Unfortunately companies are restricted from creating gaming phones like the Xperia Play due to Sony patenting the slide out gaming controller concept starting in 2006.
@vinniethedrifter8 күн бұрын
Oh man what a bummer. I was thinking companies are not doing this because people would figure out how to mod those phones the second they got them, and they're scared of that. This is even worse 😢
@Ratersen8 күн бұрын
What about creating a gaming phone that can magnetically attach instead? Or rotate instead of slide out
@pawepiat61708 күн бұрын
Patents expiere after 20 years iirc, so we could see one in the near future

Controller patents don't work or Nintendo wouldn't have been allowed to make the Nintendo Wii among other devices they whole-hogged from other patents. The truth is no one would use it to warrant the effort. It's nearly 2025 and no native mobile game would benefit from a controller over the touch screen. Even the Hoyoverse clone games like ZZZ or Genshin or the other same shits don't matter because the game registers input so glacially slow (because, remember, it expects a touch screen where fast inputs just aren't possible) that a controller wouldn't even work good.

Imagine this as a new age phone? Snapdragon 8 gen 2/3, oled display, 16 gigs of ram, nice battery, and solid first party Sony support. That'd be pretty cool. Even tho it won't ever happen again. Smh

Ah, so that's why HMD Global is trying to get ahead of the curve by joining Fairphone and Shiftphone is ultrarepairability.
@SP956 күн бұрын
There is no reason that format should remain obsolete, it still makes sense as of today. It's not the concept itself that was disregarded but Sony phones themselves since Android was already taking off. Now that displays are much bigger, there is far more performance and games look nicer while also being cheaper this concept makes perfect sense in a modern android environment.

2010-2011 is one of my fondest smartphone eras. Companies hadn't settled on a de facto form factor yet so everything and anything was fair game. So many weird and interesting concepts came out in this era and that's what makes me sad now. I remember thinking back then "Wow, if we can achieve this with our limited tech now, imagine what these concepts would look like in the future with more powerful tech". I used to imagine what the Xperia Play of the late 2010s or the 2020s would look like. Sadly we never got to see it even when our tech is more than capable now.
