solo, but I think I'm really bad at solo games😅

In 2009 I started my own game. I’d love to tell you I’m close to being done … the joy it has brought me however is immeasurable.

That's awesome to hear 😁 it's the same I feel. I want to finish my game of course, but I'd rather have fun than be finished

New intro is neat. I also have three pillars for my game. Accessibility, since I despise the far too common ableism in the hobby space. Expression, which is similar to your first exploration pillar about creating depth in characters and delving into meaningful play that results in catharsis. Intensity, my third pillar is basically what you put into the hands of the GM with your tension, but my game doesn't need a GM to be played and so I had to put the need for pacing and creation of memorable moments in the game directly into the design.

Those are some solid pillars. I really like that you put accessibility front and center. It's gutsy and something that the RPG hobby needs. I remember when you told me in an earlier video, and it has stuck with me. I actually checked out @HatchlingDM recently. From what I've gathered, they made a game where you learn sign language while playing the game. Maybe something to take inspiration from?

Awesome, new rpg creation vids! When I saw your resolution mechanics for your explorer's game like a year ago, it got me obsessed with making my own version of those mechanics. So much time fussing with it...that's your faul! Ha. I've been thinking about the magic system too and I really liked your idea of components as a dice code. I've been trying to incorporate it into my own free form magic system but still messing with it.

Thank you! I'm so glad you like it😊 I've used the dice mechanic somewhat, but the balancing is to figure out which stats/skills to make. I don't want some stats to be dump stats. I'm kinda still stuck on my magic system, so if you have any ideas on making some free form version, please share😅

@@simplywyvern I've been rethinking my magic system a bit..needs tweeking to make it work without being tedious. Basically put pieces together like a magical formula or puzzle. My first variation goes like this... Magical source + an art/Effect + form = result. Spend power points to raise the Power levels to boost the result. Your mechanics inspired variation ... An Affinity + an Art + a form = an effect No power levels but components upgrade the effects dice code. You need to know the Magic source (or magic sphere) in order to manipulate the energies of that sphere, and you need to have the right Affinity talent (talents are gained at chargen and advancement) in order to create any of the Arts (effects) under any Affinity. Sounds a tad complex but it's easy to see on paper. Example... let's say I have a druid. Druid traditions start out with access to The Primal Sphere (primal source). The primal affinities are plant, beast, spirit. I choose beast for my Affinity. Beast Affinity gives me instant access to all of the arts (or effects ) under it. Such as communion, aspect of the beast, calling (summoning) , commanding, sensing... whatever you and the GM thinks fits. So arts are not set in stone. They just provide some type of direction or assistance for players to create their own effects within some constraints.

I came up with a few sources or spheres of magic all with several Affinity talents and arts. Other examples of sources and affinities : Abyssal (demonic, blood, curse, shadow), Radiant (truth, blessing, ward, life), Law (gravity, magnetic, energy ), Chaos (potentiality, destruction, entropy), Elementalism (water, fire, earth, air)...etc.
@simplywyvern

That sounded complex until you showed the example 😎 That's a pretty neat system. I really like those types of "combine words to make spells" magic. And I like that you can decide yourself what affinities you have. How do you solve the "power level" of a spell. Say if I want to summon a beast. Does the die specify how big of a beast I summon?
@junglejoe40
@junglejoe40 2 жыл бұрын
@@simplywyvern I'm still working on the whole power level. The base power dice is your magic skill + component dice code ...or magic skill + power points... not sure yet. My first game, there are 0 - 4 power levels. Each power level increase the effects dice by 1 rank. Level 0 = 1d4 Level 1 = 1d6 Level 2 = 1d8 Level 3 = 1d10 Level 4 = 1d12 Roll the effects dice to get how powerful the effect is. But you could also just say the power level is the level of beast you can summon or command, no effects dice needed. I use the effects dice for the strength of damage or the threshold baddies need to break your entangle spell.
