I love the contrast of Christine's voice during the lines "The tears I might have shed for your dark fate/Grow cold, and turn to tears of hate." I think that really helps expand her character, and really divides her from the innocent girl she was in the beginning of the musical.

@danahenrickson33788 жыл бұрын
Here's my interpretation of Christine's position. You're a girl who has practically grown up an orphan, the only strong man in your life died when you were young. You grow up in an opera house, a world of beauty, art, and magic. You are faced with 2 men: Erik, a man of passion and artistic understanding but also a man of violence and mental instability based on a lifetime of emotional abuse because of something he had no control over; Raoul, a lover of beauty and art and a respectful man of societal character, but though he appreciated the arts he was never able to fully understand it the way Christine or the Phantom did. Christine was a young girl at the time, but she and the Phantom both knew she belonged in a world of light. She wanted to choose Erik, she even put the ring on her finger and chose him, not because he was threatening to kill Raoul but because her temporary hate subsided and she wanted to show him that dispite all he'd done he could still be loved by her, but he suddenly realized that the light her soul was made of would soon fade if he kept her in his world of darkness and she would no longer be the woman he loved. And once that light faded, she would no longer be happy and she would eventually grow to hate him. Suddenly realizing this, he was determined not to be that selfish, so he told her to go with Raoul. Yeah, Raoul fought for her, but Erik (finally learning his fault in his actions) let her go and promised to never interrupt her life again. Which one of them loved her the most in the end?

I just want to take a moment to appreciate the absolute GENIUS cinematography at 3:24 when the Phantom is yelling at her to make her choice: Gerard's gorgeous face is completely hidden by shadows and all we see is the deformity of the phantom. And I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel complete fear at that exact moment! It's quite literally the Phantoms murderous nature come COMPLETELY to the surface with no sign of the Angel of Music we all fell in love with, only the demon is there. Any other time we've seen the phantom, we see both sides of his face with or without the mask which reminds us that while he is beautiful, he is also frightening. At 3:24, we only feel fear. But after Christine kisses him, we see the angel again and he realizes how monstrous he was, thus he lets her go. Again, absolute genius cinematography!

I think for movie, they do want to show a handsome face on one side so audiences would find it easier to empathise with him. It's not right, but I think that's how they decided.
@FitForRivals1256 жыл бұрын
Actually, what is considered to be one of the best performances of this of Phantom of the Opera ever, which was a Broadway production of it, also had a very handsome man playing Erik. Micheal Crawford was quite attractive, even with all the makeup for the deformity. It never said the Phantom was horrifying as a whole. Not anywhere did it say that he was absolutely disgusting. It just says he has a horrifying deformity. If you look up Micheal Crawford as the Phantom, you can see that he, too, was attractive. He wasn't SUPPOSED to be completely hideous. The part of his face that wasn't deformed was SUPPOSED to be attractive, so as to draw in Christine. Do you think that if the Phantom was an all around hideous person Christine would have even considered for one second the thought of loving him? He had a horrifying deformity, but his whole face isn't supposed to be hideous. He's actually meant to be handsome on the part of his face that isn't deformed. That's part of why Christine fell in love with him in the beginning of the movie in the first place.
@user-qv4ip5if9x6 жыл бұрын
NicoNekoChorus even so, in the original Phantom of the Opera novel by Gaston Leroux, the phantom is described as completely hideous, with not one, but both sides of his face being described as follows, "His eyes are so deep that you can hardly see the fixed pupils. You just see two big black holes, as in a dead man's skull. His skin, which is stretched across his bones like a drumhead, is not white, but a nasty yellow. His nose is so little worth talking about that you can't see it side face; and _the abscence_ of that nose is a horrible thing to look at." So while it makes sense that the musical and movie adaptations go with a half faced deformity, what is deformed should be deformed.

Yeah, that's one of the worst tragedies of the entire story. His own mother was afraid of him. He never understood what it actually felt like to be loved. I think that the Phantom, had Christine chosen him, would've been kind to her. You can see, when he's talking to her, that he wouldn't be harsh with her unless he had to be. If you saw your love interest french-kissing someone who then tries to kill you, and you had no reason to be kind, then you would probably want to kill them. The only difference is that he doesn't understand how wrong it is to kill someone, so he tries to kill Raoul.

He knew how bad killing someone is, it was the 19th century, it was everywhere that killing someone was bad, the difference was he thought getting rid of ppl to have what he wanted was justifiable which puts him firmly in the category of selfish and entitled to me. His mother was afraid of him, yes its sad but he's not the only one (it was the 19th century, most mothers didnt love their kids) and he had no kindness shown to him? False, The lady who rescued him from the circus was kind to him and loved him like family, going so far as to enabled him in his madness. Either way, his sad backstory doesn't justify murder. It just makes him creepy as hell (if you saw someone you loved kissing someone, is your reaction to kidnap them and threaten to murder the person they kissed if they didnt comply?) Her leaving him wasnt a tragedy, it was a happy ending (she got to leave, and everyone lived), no one wants to stay with their stalker, trust me.

What if Raoul actually died? I'd imagine it would dead silent and phantom releases Raoul from his binding's as he slumps over. He'd turn towards Christine and start to sing all I ask of you. Numb and silent she would walk towards phantom and he would open his arms to her, brushing past him she walks to Raoul's body staring down at it. Kneeling she would cradle Raoul's head in her lap and sing hauntingly "you alone can make my soul take flight" tears would run down her face as she chokes up "it will never end....the music of the night" Phantom would look down in remorse for he now knows that Christine would never love him. Curtains close, show ends..........OR! what if when she is holding Raoul's head she sings ,"you alone can make my soul take flight" (picks up a near by "sharp object"; glass shard, metal idk) she looks towards phantom " its over now the music of" and slits her throat and kills the one thing that phantom loved about her, "the night". Her voice, she slumps over Raoul's body and both of their soul's ascend towards heaven for she truly is now phantom's "angel of music".

I can understand wanting to kill him if he killed Raoul but that really wasn't Christines nature.
@Catlady41410 жыл бұрын
While I pity the Phantom, once there was a hint of jealousy he wad prepared to kill to keep her. The abandonment issue was real. But she loved someone her own age. He was the same age as her friend (the ballerina's) mother, who helped him hide in the opera house. It wasn't his face. It was never his face. It was that he had killed needlessly. He tried to kill Raoul, as well, in front of her, forcing her to make a choice between giving her life to him or killing her fiance. He craved love. Just like any human being. And maybe the desperation drove him to this. But it doesn't make it right. He was cursed into darkness when he was only a child. He was consumed by it. He tried to bring a light with him, but she fled from him, and the poison there. It was a romantic tragedy.

He played his part VERY well. Let me just point out how impressive his pronunciations of p's, b's, and other consonants that consist of making sounds with your lips are. This would prove to be a VERY difficult task due to the amount of makeup he's wearing on his face for the deformity. His face is 100% makeup. And to create the swollen flesh look, they had to put on SO MUCH makeup, including on his lips. So with how much makeup he's wearing, it would be very difficult to even get your lips to fully touch. Have you ever had a swollen lip? There are parts of your lips, close to where it's swollen, that aren't quite touching. So to work his way around the makeup and manage to have such powerful consonants is extremely impressive. He's even said that it was very hard to pronounce some words due to the massive amounts of makeup he's wearing. So not only is his performance perfect, his perfect pronunciation is rather amazing.

The emotion he puts into this scene makes you truly feel his love for Christine and that he couldn't bear to think of her as a hostage or in distress or pain.

I wanted Raoul to be like Phoebus. In the original novel the hunchback of notre dame by Victor Hugo, Phoebus is an antagonist. Despite being of noble birth and very handsome, he is also vain, untrustworthy, and a womanizer. In the end of the novel, he watches Esmeralda's execution with apparently little or no remorse. Raoul is a womanizer who is engaged to another woman, but wants to have sex with christine, but in the end he leaves her.

America Boleyn honestly I think they all played their parts perfectly. Raul is the calm one regardless of the circumstances, it’s just his nature to be soft and calm. The phantom is singing with true rage for their love and the fact that he knows deep down that Christine belongs with Raul. Christine on the the other hand is in a state of true fear and loathing. In the end, I think they all really honestly perfectly complemented each other’s voice regardless of all the different tones they sang it. This scene was so beautiful. They all seem to be feel differently but in actuality they’re all in pain because of this love triangle and their fear of losing the one they love.

Best scene of the entire movie in my opinion. The moment where every single characters puts love before fear and hatred. Gerard Butler perfectly portrays the demented mind of the Phantom, battling with his obsession and lust, trying to fight through his anger, wanting to put up a fight for what he so eagerly wishes were his, but knowing that he has to put himself second. The whole scene is amazing.

When I was 13 I was struck in the face by a mirror if a van moving 60 om/hr. The character's mistake was allowing the injury or deformity to define him and his fate. It is true as Christine says, "it's in your soul the true distortion lies." Even with such injuries to my face I am married for about 10 years now with two children. It takes compassion and understanding to overcome these things even from the so called victim.

I can’t be the only one who would go with Raoul without a second thought. The Phantom might have been charming and mysterious at first, but kidnapping? Mind games? *Murder?* Raoul is a genuinely good guy. He fought and was willing to die for her so that she could be free and happy. The Phantom kidnapped her and made her face *this.* Even if he did let her go, this is creepy at shit to say the least.

Personally, I think it's the quasi-paternal role that the Phantom took over when she came to the opera house. He taught her music and watched over her for a long time, and she trusted him deeply for it, willing to follow him against all red flags. She did love him, really, but not romantically. Because of that love, she didn't want to simply abandon him like the world did.

This scene is perfect in every way!!!!!!!!!! The harmony between everyone's voice is amazing. I love how when Christine kisses Erik just after this video ends, he realizes he never wanted Christine necessarily, just to be loved and someones first choice. Forcing Christine to be with him is never what he wanted. He hated how she and Raoul were happy, and he wasn't her first choice. He has never known love and just wanted to be cared about. It all went to his head and regretted every second of what he had done. He took it out on them because he was sad and jealous. The Phantom deserved better than Christine...

He finally experiences love and handles it the way he was treated by everyone, with violence and darkness. I agree he went over the line, but I can understand why and still sympathize with him.
