Nice unit. I really like the way you present these, well done. On a technical note, these do not use flash, but rather a large low voltage capacitor to store the setting in RAM. The 0.22F cyan one at 7:36 is the one in this unit. Note Farad, not microfarads!

Right. I just meant it's not on a spinning disc or something... lol That's a LOT of farads. Keep the fingers away. :)

The memory is retained via a super capacitor, if you look near the Toshiba CPU on the left, you’ll see it, the only green electrolytic cap on the board. Fairly common way of keeping a few bits alive back then. Surprised it’s still good after all these years. Speaks to the quality of components used.

How long can something like that hold on to memory, usually?

Great video - One thing I noticed was that you were getting stereo signals on even integer frequencies (96.00 and 102.00, IIRC). In the USA, all commercial FM stations broadcast on odd-value tenths - .1, .3, .5, .7, and .9. As a somewhat OCD person, this was driving me nuts. I'd bet there's a adjustment pot on that easily-navigable board for adjusting that. I've never done it, I'm only guessing. At any rate, great video. Looking forward to what you have coming up next. Cheers.

Yeah, I noticed that too... I was able to find the service manual for the 950 which is exactly the same and, if I'm not mistaken, there is actually a process to adjust that but I need a signal generator or oscilloscope. I want to fix it because it was bugging me too. Hopefully I'll get my hands on oscilloscope from one of the estate sales we go to. But thank you. I appreciate it.

Most of Pioneer's mid to late 80's equipment are often overlooked and can be acquired for very little. Their early 80's stereos? Not so much...

That's a fact... estate sales have certainly taught me that. I don't want to admit how much I paid for the other two Pioneer components I bought...

Really? I have a midrange blue line system from 1981 and it sounds awesome. I actually have it hooked up as a second system on my main speakers!

Judging by the controls on the (matching) amp, I would suggest this system is designed for karaoke!

I actually like that Green, have an Pioneer Audio Timer from that era. Gets Power from 1 of the capacitors, Pioneer did that on most.

Thank you. I think the production is my second favorite part of the process (after shopping for stereo stuff lol)!

@@AudioThriftJust noticed, now that is a score what looks to be a Black face Pioneer SX780. Yes, finding that buy is a wonderful feeling. Wish I could do that camera stuff, turn into a Zombie once I see the light and lens. You do a pretty good job with your acting and trust me I rarely pay this compliment.

@robertdavis5714 Well thank you. I'll tell you my secret; a teleprompter and a shot of tequila... plus rehearsing it a few times so I get the cadence right. You should see the multitude of bad takes. They're horrible. :P
