I am very glad to hear you are focusing your energy on larger projects. I'm excited for the new edition of Atomic Punk. I am looking forward to this examination and reconstruction of Original D&D plus Chainmail(plus Outdoor Exploration?). "Wightbox" makes me chuckle, but it's also kinda foreboding. This new year is going to be great and I love to see the emphasis on positive fun, and I also look forward to my printed Macuahuitl.

I wish you much success with WightBox. It is not easy to write a 0e retroclone. I had the same conclusion re: Chainmail and Outdoor Survival (and FFC). Together there is a complete and crunchy set of rules.

Looking forward to the new series you're about to make, and the solo plays. I agree, it does have its benefits trying to focus on the positive things, instead of the negatives. I try my best on just to focus on the older games I like, and some new. And looking at older rpg's gives the opportunity to find a gem you might have otherwise overlooked. Also nice beard.

I played solo traveller for the bulk of my Season 3 (podcast)! I'd love to hear more CT solo for sure. I'm also interested in how your 0e clone will differ from Delving Deeper. I'm definitely fascinated with the whitebox.

Just some thoughts from a OG who was there very early on. My circle of friends started with a RPG game called Monsters, Monsters. This was replaced by the white box of D&D plus the 4 Supplements (What were they...Greyhawk, Blackmoor, Enriched Wizardly and Gods, Demigods and Heros). To be honest we found playing was rather difficult. Then a new edition of the basic rules was released in a box with a Red Dragon sitting on a pile of gold with a wizard and a fighter with a bow on the cover. This was a great improvement and we found this edition to really work and provided much enjoyment in those heady days of the 1970s. On a side note; we played other games and the one that still stands out in my memory was a RPG called Top Secret. It was a spy game set in the modern day. We were all into James Bond as everyone else was during those times. The game was really good.

The key to 0e, in my opinion, is chainmail. It becomes a proto AD&D before supplement 1 with it.

I don't think 0e is simple or "rules-light". At least 3LBBs and not clones. Especially when you factor in chainmail. You get a game that is just as crunchy as AD&D1e. That's going to be the point of the series of videos. This lost D&D.

@@TheBasicExpert For that it really does depend more on the DM in the case of OD&D. The game itself does lend more to adjudication, however, it becomes more granular with the addition of Chainmail, but then you're most likely going to include some type of miniatures, miniature stand-in tokens and it's going to take on more of a wargame feel.

@@ravenwulfgar I would say, Chainmail is required for a coherent game. It's listed next to dice, paper, and pencils in the materials list in book 1. I view 0e as a supplement to chainmail. But this is going to be the point of the series of videos. That the game has been misunderstood since the beginning.

I think alot of the game was lost when splat settings started being introduced. Up through 1e 3 books the game built a specific setting and the rules focused on that. The game plays amazing as a d6 miniatures campaign withe 3lbb and Chainmail. It is elegant and exciting. Looking forward to your interpretation of it.

I have seen OSR focus on material mostly from B/X, BECMI, and 0D&D. I haven't found much that includes the expanded rules from 1e AD&D. There is plenty of rough edges in 1e that needs better layout, formatting, rewritten, playtest, all the while staying true to the source material. The stripping of functions is very predominate, yet a claim of capability with all systems: 0D&D, B/X, BECMI, 1e AD&D, and 2e AD&D. What these retroclones do is start with less, and expect you the DM to fill in the gaps. What they do not do is start with more, and let the DM decide what to cut.

I think the only OD&D clone that has come close to being true and worth something is Delving Deeper. I think 0e has a lot of room here because everything for it seems to be a rule 0 heavy thing which I do not care for.

Will WightBox use the chainmail 2d6 resolution? The low OD&D stat modifiers have a much bigger impact on combat die rolls with chainmail 2d6, vs. the 'alternate' d20 system that became the standard.

It will use the chainmail man to man table converted to the d20 alternative system. The distance above or below 7 is used to derive a modifier from the chainmail man to man.

I recently discovered 0e play through Swords & Wizardry and I have to say that while I like S&W better for adjudicating the rules from one book, the little brown books are so rich as reading material and in providing advice for the game

I generally like Swords and Wizardry but I disagree with some assumptions and changes. It's a good game on it's own if you don't see it as an attempt at a clone but more influenced by 0e to be a bit different.

'Wightbox' sounds cool... I love a 0e clone! Maybe this will become apparent in future videos, but how do you see your approach to 0e being different from other 0e clones like 'Delving Deeper' or 'White Box: FMAG'?

I like WBFMAG and I really like DD. But neither of these have weapon vs. armor tables, from which I extrapolate modifiers from Chainmail's man-to-man tables. I also use the weapon class from chainmail (a sort of proto-weapon speed in 1e). Weapon class allows parrying, breaking weapons, and multiple attacks because of weapon matchups. Other aspects of chainmail are taken such as fighting capability for all classes. Those are just a few from the top of my head.

@@KraftyMattKraft first off, you’re being rude, we are talking about games here. Can you do that like an adult and refrain from insults? Secondly, popularity doesn’t equal quality. Thirdly, the game was short lived back in the day because one of the designers died and legal issues kept the game out of print until a few years ago. Fourthly, the legacy edition was priced at like $300 which is insane. And finally, many great games don’t ever become very popular because people have a sick obsession with d20 level based games. Other systems: 2d6, 3d6, d100, and dice pool systems all have tons of advantages over d20, but the close minded masses simply refuse to branch out.
