He died years ago! We got three albums out of him and got to see his genius after that he was an addict and the drink especially ruined him like it does to any chronic alcoholic

I was 20 in 1985, from a merseyside irish family, met loads of folk like me from england, scotland, ireland etc.,all living away from home in London,, we found the pogues. Wow

You've also maintaned your Irish surname. 😊 Comes from Rua (red) as Gaeilge. Love Merseyside and the northwest generally. Home of so much great music, many of which are also from Irish backgrounds.

Absolute Genius. I remember hearing him back in 1985. I was 18 and I fell in love with his music. He was more than a song write, a poet. How many people who listened to the Pogues became interested in traditional Irish music. A true ambassador to Irish music and culture. Listening to music got me interested in reading Yeats, Joyce and T.S. Elliot. Brilliant and will be miss.

Sounds so simple. But no-one else can do it. Buddy Holly, Bob Marley, Shane McGowan - kings of the simple song that no-one else can do and that wraps me up in tears, love, joy, amazement, and beautiful disbelief.
