This Musicmaster era is some of the best sounds in the world. When he switched to some custom colorful guitar the sound has gone.

It's a Cyclone, not a Musicmaster. But yea, I agree. Especially in the case of Manabe. Once he moved onto humbuckers the sound just go too compressed. I'm sure they used all sorts of stuff in the studio but I always equate The Pillows' golden era with single coils.
