He truly turned into Orson Welles. His talent dissipated early and he spent the rest of his life years broke, struggling to get work and selling stories about his heyday for money and attention. Perhaps if he was a better human....

Peter turned into a combination of both Welles and, ironically, Hearst/Kane. He never accumulated Hearst's wealth and power, but the Bel Air home was his Xanadu and Cybill was his Marion Davies.

I prefer What's Up, Doc and Paper Moon to The Last Picture Show. Those two films were the peak of his career and proof of his genius.

I enjoyed this very much, Ben, bit I disagree with you that Bogdanovich's best film is The Last Picture Show. I think it's Paper Moon. By the time he made that he'd reached the peak of technical prowess. There isn't a single wasted shot in that film. Every single shot moves the narrative along. Even the black and white has an actual thematic purpose: you're filming the depression in mid-Western dust bowl states. The black and white emphasizes the dourness of life. His use of light is perfect, his pacing is perfect, his continuity is never once interrupted by a digression or non sequitur. It's a true work of art where every scene can mean something more than what it's actually showing you on screen. My God, the simple scene with Addie sitting on the paper moon in the photo both at the carnival, waiting for Moe, waiting for some meaning and stability to descend into her life, blows away any scene in Picture Show, which has to rely on much more violent imagery to achieve its effects. In that scene we realize much of what we imagine life to be is merely a paper moon, hanging over a cardboard sky. Truth as illusion; illusion as truth. What more do you want from a work of art?

Watched it last night. I was impressed, felt like an European film. It kind of sinks into complete depression by the end, which is always strange to me, why american oscar movies are almost forcing them selves into melodramatic saddens.

Everyone has their own temperament, but his brief comments about the death of his father struck me as just a little bit odd. “Last Picture Show” is one of my favorite movies. The only thing I didn’t quite buy was the rich kid throwing naked pool parties. They were great scenes, but I thought it was stretching credulity, especially considering the time period. But in the end it worked.
