Yeah, that's my take. It's painful watching them now --- especially the litany of late blown leads. But, hey, we've been luckier than most hockey fans may ever be in their lifetime: 3 rings in a 10-year period.

I keep saying this. Sid, Malkin, and Letang won us three cups. Sid is still playing at a high level, and he wants Malkin and Letang around. If they want to be around and finish their careers as Pens and not have to worry about all the outside stuff that comes with going to a new franchise like moving your family and stuff, they've earned it. That run of back to back cups was the best time of my sports fan life, and I'm all for letting these guys dictate their own terms to finish things up. If they want to leave, they can request a trade. If they want to stay, let's watch em ride off into the sunset. They'll all be in the HoF and in the rafters with Lemieux, Jagr, and Briere one day.

With the Erik Karlsson trade, they’re already committed to going the way of Detroit. Selling isn’t an option with their first round pick gone, and even if it’s within the protected range this year, it becomes unprotected in next year’s draft.

Resigning LeTang and Geno did that. It looked to me like mercy contracts for their loyalty to the team. Geno hasn't done jack for three years. LeTang regularly gets his doors blown off by younger, faster forwards. This just means the road back will likely be much longer than D Towns rebuild.

@@darksaga80 Spot on. The only reason I can think of why they resigned Malkin is loyalty and past glory, neither of which brings wins to the column. He has zero trade value and not much more on the ice either. The team's offense is slow, defense is hideous and goaltending is average at best. The only way they could speed up their rebuild is sell the one player they have that other teams would pile up on - Crosby.

They are going to just be bad until Crosby retires. If they offloaded the contracts of Malkin and Crosby, they would be able to not only get great return in the sale of those guys, but also get loads of cap space to play with. Instead, they'll just fail because everyone that isn't a Pens fan know that they only sell tickets when they have superstars. They've almost lost their franchise multiple times and every time they were on the verge.... well how about that.... they get all the top players the NHL can get them. Then they sell tickets...... until those players are gone....... then they almost lose their franchise.... rinse and repeat.

As a Pens, it probably would be much less frustrating if Sid and the main core were gone. But Sid is having a great season and it’s going to be down the drain as soon as possible with how the rest of the team is playing. Hextall gave Dubas an absolute tire fire and one big trade won’t fix it. Sullivan can’t be a good coach with a team this slow and giving the same stale quotes after every loss. And the biggest pouring of salt to the wound is that it’s gonna be a while until they can draft a good prospect pool, Rutherford and Hextall traded too much draft picks to “win now”. At least Dubas was smart enough to top 10 protect the pick sent to SJ for Karlsson.

Everyone complains so much about Sullivan. It reminds me of Carey Price. All the fans would dog Price and call him overrated, and every year the players would vote him best goalie in the NHL. By a wide margin. Now, Pens fans all want Sullivan gone, and I get that coaches are usually first ones to pay when things aren't going well, but anyone around hockey talks about how smart Sullivan is. The lineup definitely doesn't fit his style. I guess that could set him up for a firing. But it's doubtful that anyone could win with this lineup. But then again, things didn't look good when Sullivan got the job, either. I don't know if there's a better guy for the Pens stars than Sullivan. Clearly he's still got the touch with Sid. But maybe it's time. Hextall... what a mistake going for a lifetime Flyer. Glad Cutter Gauthier gave it back to them haha.

They were no joke. Pens deserved that series. I still believe that that Ian Cole for Derrick Brassard trade sank the Sullivan-era Pens. That was a disaster and they've won one series since. As a Pittsburgh native and huge Pens fan, I'm really trying to see the positive in this. It sucks that it seems like the run for the Pens is ending early, but honestly, it lasted longer than anyone could have imagined. Back to back cup appearances twice in the span of 9 years. Three of those runs ending in cups (and to be honest maybe could have been more if Sid hadn't been injured so much.) This team, for me personally, has done so much for me and given me so many memories. I wish I could meet Sid just to shake his hand and thank him. I’ve said it for 3 years now. EK65 needs to be bought out by a team. The only reason he broke 100 points on the sharks last year is because management told him to forget about Defense and just focus on points to get his value up. He should be a bottom 6 forward on a scoring line rather than a top 4 Dman (that’s a bit outlandish I agree I just really don’t think he brings you anything in the back end and would be more effective as a scoring winger ) Dubas was in a shit position no matter what. Stay in Toronto where Shanny won’t let you trade anything names to open up cap space. Go to Pittsburgh for money and term but suffer through at least 1 season (maybe just 2/3 of the season at this point) where Managment expects you to pull all the stops to get into the playoff one more time. Without EK65 they’d have a lot more cap space to resign guys Hate to see it for Crosby and just hockey as a whole, sorry Pitts management but you need a deep cleaning out of contracts to get back into the playoffs in my expert opinion (I’m and expert due to winning 19 Stanley cups in 25 year GM mode with easy trades and edited players so obviously everyone should listen to me)

our problem is we started trading picks instead of keeping them knowing our star players are slowing and not gonna keep putting up consistent numbers as they get older. So problem is we need to rebuild, and start trading for picks instead of trading our own picks. Like Jake Guentzel would be a good player to trade for a pick, he has 1 year left in his contract and he could lead to a possible good prospect that could rebuild our franchise

I feel like Syd doesn’t want to leave Pittsburgh and he’d like to retire there, but he also knows he’s still got it enough to win a cup if the circumstances were right, so he’s in a tight spot. Not saying he wants to be traded, but I think he’s dealing with something he’s never had to before. The idea that one day the Pens core was going to get old and they were going to be bad again.

Watching the Pens play, there are far too many times where it looks like no one, on the ice, knows where they should be, or what they should be doing...even the most seasoned veterans on the team. That's coaching, and, like you said, "the message getting stale, after all these years." Sully should have been gone, after the 19-20 season. The Pens ended up in a play-in game because they limped into the season shutdown, losing eight of their last eleven games...only winning against three of the worst teams in the league. The problems that we are seeing, now, are the same ones that we saw, then...there's just more attention on it, now, partly because of how well Sid is playing.

You Sharks fans are the worst most ungrateful fans worse than Toronto fans that man literally lead your team in points and scoring when you’re team was bottom of the league in everything and he didn’t even say a word about it either he just sucked it up and keep playing and yet you still hate on him. This how you treat every player that leaves? Lord only knows how you all reacted when Thornton and Marleau left for different teams.
@glenmiller1437
@glenmiller1437 2 ай бұрын
@@SnitchGaang0 Hmmm, not so. Thornton and Marleau are still quite beloved in SJ. No hard feeling there. It was the Sharks that choose not to resign them, so they went to other teams. Fan wise, we understood. That's the business part of the game. Same with Pavelski, who's been great for Dallas. We still love Pavs. In fact, that one is extra difficult for fans, because we basically let Pavelski go to afford Karlsson. Those were big shoes to fill. I don't know what GM Doug Wilson was thinking. Here's the problem with Karlsson, and this is hard to explain. He's a very good hockey player. And I don't know how this happens, but he DOES NOT make the other players, or the team around him, better. He seems to suck the success out of teams. He still puts up numbers for himself, but the team suffers. There's something broken about him as a component of a successful team. I think you'd have to be in the locker room to understand it better. Karlsson is getting paid over $11million a year. You don't get to say sh!t about how bad your team might be when you get paid that much. In my mind, when you get paid that much, you own part of the responsibility of making that team successful. Winning games. Because of the cap, a guy who pulls in a big salary like that know he's preventing the team from signing other players who might help them win. He needs to make up that difference, but Karlsson doesn't. He's a defensive liability. Maybe there is a way to slot him into a team and make it work, but no one has cracked that code yet. The Pens are an aging team. Sid and Geno are great players, but adding Karlsson to "fix it" for one last shot was a mistake, just like the Sharks made. Thankfully Karlsson is gone and the Sharks are trying to rebuild. The Pens just delayed their rebuild by a year. Lets see when they wise-up.

@@glenmiller1437 You forgot about the part where they let go of Burnzie to give EK a bigger role cuz he wasn’t gelling with EK lol interested to see if that will actually happen with Letang cuz he’s old and becoming a Liability on defense as well hell we even won a cup without him by signing washed FAs and slotting forwards into defensive pairings, and we also haven’t even really given EK a shot in the top defense spot either outside of the PP so it’s hard to strictly put the blame solely on him right now but I see your point a guy making 11 million should step up especially when you have other proven players to sign like Jake or in your guys Scenario Pavs. And Sid is Great yes but here’s the problem with Geno I’ll describe it for you like you kindly did for me with Karlsson the guy is still a great player but like Karlsson he drags the team down he tends to show up when he wants to in games hell half the time his stick isn’t even on the ice cuz he doesn’t wanna play defense or play the forecheck anymore and he simply doesn’t mesh well with his linemates and hasn’t since our Stanley cup run he literally kills every Winger we bring in Zucker,Archibald and every rookie we try to bring up, Reaves, Horny, and now Smith and Smith is a genuine great 25 goal a year 80 point a season guy who is even a great locker room presence hell he was an AC for Vegas but he simply doesn’t wanna be a Penguin and has been holding back all year on Malkin’s line I think it’s obvious when someone of that caliber doesn’t wanna be a part of the team cuz you aren’t winning and isn’t playing the level they are supposed to be on the line with one of your “core players” and after this has happened before in the past too with previous players on that same line that you let go of then it should be clear that it’s more of that “Core players” problem than it is these new players you keep bringing in, hell Malkin probably shouldn’t have even been resigned in the offseason he carries a hefty contract as well like Karlsson but Sid is a class act and wanted him back respect to him for that.

@@SnitchGaang0 Interesting. (Ya, I did forget about Burns.) I don't watch the Pens enough to really see what Geno does, although I have seen him be kind of "moody". Sid is always focused. Always a gamer. Its got to be tough putting together a team. Lots of intangibles, matching up players for lines, players get unhappy, it's a long season. But you're right, a guy who is high paid and supposed to be a leader can't bring negativity to a team. Even if they aren't producing, they need to raise up their teammates, somehow.

This year was a tough situation, to start with. New GM comes in with essentially a mandate to not rebuild because of the core superstars still being together, tries to hit a home run with the Karlsson deal, strikes out, and here we are... I also think sending Crosby elsewhere would be the best thing for him (and probably best for the team to just flush everything, get tons of picks and prospects, and rebuild), but does Crosby want to go elsewhere? He seems like the kind of guy who wants to retire a Pen rather than chase another ring.

At this point, forget about playoffs for this year, and try to get the best return you can on Guentzel and expiring contracts. If the team is not fixed by next year, Sidney Crosby should chase one last cup in free agency because the construction of this team has failed him.

It would be epic to see Sid play at a high level next year, get moved at the deadline for a ton of picks and prospects (hopefully to a team in the east so we drain a conference rival, but obviously not the Flyers, Rangers, Caps, etc), he goes, wins a cup, comes back to the Pens, and maybe in a year or two has one more shot at the cup, maybe with 71 and/or 58. Us in the Pittsburgh fan-base need to look at this through an Objective view. If Sid goes or stays should be entirely up to him. He can retire a penguin, or try and win another cup on another team. That should be his call to make for himself. He's earned it. This team isn't winning a cup. We shouldn't be in a win-now attitude. Last night showed just how far behind that goal they are. The Front Office needs to cut the dead weight, and I'm talking primarily about Malkin. He's been in this "Coast around and hope his wingers play defense for him" mindset for the past 7 years now. The Front Office also needs to not throw away draft picks. We only have 5 drafted players on our Roster. And 3 of them were drafted almost 20 years ago. The special teams coach needs fired, for his lack of power-play knowledge and lack of formation knowledge. If they have a trap at the blue line, it's not hard to dump and chase it out. But instead we give one guy the puck and hope he gets in. There was one game we had 8 minutes on the power-play, and only spent 40 seconds in the O-zone because of this. Mike Sullivan needs fired for the lack of locker room culture and pandering towards the players that get paid the most. It feels like Crosby is more the coach of the Penguins than it feels like Sullivan is. The Coaching staff need to realize 3 points. - "What a player gets paid isn't what they're worth on the ice." Our power-play for the peak of it's drought was "Who are the highest paid players?" - "They're on the power-play." And it took a quarter of a season without scoring for them to change it for 2 games, then go right back to it. - "Not every player is going to play cohesively with every player." Ryan Graves and Erik Karlsson are a great match on paper, but don't work together on the ice. Their mentalities of hockey vision don't align at all. PO Joseph and Kris Letang are both offensive defense-men. They cohere to each-other great. But they both have a tendency to pinch up. When one does it. It's fine, but when both do. It's a problem. Marcus Petterson is our best defenseman this year. Because he can adapt to his defensive partner so well from playing with a revolving door of players before Sullivan had confidence in his ability. This might be partially the age gap on the team. I'm sure the 35+ year olds don't celebrate the same as the 20-25 year olds do. Same goes for Leisure time, hobbies, off-ice activities. and - "Not every player is a swiss army knife that can fit every mold." Jake Guentzel isn't a net front presence. Evgeni Malkin isn't Alexander Ovechkin. Rickard Rakell isn't a sniper. Bryan Rust isn't a playmaker. Sidney Crosby shouldn't be a policeman. Kris Letang isn't the puck moving defense-man he used to be. John Ludvig is the hitting defense-man that Chad Ruwedel is expected to be. Reilly Smith isn't a Two-Way Forward. Ryan Graves isn't an offensive defense-man. The list drones on, but those are the main ones. The only players currently that plays within his own playstyles is Tristian Jarry, Alex Nedeljkovic, Lars Ellers and Noel Acarriari. And two of the four are goaltenders. Thank you for reading my thesis. I will go back to crying into my pillow now waiting for the owners to pull the trigger and say "It's time to rebuild while we still have a great captain as our leader."

Lazy back-checking, lacks basic fundamentals - like simply putting his stick blade on the ice to block a passing lane and giving the opposition easy D-to-D passes, plenty of turnovers, inattention letting the puck go into the empty net and regularly gives up penalty minutes. Sometimes I love watching him play - he can be soooo creative and he's an enigma who seems either one step ahead of the game (or one step behind). But I feel like he's really letting the Pens down in terms of discipline, effort and basic fundamentals....
