I’ve heard that in a narcissistic family unit, there is always a scapegoat. Moriah was the scapegoat because she was the “rebel” 🧐 I guess you could call it that. But Olivia came along, stole one of Kim’s emotional husbands and suddenly she’s the manipulator. Could have sworn that Micah and Moriah complained about their parents being manipulative as well. It’s so sad that they all blame Olivia and don’t take any accountability on themselves or the upbringing they had of always being told that “others or the devil will influence you”. Who influenced the mother to start drinking? Who influenced the divorce? The parents have never done anything close to that. Sure they’ve had disagreements with Olivia, but they’ve always been willing to respect and coexist with each other. The parents haven’t spewed lies or unjustified ultimatums like Olivia has. I’ll never forget Moriah’s quote at the end of Season 4 in regards to Olivia’s demands/ultimatums- *”The next time someone makes me choose, I’m going to pick the people that are not making me choose.”*

She has been the same person the whole time. She didn't change that much at all. The only thing she changed was how much of herself she was hiding from Ethan.

Im not the biggest fan of Olivia. But Moriah and Micah are really ungrateful. She took them in and became a big sister to them when their parents didn’t want them because they wanted to live their lives. The least they could show is a little gratitude.

No Olivia loved the fact Moriah and Micah also believed everything Olivia told them and believed about their parents. Olivia didn't like Kim or Barry, and for that reason she wanted others to also agree with her on it all. It wasn't until Olivia realised it wasn't all about her (She played the victim too!) that she freaked out and was finally over with changing and controlling Ethan as much as she could while damaging his relationship with his parents and siblings too. It wasn't healthy on both sides but to say Olivia wasn't bad or to blame is not right. Kim and Olivia had a lot in common! If others don't realise that.. that's a shame!

Barry and Kim want to talk to Olivia and have a relationship, but Olivia almost gets panic attacks, pours on the drama, and acts like they have a contagious disease every time she is anywhere near them. Olivia does not have to like Barry and Kim, but if she is going to stay in the family, she should learn how to be cordial when she is around them. That would have solved lots of problems.

When people have been toxic to you many times, then sometimes the body reacts to those people like *they* are a toxic substance. Given that the Plath's started out as a religiously extreme entity, the damage that caused the children is on full display. Ethan gets red as a lobster when he gets angry, rather than express it in a healthy way. Suppressed. The father is like he is stunted at 18 and is exploring the world for the first time. None of them talk easily and freely with each other. Everyone is so withholding and never learned how to be vulnerable, direct and honest. I have found Olivia to be direct, honest, vulnerable and it is natural that the suppressed Plath's would recoil, reject and scapegoat her for this. No one should *have* to be cordial to anyone that is disrespectful. That is just putting up with toxicity. I think it shows great inner strength to demand respect and hold strong boundaries with people who don't respect them. Respecting Olivia's boundaries would have solved a lot of problems.

I think her breakup with Max really affected her on a subconscious level. My theory is that it might have stirred up some feelings that she was cheated on because she chose a "worldly" path and was reaping the results. Purity culture, especially when raised in such an isolated and strict environment, is really hard to break free of. These girls are raised to think the first boy they ever date will be their husband. It's not a mindset you can just switch off. She was so serious about him. Then add the parents divorce to the mix. She probably has some misplaced guilt with that too, plus her familiar security blanket of how things should be/should go is just falling apart. I think encountering unfortunate but normal life experiences is making her want to run home because there's a certain simplicity and comfort in fundamentalism. It's not particularly hard or complex. There are clear rules for you to follow, unlike all the messy greyness of the real world. On Olivia -- it doesn't really matter what your assessment of her character is. In this instance, she took those kids in and, from what was shown here, took on a parental/big sis role even though she was very young herself. Their response is very very childish and ungrateful. It wasn't on her to "show them the world" or do it in a perfect, gentle way. She was an isolated child herself with her own frustrations and trauma. They were adults too, accountable for themselves. They weren't complaining about the free housing and support at the time. I think the Plath kids simply don't like the messy, ickiness of actual life. It's easier to blame Olivia and run back to Sunday school constructs than it is to continue on the scary path of adulthood. The mature response would be to take what they've learned from Olivia, good and bad, thank her for the assistance and carry on independently, taking a bit of their upbringing and a bit of what they learned from her "cynical/worldly" views to make up their own minds as whole, mature individuals. Again, they were adults. It's silly to say Olivia influenced them to such a degree. She didn't make Moriah wear heart-butt pants to tea with her parents. If you think about it, they came to Olivia for help saying their parents were manipulative. Now they've boomeranged back to their parents crying the same about Olivia. I see them both going down a toxic trajectory and it's so sad and disappointing to see from where they started at when they first moved out.

And if the parents were less concerned with the defending of their character over whats actually best for their family and their children, they wouldnt be encouraging further fractures. Lead by example then. The two adults who actually got their developmental and social needs met, should be falling over themselves to correct the issues they see their older children having. Particularly in education. And the two of them are "healing their family" by acting like a pair of teenage girls fanning the fire and trying to win their clique back. When your sh#t parents are ALL you have or know, you have to pyschologically romanticise them sometimes because you desperately need A parent. For the two kids here, they really want , even NEED their parents to come through and be who they would like them to be. But its only a matter of time before they are let down again, because neither of these "parents" have any clue. Took me until into my 30s to finally accept my parents for who they show me to be and to make those final severances.

Olivia was the scapegoat, not the narcissist. When the whole family has problems and cannot confront them directly, which the Plath's clearly exhibit, they blame everything on the person who is different. Given that Olivia married one of the golden children and "took him away" by actually going and living away from the superself family, and that she had different beliefs, personality and freely spoke her mind, and that she wasn't blood kin, meant that she would be the one to take the blame for all the issues the Plath's did not have psychological understanding or willingness to deal with. Labels have their true meaning, and rumors aren't worth a damn. That's what happened.

She practically threw a fit when Moriah and Micah wanted to go to the grave with Kim to see their little brother's tomb. She refused to have Barry or Kim in the room when she wanted to talk to the little sisters. She wanted a picture of all Plath siblings but was bossy about not wanting Barry and Kim around. She only wanted to create divisions. If she has that much trauma at the sight of Barry and Kim, she needs some serious mental health therapy.

I’m glad Olivia and Ethan are getting divorced. She took in more than one of his siblings due to their parents being shitty parents and as soon as they got on their own they switched up on her. Olivia is the reason they can live on their own, have passions, and be expressive with their interests emotions and needs. That said, the Plath siblings are stunted in so many ways, and they think it’s all about the scapegoat-olivia-when it’s really all about Kim. The whole family is damaged, and Olivia will move on! I don't think there's anything wrong with the way they were raised in terms of growing up on the farm, avoiding sugar , and dressing modestly but the control their mothers trys to hold over them and the way she manipulates them is wrong. I feel like part of the support was getting to have them on her side and on her side only. She has been right about things but hasn't been very objective about everything that has happened. To grow up is to see things in less black and white manner, and Moriah and Micah have gained this whole new point of view for everything. They will notice and they still understand that Olivia hasn't been all wrong, that their parents aren't perfect and that Olivia has been mistreated as well. But after years of seeing things from one side only, they see their past and reoationship on a different light now and after all that time they need that moment to share their feelings and realizations, to psychologically let go of the past and to reconnect with those who they had kind of turned their backs on a bit.

Narcissistic systems come in all forms. Religious families can be narcissistic but with a religious twist. Religion is very easily twisted and can do a lot of damage. Just like family connections can help and nurture, but they can also hurt and damage if they are not healthy. Unfortunately, these people were raised in a very specific indoctrinated upbringing and it is very hard to know what was healthy in their upbringing and what wasn't. Given that they are emotionally stunted, it is going to take a lot of work to psychologically catch up. I'm not saying this to be hurtful. I got help with this from a therapist and it made all the difference for me. I hope they pursue growth and self understanding and find the peace they all seem to seek.

Its easy to criticize Olivia but she was only defense every damn day and trying to defend herself and set boundaries against her in-laws. It’s very easy for everyone on the outside to judge the Plath family but reality is there is Olivia’s side of the story, The family’s side of the story and then there is the truth. I can understand where Moriah and Micah are coming from because they saw the changes in Ethan. Was Ethan under Olivia’s control? Absolutely! Olivia was no different from his parents. It came to the point everything had to be her way or it’s the highway. When you love someone you never do that. You gotta understand when you marry someone you are marrying not only the person but the family as well. This is a concept most people in this modern era don’t want to understand. This is why when you are dating someone always get to know the family. It’s very important that in a relationship on both ends the family accept and get along with one another and the people their relative are dating. That way the relationship remains happy and healthy. The Plath family have their issues 100%, BUT they have since then moved forward, moved past all issues they had and they are now trying to reinforce their bond. That’s a step in the right direction for everyone. Everyone wanted to move forward, apologize and heal, while Olivia was being stubborn and refused to accept that. She was being toxic and Ethan doesn’t need that in his life. He needs a supportive wife not a divisive wife. I know this more than anyone because my aunt and uncle married toxic spouses who brainwash them on a daily basis to the the point my entire family is broken. I don’t talk to my cousins or anyone anymore because I was fed up with their toxic behavior.
