Dhoni is crucial for 2 things. Post his arrival he taught India how to finish games in ODIs. 90s fans are used to seeing matches where India could have closed out matches by batting 50 overs but collapsed by 40-45 overs. Another is fitness. People think its Virat. But actually its Dhoni under whom Virat himself got fit. Dhoni taught the power of fitness helps in converting singles to doubles. 2011 was destined to happen because of this reason, and the big big reason was what Harsha said, we had batters who could ball and give that extra overs with wickets! I still remember that 2011 quarter final against australia When yuvi and raina came together at the end, it was a tense situation the required run rate, back then, in the pre ipl madness era, seemed a lot when it actually wasn't India probably needed 60/70, but it was against lee and co, defending world conquerors one perfect yorker landed, and possibly the match would be over born in 96, I honestly didn't have much expectations from the team, but ganguly's revolutionary 11, who brought back trust and loyalty into the fans, deserved it winning it this time around would be way more challenging. But given the batting unit performs, intending to dominate, escaping a few potential dews, I think they can go the distance australia and the england game in the group are a must win On the night of iconic 2nd april, 2011, we went out for a casual walk nearby. And the generally empty streets were suddenly seeing a lot of people cricket is the invisible religion in india. Hopefully it never gets reduced to only the ipl.
