I love how throughout the entire movie the camera moves with the characters and follows them but at the very end when Jason drives off it doesn't go with him. Beautiful and touching

Very good point and subtle enough that it didn't get mention in analyses of the film: Jason riding off into the distance demonstrates that he leaves westward and literally goes beyond "the place beyond the pines", Schenectady (which means "the place beyond the pines" in Mohawk), the setting of the majority of the entire script to this point - the camera remaining stationary as he rides off shows that Jason furthermore leaves the camera behind, and therefore figuratively goes beyond "The Place Beyond the Pines" the film and its script for the character, and that he is free.

I felt the same way until I saw someone else's take on it. While it's true it seems there's ambiguity about how Jason's future will end because he's in the same position Luke likely was (e.g: no father, no money as you said, a vagabond on a bike), there's a lot of visual clues to show that Jason probably won't follow completely in his father's footsteps. The first scene you see Luke ride, he's in a cage, at night, representing how small and stifled his life will be. This is in contrast to Jason, whose path is wide, open, beautiful and most importantly, full of vibrant light. I think the film means to imply that Jason's future isn't bound by Luke's tragic life, but he clearly carries the wildness that Luke embodied as well.

The sad thing about this movie is that it's so relatable to many of us. Luke and Romina were made for each other but were separated by life. If they were strong enough to fight and push for each other they could've lived a beautiful life with Jason as a complete family. We all get pushed and pulled in life....sadly we often aren't strong enough to overcome our demons.

@Ligierthegreensun
@Ligierthegreensun 4 жыл бұрын
@@tinitusrhy5138 It's heavily implied that Jason is following the same path his father did. The symbolism of the bike shows a deep connection to his father. At some point Luke talks about how he didn't have his father and "look how he ended up". While it's possible Jason doesn't follow in that path, it's very likely given that he's leaving his entire social support, having not finished school and barely money to his name, just a bike and ideas about moving westward. I don't see the ending as inspiring, it seems really tragic.

The boy picked a real good first bike. Dad would have been proud. Nothing like buying something from a man who knows how to maintain and care for things. The man who sold the boy the bike, was just like Luke in that regard. Before Luke had a family, he had his bike. It ran like a champ because he took care of it. Luke wanted to care for his family, too, after he knew he had one.

John Wils The movie starts with Luke riding into a cage, it ends with his son Jason riding off into the open road. That's a happy ending if you ask me, Luke's son was able to overcome what he never could and that's the ultimate goal for a father, for your son to be a better man than you were.

Just think about it for a sec, not only did jason discovered the truth about his dad and his dad’s past was being hidden from him. he also had to leave anyways after pistol whipping AJ and kidnapped and robbed Bradly cooper. I’m sure Jason felt miserable just knowing that Bradly cooper is the district attorney for the town and is the one that killed his father. Im guessing the more he stayed in that town it will just give him more Depression to use drugs and being in trouble. I’m sure he left for the greater good from being away from the law and causing anymore trouble for his family. I would have left to tbh lol.

The use of both Frates and Bon Iver makes this movie even better. It is already my favorite film of all time, but those two songs seal the deal

This ending would have been so much better if it had ended with trailer music. The same song played with Luke drove off.

I think the song choice is meant to reflect that something is different. Jason is now free (or is he?). If the same music that we heard in the trailer and throughout the movie had played it would’ve suggested that nothing changed.

A movie that encapsulates the legacy passed from father to son, and the variable age between them. But in this moment, it really shows what legacy means to this character, and how legacy can be chosen to take with, or that has always been there. Inheritance.

I really like the ending of the movie, a direct parallel to the French movie Rust and Bone, and it was released right at the same time!
