Am an avid fan of the 16 size American Railroad grade pockets watches… and yes… for their day, they were among the best watches going. Not only in design and engineering but for advances in metallurgy. They were bound by strict set of regulations and had stringent time keeping standards, needed to be rugged as well as easily maintained and adjusted for up to 6 positions. These were made in the USA from the beginning of the 20th Century until the 1960s when Hamilton was bought by what is now Swatch Group. Today all Hamilton watches use the Swiss ETA movements. I am happy to own a couple Walthams, Illinois and Hamiltons and the youngest was made in 1959 and the oldest in 1914 and it still runs well over 100 years on.

As I watch this I'm holding my grandfather's Hamilton 992, another great railroad-grade watch, still ticking away after nearly a century. Also contemplating that the last real Hamilton watch was the LED Pulsar made in Lancaster in the 70s. That was also a very high quality product, put out of business by much cheaper junk. I have one of those on the desk, and it's still going strong too.

Very nice ASMR video! Here are some tips to improve your video even further. Lighting...many shots during the reassembly were dark over the parts of the watch where seeing the interaction between the parts is important look between 16:30-23:10 for improvement. Framing the shot...many of your shots during this time also had the main action out of frame. Testing...next time, use 3 focus shots for the timegraph numbers for reference in the beginning before disassembly (if the watch is running) so we can see where you started, immediately after cleaning and reassembly so that we can see how much a simple cleaning improves the operation and/or accuracy of the movement, and then after all your adjustments so we can see which adjustments improve the accuracy the most, if at all possible. Next, was that a new crystal or did you clean and buff the original one? Please show that process, too. Lastly, I would suggest using music throughout the video with links to the artists, (since you do no narration--nice musical selections, by the way) and adding text scripts for background on the watch and movement (some history on Hamilton would be good) or when you're using lubricants or glues (like when you glued the crystal back on using a UV glue--what was that stuff? And was that petroleum jelly you were using to lubricate the case bezel?). Some simple text stating what was being used would be helpful, esp. during those times where you are doing something tedious, like putting the watch parts into the baskets for cleaning. That's a perfect time for some text about the cleaning products being used or the movement mechanics or history as related to the exploded view. Anyway, you're off to a great start with your video because I did watch the whole thing, but I'm giving these few suggestions which could both improve your video and differentiate you from other ASMR watch repair videos. Good luck and thanks again. I'll keep an eye out.

That crystal looks like an acrylic replacement. I also saw a neat technique for removing the second hand. It requires the perriferal screws holding the dial legs and then the face is pried-up from the edges. Lowers the risk of snapping the second pivot. Eh....and I am not much of a fan of just tripping the click to let down the mainspring. Black steel mainsprings don't handle stress very well...Just saying.....

It’s called a “service” usually older mechanical watches will need service at regular intervals like a car needs an oil change. It involves complete disassembly of the watch (technical term is actually “movement” ), cleaning it, then reassembling it and lubricating the jewels, and any metal-on-metal components, and replacing of any parts. It also entails tuning the watch so that it runs properly to minimize gain or loss of time. Railroad grade watches had some very strict time keeping rules and specifications, not only in how accurate the watch had to perform (no more than a +-30 seconds a week for RR watches) but also certain function and designs, such as lever set (the little lever he pulls out to set the hands) but also to perform in different positions and be calibrated to operate in different temperature ranges and perform as accurately when at peak winding or lowest winding. I hope this helps explain what he did.

I'm absolutely not familiar with american watches, so please don't offense by the following question: This is the PINNACLE of AMERICAN MADE Watches? A watch that has an off-axis dial and -hand for seconds as only "complication"? No calendar, moon cicle, chrono-function or others? I don't think that this watch blames Rolex. Btw: I'm not a big fan of Rolex. I see the pinnacle of swiss watches in Patek Philippe or brands like Vacheron Constantine or Jäger Le-Coultre. Too sad, they're all way too expensive for me.)

@@TimelyMatter the point is due to the American WW industry's refusal to engineer common sense to exquisite horological masterpieces, they failed to put many inexpensive Swiss, Japanese, et al manufactures to shame..... MUCH LESS put a fine Rolex to shame. When the American manufacturers finally opted for common ense, many deferred to branding swiss watches with their own names.re Easy enough to revise design to facilitate the addition of inca bloc. I have a scarce Waltham PW with a AS mvt signed Baume Mercier. Such a sad shame none of the big guys simply made slight revisions.

For the century following the American Civil War, American watchmaking did indeed produce some of the finest mass-produced watches in the world. Numerous US watch manufacturers turned out millions of timepieces each year during those decades and shipped them far and wide, dwarfing what any other country (or in many cases what the combination of several other countries) were producing. As far back as the late-1800s they were producing massive quantities of watches with consistent quality while the Swiss and others were still farming out batches of parts to be produced by independent craftsmen in private workshops. As a result, American-made watches were easier and cheaper to both assemble and repair because parts were far more consistent, having all been produced in a single factory instead of literally all over the countryside. American watch manufacturers were credited with perfecting the art and science of "mass production" - not to be confused with "assembly line production", which was actually pioneered by the beer brewing and bottling industry - NOT by Henry Ford!. The concept of mass production was pioneered by the arms industry during the Civil War. The ability to produce identical parts by machine on a mass scale that required no custom-fitting in order to assemble a fine mechanism of consistently high quality by the hundreds and thousands was envied the world over. The Hamilton 992B from this video was produced in 1951, which represents the closing decades of that era of American watchmaking. While the "quartz crisis" may have been the final nail in the coffin of watch manufacturing in the US, by that time our industry had already taken the lessons learned from mass watch production and several other industries and moved on.

@csachevauxsansabri2612 3 ай бұрын
I disagree. Here is the counterpart to your watch from Rolex. Yes it's not as blingie inside but once you look at the details, you quickley understand you are at an other level of sophistication . Blued hands even though the presenter thinks thees are new once. Obviously new from Rolex. Look at the details. A blued hairspring in the rolex. The qualety of parts been used and Rolex didn't even make mouvments in-house yet. You can see the amount of qualety Rolex expected from there partners. To say that Hamilton was better then Rolex, probably becaus Rolex is a young brand in relation to Hamilton and at the time all the best watches were made in the USA in contrast to today's made in Switzerland. You need to look at it this way, Hamilton had to compete with Rolex 30 years after its creation just before the 1st World War. Look at who will win in the years during and after the war and who is number one today, having to fight for its spot on the top. How do you fight? You get more and more fancy as you go along. That is what is happening today. Back then Rolex was relatively cheep. At the beginning a Rolex cost a months werth of salary and now? 10 years and more of salary.. its in fact so blown out of proportion that I thing soon the bubble will burst and prices are going to come down. Just like it had to for Hamilton in order to survive. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gF6slntqg9uDgLssi=A858WCRUjDs8o88A
