Just so refreshing when some channels might say eff off to see someone so open to constructive criticism.
@PilotExplorer3 жыл бұрын
PEC fault on a ATR in fairly common, usually on the ground the reset does the job usually after start sequence due to small micro circuit cuts on the aircraft. I have heard of PEC failing in flight too but it’s manageable manually, in this case the plane was pretty much domed due to the various other problems it had which could not have been controlled from the flight deck. The prop not feathering produces so much drag on Pratt Witney engines that it won’t let the ATR plane climb even at lower altitudes. Flying this in the simulator with engine failure and without Auto Feather, it’s a very big deal as it’s close to impossible for the plane to climb and control. There is whole Emergency briefing that dictates manual feathering of the engine before anything else can be carried out otherwise the plane will bank, yaw uncontrollably, loose all the energy, stall and fall!!
@JohannesKonow3 жыл бұрын
You seem to be in the know. Is the propeller motor hydraulic since the OSG seem to bleed off oil to return? If the blades seized in 0 pitch (100 percent drag, 0 percent thrust), that makes the plane unflyable from what I understand. Can't you just install some form explosive to sever the blade hub from the engine should this situation occur? Hydraulics is incredibly sensitive to any debris so there are many things that could potentially lock the pitch of the blades.
@captainsidewinder3 жыл бұрын
Yes the props move via hydraulic pressure and counter weights on the prop root from windmilling to feathered, only pilots who fly on the line know how serious a unfeathered prop can be, it’s like have a parachute on the back in the aircaft

@@4evertrue830 Hi, from what I understood, the plane was halfway from either airport, The plane has to go over Hindu kush range at Lawari with peaks over 12,000ft. There seems to be an inerrant problem with the ATR 42 & 72 engines, numerous reports of engine problems over the years have led to many incidents. I would not fly on any regional Turbo prop aircraft especially in countries where money is not available for proper maintenance. Back in 2006 I was in Iran waiting for a flight from Mashhad to the old Tehran International known as Maher Abad, our flight was to be on a TU154 there was a problem with one of the engines that they were trying to fix. Four hours went by when they announced boarding, I refused to board the plane as I had a bad feeling about the plane. Iran Air put us on a Fokker 100. Anyway a few days after our return to the UK I heard that the TU154 we were due to fly on had crashed near Shiraz.

@@patjohn775 Nooooooo!!!! Not TV!!! Lol. Somewhat dramatic, I know. But seriously. Mini does such a good job of researching these events and providing facts of the incident and causes in a non biased very concise presentation. He breaks everything down in a manner that anyone can understand even if they are not a pilot and don’t understand how airplanes work. I’m concerned that producers would ruin his work and shift the focus to the “drama” and butcher (they call it editing) his presentations somehow into a reality TV abomination and hour long, but somehow have less content the way they dilute any show with a modicum of actual tangible information in them. I do agree that he needs more compensation and recognition for the sheer amount of time and effort invested in his excellent work. Could you imagine what the history channel would do to something this good? They would attribute everything without a clear cut causation to fucking aliens!!
@broomstock93873 жыл бұрын
@@matthewl67 Yes! Spot on, history channel and National Geographics also, claiming sea monsters as the cause of missing airplanes in the Bermuda Triangle. ( LOL) Rather than a lack of landmarks, as everything looks the same over an ocean. A deviation in unexpected IMC with unknown winds and unknown wind correction angle, whilst navigating by dead reckoning over an ocean, was a definite way to get lost and run out of fuel. Back then there were no Gps or meteorological satellites to determine winds aloft or surface winds over the ocean, which means an attempted rescue would be searching in a completely different area and would also risk getting lost. Add to all of this, compass errors and magnetic deviations, as flying by a compass would have been the only means of direction finding over an open ocean.

The lack of maintenance oversight is typical of PIA and other carriers with little government mandated requirements for suggested repairs from the manufacturer. Also you can see that these were airplane operators not pilots.. (Typical of PIA. See the PIA crash 8303. Failing to put the landing gear down???) If they flew by AQP standards they would not have stalled the plane. They would have attempted to put the plane down. Great job in describing this event!

Ok, lets just forget the shabby maintenance for a second, - When the PEC failed, the crew cycled it for three times to reset it right ? In another comment i already stated "If the checklist, QRH or whatever kind of manual requires to cyle, you do this only once !" And than of course you do this only when the manual states such a procedure. Swiching of the PEC brings the prop in a manual mode which in essense and under normal conditions would be good enough to complete the flight savely. The engine failure would state that the engine would have to shutdown which includes feathering the prop. I do agree that this is what the crew eventualy did. Would they have done this right away there was a much larger chance the prop would have feathered and the crippled airplane would have survived. - Over the years one can conclude most aviation accidents are result of not following proper procedures. Eigther by the flightcrew, the maintenance crew or anyone else involved by the operationm. Lack of descent training may be the cause of this, This again may be caused by economical considerations.

The problem i see with this flight is more about pilot pressure to complete the flight regardless of circumstances. On climb out, they only reached a max speed of 145 knots; just 25 knots over their minimum? That's the point I would have started looking for a landing site and getting that plane on the ground safely. Then you add the fact they didn't feather and shut down that engine at the first sign of a pitch alarm? That's problematic. Let alone the fact that they were allowing autopilot to fly the plane when there were obvious mechanical problems that the autopilot may not have been able to account for. In this situation the saying, "Its better to be alive and embarrassed, then dead." And by that, I mean, at any time after seeing just that 25 knot window to the planes stall speed they could have turned around.. but chose to continue.
@broomstock93873 жыл бұрын
@Kevin Payne I would just like to add the following; Oftentimes in these situations there are "other unknown" pre-existing maintenance issues which the airline will try to hide either from accident investigators or from civil lawsuit attorneys, but was a serious issue for the pilots. Yet it never gets to the knowledge of the general public. 2) It is so easy to armchair quarterback in the comfort of a quiet room. Where there are no blaring bells and loud sounds, and no impending fear of doom. In that emergency situation where you don't have control of the aircraft and you are literally fighting for your life, you need extra time to think of something new, when what you have been trained to do is not working or correcting the situation.

Some clarification: the governor adjusts propeller speed by changing the angle of the blades. Engine oil is used as a pseudo-hydraulic fluid to control blade angle. The propeller governor adjusts the propeller blade angle to keep the propeller RPM where the pilots want it. When oil is let into the prop hub, propeller angle decreases and rpm increases. When oil is let out, propeller blade angle increases and rpm decreases. Sounds like the blocked PVM prevented oil from exiting the prop system, which in turn prevented the propeller blade angle from increasing and feathering the prop. The pilots truly didn't stand a chance!
@erich9303 ай бұрын
Note: the overspeed governor is not the same one that is primary used for RPM control, it is only there for propeller overspeed protection.

In all honesty, I wasn't understanding your technical explanations tonight! ? What soothes me though is the fact that I've had a drink and a smokes, and the fact you said it's one of the most complex incidents you have tried to summarize .... Thanks for this video and I'm looking forwards to the next one..
@gilbertfranklin15373 жыл бұрын
I did not realize how complex turboprop engines were until I saw this explanation. There is no way that a typical pilot would know about all these built-in engine features. They have to rely on the maintenance people to follow the manufacturers' instructions, and hope that the alarm notification messages are clear enough for the aviation crew to take steps to overcome such issues in flight. But, obviously, this is not always going to be the case. Every person who flies on these passenger aircraft must accept the risk, and trust that all the support people have done their best work - and that the maker of the aircraft has created a safe machine. All the comments about whose god, prophet, or savior is involved must realize that it is humans that provide a safe trip, or lack thereof... no one else.

I always wonder, how you can read what has happened from the parts left over after a crash. how do you know what's impact damage and what was broken before the crash? I can't even tell you in which way these investigators are amazing, because I can't comprehend how this works :-P

By shutting down the damaged engine, the accident would not have happened, always remember to fly the plane first and remove all the obstacles to flying, sure the left engine would cause drag when it is off, yet it is better to have it off than having an engine running and causing more drag.

@MiniAirCrashInvestigation3 жыл бұрын
No I won’t be covering it for a year to a year and a half. I’ want to wait for the full final report so that we have all the facts. A video right now would just be speculation and barely rooted in facts. Because no one really knows what happened. I’d rather let people like Juan Browne from the blancolirio channel make initial “what happened to flight 182 videos” because they know a lot more than me and they have years and years of experience to draw on. A video from me at this time would not do the people who have been affected by flight 182 Justice. Thank you for understanding

Well done at explaining the multiple failures causing the sad demise of this final flight. You're right, any one of those individual failures would be sufficiently worthy of their own episodes -- but instead of reporting on a catastrophe, you'd be reporting on seperate survivable incidents. One point of clarification on feathering, the act of changing the pitch of the propeller blades is not in itself called feathering -- instead, to feather means to put the propellers' pitch angle at or near 90° so that the airflow no longer is able to spin the propellers (think weather vaning) -- in that position, the drag caused by a non-powered propeller is at its absolute minimum. I know that's what you meant when you were describing the act of feathering, but I think it was either unclear or a little confusing at first... Again, well done explaining everything!
