4 years ago (and i swear this ìs true!) I was googeling for christmas songs. And the name kirsty maColl came up in my head (i knew her songs like new England) but came to this song. When i watched the clip to the end , i saw the date Dec 18. Really chilling. But i will always remember her when I hear this song.

Ella is amazing here, you can't compare her to Kirsty. Ella sings with a different emotion. You can see in her eyes how she feels and that she wasn't trying to emulate Kirsty, but to honor her. Beautiful rendition.

@@robertcurrie8510 I think it was an emotional moment for all of them. When this song came out in '88 I can guarantee you they had no idea it would become the modern-day icon that it is today. Nearly 30 years later when they did this performance. They're practically old men in this video. Yet still deliver it with the same spirit as in the very beginning. It truly is something beautiful to see. But yeah, for her maybe it was special in a different way. I definitely know what you mean.

God Bless Shane, the band and Ella Finer 😇 You know, I've not really been into the Pogues until recent, sure i heard a couple songs of theirs, but until recent i'm really enjoying the music. After watching a few interviews with Shane (past to present) i can't help but feel for Shane, but much respect, he's had a hard life and took the rightful path to music. I find Shane a remarkable, interesting and unique person, with so much talent! I hope that Shane will find his way (it's now 2023 i write this) and find reconciliation and peace within. Thank you Shane and the Pogues for bringing some light into my life, love your music, God Bless you all.

YES ... but ... the singer he looks at is the co-writer of the song, fer god's sake, so I hope people give her some credit. She sings very well, and on pitch. I think I read that it was because Ella Finer has been reading the Irish witerary novelist JP Donleavy's Fairytale of New York that the title had been grabbed. Kirsty didn't co-write it and I think they sang it about equally, though of course it IS sad that Kirsty, daughter of the great Ewan, died of a speedboat bump where it shouldn't have been ... a swimming/diving area.
