This is amazing, the Police at their best. Almost too fast but so in the pocket. Despite how much Sting and Copeland might have been at odds they were an incredible rhythm section with Summers just throwing tasty guitar atmosphere all over the place. Too bad there are so many close-ups of Stings head and not more of the band playing their instruments.

Who the hell said that Stewart Copeland ain't no Neil Peart!!! Man i grew up loving Neil peart and i was 15 years old and this band highered me and i didn't take it serious the first practice i just winged it and they played everything from The cars, first album then metal and all that chick music i don't remember but they obviously could tell that I was just winging it and watching when to end or change you know i thought that o heard it all on the radio and THEN they said listen if you don't know this song by Monday night and it was Thursday and i was you know the first time I saw Rush live and it was only my second concert Kiss was first and i was i don't know young and then I saw Rush and was hooked on them , Neil. especially with with that big cool bad ass set snd and his Solo on the live all the world's a stage and that was it But i started listening to bruford , Vinny on Joe's Garage and over and over on the outside now like he was playing like the fills were like he was falling down the stairs ,crue slut and the Ocean is the ultimate solution with Bozzio the first song it was like 15 or 20 something minutes long and then terry bozzio with UK Ceasers pallice blues ,his flams around the kit power and his double Bass imitating his flam stuff on the snare or toms and then copping it with his feet and him.live with frank Zappa and Jeff beck anyway my bu polar is kicking my ass but you get the idea! Keith Carlock ,my long lost friend i.mean i miss him and.knew from the first time I saw hy that that God has given him and he definitely earned it but with the wayne Krantz band it was all over and i t jusy got better period with timmy Lavfrea I can't spell it but i love him too so great with no ego and just the nicest and coolest kat Bass man.period I love that guy and miss sll of them but sorry i going to close now because theres too much rot me snd i going to try and get back to to a simple and to that guy saying coplend ain't no peart First of all any buddy who compairs some thing like that id obviously a poor sole.Sorry guy but not trying to be a wise ass but oh sny yes i loved Rush like i said and fid learn that song Cygnus x1 listing to it onand 8 track radio and killed it and gelt it and loved it but i came back to those guys after the weekend snd nailed it and knew it note for note . I'm 59 and stii remember it because they scared me in to learning it perfectly and i believe i did !? But your comparison I'll leave yy waith this Friggin Stewart Copeland on everything ,his style everything and killing The Beds to big without you for get ,!!! I LOVE the Police and know that, as a trio, they have to adapt to live performances. Quite simply, they cannot make all the sounds and noises--keyboards mainly-- necessary to imitate an original studio performance. Long and short, this is why from a musical perspective alot of this sounds fairly crappy. Andy Summer was a unique player and his style just did not translate that well on some songs. Now, the energy and Stewart's drumming and Sting's voice really, really help to make up for it, but it still shows like on Message in a Bottle and others. They needed to embrace the fact that they needed another guitarist or keys player when they played live. But even still----they ROCKED live! (Nowadays, technology helps this issue tremendously--for better or worse: see the controversy of artists usiing backing tracks live.)

I don't think that's quite right. Eventually, Sting wanted to expand and grow. He certainly knew what stars he hitched his wagon to in Stewart and Andy. Their talents are indisputable. However, he's said it himself. At the end of the day, they were just a three piece. He hunkered for a larger ensemble and you could hear that in the arrangements of the 4th and 5th Police albums, Ghosts In The Machine and Synchronicity. They are bigger arrangements with horns and keys, much different than those of Regatta De Blanc and Outlandos D'amour. All three were monsters on their instruments.

I was at Gateshead Stadium that day. Was not a festival, just a Police concert with great support from U2, The Beat, Gang of Four and Lords of the New Church. The sound in the actual stadium was much better than this video.
@davidsanderson59182 жыл бұрын
Yep I was there and you're right. The sound was HUGE compared to this. Not sure how it sounded in the stands but no doubt you were, like me, not far from the front.

We are most likely hearing Stings monitor mix. Not the mix the audience heard. Perhaps the audio from the microphone on board the camera recording this.

Those synth pedals were just way too loud in this mix. In many other live recordings they are actually ok.
@christheghostwriter Жыл бұрын
@@NelsonClick could just be a soundboard mix to the PA. Front of house mixes have to balance the stage volume with the PA volume. If the keys were barely audible on the stage, they'd be cranked in the PA. Conversely, if Andy's guitar was loud on stage, less of it would be sent to the PA, and less of it would be on the soundboard recording. Another possibility is that this is a separate mix for TV broadcast, and whoever was responsible for it did a shitty job

For those who enjoy Stuart Copeland's drumming, I suggest you check out Oysterhead. It was a early to mid-2000s band made up of Copeland, Les Claypool from Primus and Trey Anastasio from Phish. 3 very different bands but they made a pretty cool trio.

***** Thanks Dwight K. Shrute. I wasn't talking about their bass playing, I was talking about their respective skills in manipulating that synthesizer with their feet, generally while singing and playing at the same time. Geddy Lee is a freak of nature, he's always doing, like, four things at once.
@lifrson9 жыл бұрын
+Dave Lowe Exactly, Geddy....Dude, don't fight the pedals LOL! Nah I being a drummer love both Neil and Stewart. 2 different styles that both kick arse. I also was priveledged to attend the filmed Atlanta Synchronicity concert. That was awesome.

I enjoyed watching the Atlanta Synchronciity concert but someone was not doing a good edit as one person in one clip is reading a bloody newspaper... not sure why its in the video and not removed.

@malinwj1167 Жыл бұрын
They had done it all, after the point of Synchronicity. Sting felt there was nothing left to strive. Number 1 album, song, video, and tour ticket sales/earnings...and then Michael Jackson's "Thriller" showed up

Great band and you forget how amazing and unique they were. The energy, the songs the great sound. This was the era of real players, not boy band crap. One Direction are the biggest band now, and it's just all hype and rubbish music, whereas you can still listen to The Police today! I met Sting recently and saw him on the Back To Bass tour. Great musician.
