I used to pivot as I was taught. However, I and others have abandoned it because the pivot requires movement that places stress on the knee and can contribute to injuries. Your point about getting in a good position, parallel to the baseline, is excellent but an umpire can achieve this without assuming the risk of the pivot.

Do you have tips for doing the pivot mechanic on the 60ft diamond. I find it to be much harder than when I do it on the 90ft diamond. I find it toughest when it’s a ground ball that’s unclear if it’s going get out of the infield. The reduced basepath often has the BR to reach the bag before I can break in. Any tips?

Just suggest you use a better thumbnail. Your views will be low because the thumbnail isn't helpful. Lmo

The pivot was invented to evaluate umpires. It’s not actually necessary.
