The Police were a British band, extremely popular in the late 70s and early 80s. With Sting (nickname of Gordon Sumner) as lead singer, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland, the 3 men had their first two hits in 1979: 'So Lonely' (which reached number 31 in the Dutch Top40) and Roxanne (which ended at #21). In the same year, they broke through with 'Can't Stand Losing You' which reached number 9, followed by 'Message In A Bottle, peaking at number 2). The fifth Police hit, 'Walking On The Moon', which was released at the end of that year, then made it to the top 10 at the beginning of 1980 by staying for two weeks on 9.

TopPop was the first regular dedicated pop music TV show in the Dutch language area. Dutch broadcaster AVRO aired the programme weekly, from 1970 to 1988. Presenter Ad Visser hosted the show for its first fifteen years.
