I keep seeing loads of comments about how the prime 4 is better but I think most people are missing the biggest positive of these decks. They’re perfect for DJ’s who want to be club/rave ready without spending £5.5k on Nexus CDJ’s and Mixer. It’s literally a DJM900 mixer and 2 CDJ’s for a third of the price almost. Learn to play on this and you can DJ on club standard equipment anywhere... nobody uses Denon!

I recently played a park party in Oakland that had a Prime 4 on stage to play on. Yeah it's cheaper than an XZ, yeah you can play a set on it, but you really get what you pay for. The Prime 4 feels like a cheap plastic toy and acts like one as well.

It's the perfect setup for me. I'm a CDJ USB DJ and am most comfortable with the NXS2 setup, but don't want to spend that much for a full setup at home. I've had XDJ 700s, so if I get the XDJ-XZ I'll just use my 700s to create a 4 deck system. This is as close as i'll get to a NXS2 setup at home for now. I'm so happy!!!

Please note at 22:45 the double tap shift to access decks 3 and 4 in HID mode isn't a feature available until early 2020. To access these decks, press SHORTCUT, you can then change the DECK by press the DECK SELECT button in the centre display. (Note: you may not be able to see these buttons/selection when using USB key playback)

Me personally I could careless about not using 4 channels with the usb port I only use 2 channels anyway. I'm just happy that it has the Nexus jog wheels and you don't need a laptop. I'm sold!

For me this unit is good. I still play vinyl so 2 digital channels and 2 phono works for me. That said I absolutely cannot believe they're still using that jittery POS 15fps 7" display with the plastic cover. It seems positively ancient now-a-days when 60fps phones are the small format displays everyone uses every day.

The best part about this machine is that it brings all the features of a nexus 900 mixxer and it has the jogwheels of a 3000. It may not do everything that 2x 3000s and a 900 will do but its only a fraction of the price. You really can't complain. If you want more, pay for more but you certainly get a good bang for your buck. Considering all skills are directly transferable over to the full individual setup

Great review! Have had this unit for a couple of weeks and love it... well most of it. Pioneer needs to humbly acknowledge the MISTAKE not having 4 USB channel ability on launch and correct it fast. I can't imagine this is more than a 'simple' firmware update. Unless they're knowingly holding out for something down the road, which would be pretty shady and make this unit half-ass considering it should absolutely be able to do it all looking at the competition. PIONEER - please email us an update next month and make this thing do what it should do. Then i'd give it 10/10!

I would never get into Denom unless you literally plan on staying like a bedroom or wedding DJ. Pioneer is the industry standard in every club. Show up with your usb and play.

I think its fantastic. I started back in the dj600 days. The quality of sound and effects , screens and ability to play whatever you want is great. Yeah, I wish you could play full stand alone with all 4 decks usb but I never needed more than 2 tables and an effects processor anyway. When I do it, I'd do it for fun and I just added tables as needed.

What the hell? Does this refer just to USB? So if you want 4 x USB channels you need to connect a laptop? But if you connect 2 x external multiplayer decks then you can standalone USB x 4, right? So you mean you found that you couldn't use the 4 channels, not the 4 decks, as there are only 2 decks, unless you connected 2 more external.

@@spiritlevelstudios yes basically. USB = 2 channels standalone unless cdj/turntable attached to channel 3 and 4. If you don’t own any cdjs/turntables then you need to connect a laptop for channel 3 and 4 on the xz

i agree, owned the sc5000 primes for a bit and returned them. great hardware with currently too many issues. and on top of that, theres just nothing that feels right like pioneer cdjs. will prob be holding onto my nexus2's for a good long while. hoping denon gets their shit together though because they're def in the right direction

Thanks Crossfader for you review. I’m not a pioneer controller fanboi, but I did wanted to know how Pioneer Dj was going to respond to the Denon dj units. Pioneer is doing the Apple thing - that is making the same type products, little changes, and state OUR CULT WILL BUY ANYTHING WE SALE!!! Can you imagine what was said in the corporate meeting when they decided to make this unit. I bet you there was one person in the meeting saying “All pioneer dj units screens are dated, can we have a better resolution. Or “our users keep asking for a 4 channels standalone, can we create that?” Or “can we change the look just a bit because it looks like our old dj units?” The big boss said “HELL NAH, SIT YOU ASS DOWN!!! Lol But on a real note all this companies do this same place thing(coming up short and not giving us what we want), it is not only Pioneer Dj.

Yet again - noting special for a lot of money. Pioneer are masters at this game. I think the only two Pioneer controllers that used to make sense upon release are DDJ-SX and DDJ-1000. I disagree, this is a perfect setup for a club that has different DJs playing that uses different options. One may prefer straight USB, others may use Rekordbox on a computer, and others may use Serato - this gives a plug and play option for essentially everyone to just come in and play without having them bring their own equipment in

1:15 The problem with this for CLUB applications is that it's not modular. If the right jog wheel breaks, for example, you can't just hot swap in another CDJ. You have to send the whole unit back for repairs. Thus, maintenance for these could be a nightmare imo.

This is the machine I was waiting for! Yes, dual layer decks would be better but you can use four decks by connecting a laptop and you don’t have to have the screen up. While the Prime 4 is better in many regards, I really want kit that mirrors the NEXUS2 setup so I can swap seamlessly from a home set-up to a NEXUS2 setup in a club and this is that machine. It also can be plugged straight into a PA for a mobile setup for parties. Oh, and let’s not forget the full-size job-wheels; the ones on the Prime4 are pitifully small... Also, while this is expensive, it’s actually less than a DJM900NXS2 and has 95% of the features plus two quality decks.

Also, you get to use Rekordbox for music management rather than the lamentable Engine Prime. Denon may have nailed the hardware but their software is borderline trash and the rekordbox integration is clunky. Gimme Rekordbox and a NEXUS2 layout any day of the week, I can fudge decks 3 and 4 with a laptop if needs be.

I've never touched a controller, I've always had CDJ's and a separate mixer (Non Pioneer) but I wanted to move forward but I didn't want to use a laptop, I wanted a stand alone system. I also have a pair of PLX1000's which, I think, would be an amazing addition. I've put a deposit down yesterday as there doesn't seem to be any in the country so I will have to wait for the next shipment, I've been been told that's end of May, beginning of June. Great review many thanks. Very informative and detailed, just the way it should be. So many haters here. Not quite sure why. As a start, not many DJs actually do something worthwhile listening to with more than 2 decks anyway. It's a fact!!! Oh the egos will be offended. Sorry about that... For me 2 usb channels only is not a deal breaker, more of a "would be nice to have 4 type thing". This is a very nice way of owning two CDJ 2000 NX2 and a DJM900 NX2 without the capital outlay needed to buy the separate units. If one can't see that, perhaps one is not in the business of playing with truly standard pro dj gear... It is an appealing product in my personal view. Pioneer has been in the game of DJ gear for many years, they know what they are doing. I currently own a DDJ 1000 (great controller who I use on a regular basis when hired with my own equipment) and I will be seriously considering a swap for one of these.

I just managed to find one still in stock. Great controller, mixing 2 decks is mostly all I need If I plan to use more I'll plug my laptop in..or add a vinyl deck or two (crazy how hard that is). Looks incredible feels incredible and plays incredible. As you say it basically mimics the club standard but is over 1k less lol. Very happy with my purchase. If pioneer brings out something that is 4 in 1 and a better touch screan with say beat port link streamed in to it then i'd think about upgrading until that point I'm more than happy with this. Even if I loose £500/£1000 over 12/18 months I will have had my moneys worth! it's the same as having a car in my eyes, they loose value new models come out.. but for the time you have them nice and new they are amazing. Well that's my view anyway..

I've just purchased one of these units (awaiting delivery) so this review has been very helpful indeed. I agree that the ability to use a single USB stick across all 4 decks is disappointing, although, that said, I already had prepared to use my laptop with Rekordbox as I like the screen size, layout and overall GUI better than the XDJ-XZ GUI.

That helix effect almost sounds simular to the spiral effect but with much more faster timing control alone with the pitch going up or down depending on the beat fx being added or cutting on time.

This will be a huge hit on exactly the groups of users you described. I’m interested in dj software control as well. Its bizarre that to swap layers you have to double tap the shift button. The shift button is very heavily used, the device is so big that they should have put a dedicated deck swap button.

Hi - I currently have a nxs2 set up / DJM900nxs2 mixer and was wanting a 3rd cdj (been holding off for th nx3 to be released). This product looks like a cheaper option to get 4cdj for less the price than a new cdj. Would you advice selling off my mixer & purchasing this unit or just go down the route of a new cdj. I only bedroom dj but like top quality equipment to mix on. cheers

@@LyK0sa Standalone refers to not needing a laptop, as far as I understand it. So Hibit Sounds is correct. It's 4 channels, 2 decks. You can add another 2 decks to the spare channels to keep it standalone, or you can add a lappy and not standalone anymore.

Why is it necessary to press the Cue button in the Master section in order to hear the Master in the Headphones section? Seems to me I should just be able to rotate the dial in the Headphones section without needing to press a button, but maybe I'm missing something.

For fast live mashups like James Hype is practiciing you need 4 real Decks, so stop shaming. Most of the DJs won't use double decks, because the switch makes one Deck unusable (only playing in background) in addition of that, where should these 4 Channels visualized on this Controller? Too small/less displays. For 2k bucks you get an in sane product for most of gigs. If you need more: extend the system by two CDJ 1000s.

I had the DDJ-RZ and upgrade to this unit, the thing I really miss is the stop on the Hotcue. So you can set the hotcue when release it, it jumpsback and stops playing. (like the standard cue works). The rest is great! Iam very happy with it!

Thanks for the review. Yes I agree with the rest in the comments. Why would make a stand alone with 2 decks working? You’ll carry 2 channels with you that can’t work in stand alone mode. But be honest. I dj a lot. From big to small events. Playing on Pioneer set-ups or DVS Serato with the Rane 72. But I think this XZ is gonna work for most of the dj’s. 2 channels will be used for music and 3 and/or 4 can be used for a live instrument or other audio source. If you need channel 3 to have a song ready than your not fast enough or have messy crates. I can’t imagine that most dj’s continuously mix 3 or 4 tracks at the same time. For the beginner dj I advice something with 4 decks WORKiNG so it gives you more time to prepare your songs and mixes. What i do like to see in the next update (XZ2) is a bigger screen and a layer function for the decks.

Yeah very valid points here! I think it's a missed opportunity however most DJ's don't really need 4 decks for mixing. The other 2 channels can be very useful for lots of different situations.

Layering really depends on the style of DJ you are. If you are a club / festival dj it's more normal to at least use 3 decks instead of 2. Techno/dnb/dubstep sets get pretty boring when you just play 2 decks.

They should of just updated the screen to a 11 or 13 inch , 1440p OLED multi touch screen. So it can fit all 4 channels on the screen. The also need to update the layout of the waveforms. That small little screen is already out dated.

I'm on to Pioneer. Look back at every controller they release and you'll see it too. They know exactly what DJs want, but somehow leave out HUGE AND IMPORTANT OR INDUSTRY STANDARD features on these controllers. Why? because these things are CASH COWS for them. They know people will run out and buy these as soon as they come out (regardless of what it's missing), then the "2" version comes out with 1 or 2 more features (that should have been on the 1st one) but people will run out and "upgrade". Then the "3" version comes out and they will run out and buy that to upgrade again, and again, and again, and again........

They are very business minded and yes it's these intentional holdouts that drive me nuts. It's like when the first iPhone was released without the basic function of being able to send MMS 🤦‍♂️. In the meantime Denon is releasing extra software and hardware capabilities without even announcing it. Their team is listening to our feedback and updating the CURRENT players with functionality that would cover three generations of Pioneer gear. I think competition is healthy, but when a company like Pioneer doesn't release a product that is truly the best it can be just to release the "updated" version a few months later.... Then it's that practice that would make me like to see them suffer in sales and see the companies that are releasing the best products they can without compromise rise to the top

The existence of the RX2 makes this kind of pointless since they do almost the same thing. The new jog wheels are cool and all but USB DJs are the target audience here and that bump in price isn't worth it, especially if it won't let you use 4 channels. I won't even mention the prime 4, it might get embarrassing for Pioneer

this is it.. now we can have real 4 deck pioneer setup for much less (xdj-xz+2xdj1000mk2 vs djm900nxs2+2xdj1000mk2) i dont really understand people mentioning this isn't 4 deck all in one and comparing with cheap prime 4. this gives you option to hook up xdj/cdj/djs to 3&4th channels so potentially you can build complete 4 deck pionneer setup way much cheaper than before. thats a huge gift from pioneer which they have never done before. hey guys even prime 4 isn't a real 4 deck, its apparently 2 real decks with 2 virtual decks, which you couldn't control a&c, b&d decks at once.

Also you mentioned the memory option for cue points and loops. Can you go through for example the loop list that you can make in serato with out touching the laptop? Loop 1 5mins 27secs in on/off Loop 2 you get the jist

Give me a 2 deck standalone with on board track analysis and full size mechanical jogs and I'll be a very happy man. Denon's gear is looking good, but for some reason the prime 4 doesn't appeal to me. The prime 2 is let down by it's lack of line/phono inputs, the prime go looks really cool but I'd prefer something bigger for serious use and £900 is a lot to spend on a toy. I'd adopt an Sc6000 setup in a heartbeat, but unfortunately I don't have £3500 burning a hole in my pocket.

I'm curious if you have ever used a P4. I have DJed for the past 17 years and owned 10's of thousands of dollars in Denon and Pioneer equipment including the flagships and have always thought that the CDJs felt like toys compared to Denon's equipment. Especially when comparing a Nexus2 to the P4. if you then get into features (even though these are not in the same class) then you quickly realize the P4 has almost literally twice the functionality and customization options within the software and hardware. Engine is honestly not far off from Rekordbox and it doesn't matter since THE DENON READS REKORDBOX natively cue points n all It's easy to get heated about something without trying it and giving it a fair chance. I just sold my XDJA and Nexus lineup because I was so happy with this one controller so I might have a confirmation bias but I owned and used that $8k dollars of gear for years before coming to this conclusion

I bought this unit and it's a big change for me. I came from DVS on an S9 and I do quite a bit of scratching, so I'm used to 12" decks and visually seeing which deck is playing simply by looking at the turntables. Now that I bought it, I realize what I really want is mechanical, probably something similar to the Denon SC6000M, but I don't want to pay $1700 apiece for those, although I think it would be great to have 2 SC6000M's to use with my S9. Long story short: scratch DJ's - if you're making the switch from DVS to "CDJ" beware that these jogwheels are not as accurate as DVS. It's close enough, but leaves something to be desired. Also, my unit shipped with a bad headphone port, so I had to ship it back for a new one...

I was also quite surprised at the poor build quality of the jog wheels. Maybe you CDJ guys are used to it, but I expected something that didn't feel like cheap plastic. It also makes a lot of noise when it spins. I prefer Technics 1200 build quality and zero noise...

I think it's a great upgrade to the rx2 and the addition of 2 other channels is great. Of course 4 channels would be nice standalone but then buy the Denon Prime 4. I believe there will be people who will have a use of this.

Also the screen is too small for 2019, especially when you have such strong competition from Denon Prime 4. Buying DDJ 1000 will save you almost half the money, will give you 99% of the features of XDJ-XZ, will allow you to use the all 4 channels, and you will have much bigger display of your laptop.

Thanks for the great video. One question , so are the effects on board digital effects like on a DJM mixer? One thing I dislike about digital Rekordbox DJing is that the FXs lack some quality and fullness compared to those on a DJM mixer for example.

@max Mo you are correct. The effects feel very shallow to me... They always have for me whether practicing a set in My home studio or going thru the system at a SuperClub in Houston, TX. I have used plug ins like the Mashcine Studio by NATIVE Instruments to do my live effects.... But I am setup with Serato and all of my DJ Software on kne Mac book.... And i have to run these plug ins off of another Mac book and it takes some time to set up and test everything.... But I recommend other plug ins to fi d what works to optimize live Play. That's just the way I rock. This system is a great one for clubs

I have the DDJ 1000, love it. I want a stand alone but this seems not much better for the money. if pioneer would just keep the big jogs, add wifi and a bigger screen with an internal SSD, cooler effects like the prime has, then I'm sold. People keep on about Pioneer being the club standard. But i dont think thats the case anymore. Even Ministry of Sound in the UK now has Denon SC5000's in the Box. Their main room. Even my local club here in Reading has a Prime4 now. So if the owners are buying this kit the visiting DJ's must be requesting it causing the demand for it to be installed.
