Well, you had a semi controlled burn on your pasture which will probably result in strong regrowth and recovery. As well now the entire herd has imprinted to come to you for safety and been rewarded for it. You can't get much stronger of a connection than that. Glad everyone is ok!

I’m so glad that it was just pasture and that the bison had the smarts to get away and where to go to wait. I know they needed that grass but with rain and time it will come back. At first I was concerned about the fire trucks and firemen out in the field with the bison but big joe knew what to do.

Oh, Dusty! I am soooo very sorry! I am grateful that you have so many friends and neighbors that care about you and your bison/property! The drought has been horrible for quite some time, and the wind makes things even worse! Your work with your Bison paid off--they knew where/how to go to be safe. I was watching thru the window of the deputy's live stream. We/ most of us knew it was Dusty's place. There was alot of prayers lifted up during that fire for the safety of the Bison and your place. Perhaps you have been given your answer with regards to what to do with the run-off rainwater from your barn. Collect and store it in a large tank for emergency use (drought/wildfire). You have aleady seen how quickly a wildfire can get away from you, so having a water supply to protect your assets is a smart move.

The one good thing is that it will green up the pasture. I’m so glad nothing happened with the Bison too! I live in Arizona and the Forest Service has done controlled burns that have gotten out of hand. So thankful nothing bad happened.

Im glad the big fluffs are ok and didnt cause any additional issues Joe's a smart cookie. Make sure you and the human family get some rest too. It was also really cool to see the drone footage and how one could see how it seemed to initially be contained by the roads/frequently driven paths till that bigger one.

I am so glad none of the bison were hurt and the community rallied around to fight the fire and help you get your ranch back in order. Such wonderful people. That was so scary! I was watching the live with Brandon @ RWW. The fire department did respond very fast! I can see God's hand of protection in all of that!! It could have been so much worse. Thank God, the Bison were safe, and the only damage was the fence they had to cut. A big plus, your Bison are going to have some nice green grass to eat soon. God bless.

Dusty, my wife Julie and I have been fans for almost a year now. We were shocked by the initial news of the fire. I've been around animals since high school. One thing I learned is darkness changes to game with large animals. The most calm animal can get very aggressive in darkness. It was awesome that the lead bull brought the herd to their safe place which was away from the fire fighters. Another blessing was the rain needed to bring the pasture back to life. Here in ND we burn fields ever fall after harvest. It is part of the natural cycle of prairie life. No animals lost, no structures lost. No folks hurt. That's a win win out of disaster.

Sorry to hear about the fire. No loss of life or major property, which is a great thing. Praises for that. Need to till the burnt area and seed with new grass for the Bison. If you are in a "High Fire" alert you don't burn, even if it is okay. Big Joe is a fantastic Alpha to lead the herd to a safe place. Need to give him and them some cubes and lots of scratches just above his nose. Let him know he was a good boy. The rain will make sure there won't be a re-sparking of the pasture. Be well Dusty!!

If there's another possible silver lining to this, is that the burn off and the rain should help the grass grow back better than before. What a scare! So glad there was no serious damage. Yesterday’s local news was the escape of 11 bison, one of which was killed by a vehicle. Vehicle totaled, driver fine. 20” of snow on the ground and a ski tow & a Nordic trail system had to be closed. They eventually tired enough to be herded home with a snowmobile.

Winds were so hard on 3/17 here where I'm at in west central Texas, where winds were reported up to 25 mph here, and it's super dry here too, as we haven't had rain since the fall of 2021 and any thoughts of rain sometimes go around us and we don't get any, so totally understand the scare of fire. We also had several cities volunteer fire dept's out fighting fires yesterday here. So glad Joe brought his herd into the barn area so they'd be safe.

I am so glad things worked out so well. Next year you might find a richer grass growing! Also, I have seen fires pop up in areas away from the main fire because of grass root system was just so dry that it shrunk up enough to have a little space with oxygen in it. The oxygen helped the fire to spread underground. (I hope I explained it clearly)

I have seen these type fires flare up out of nowhere very scary, unsure how long it can take but I have seen them pop up a week or more after initial fires were out. Good possibility that's what happened. I won't burn a rooted tree because of this I want roots above ground just to be safe, even if I have to pull it just to be sure it's not burning underground.

Hi Dusty. That depression/hole obviously was sheltering a coal, and the wind picked it up. Thank the Lord the rain was right behind. Last month my neighbor lost his workshop- I woke up when the propane tanks exploded- but the volunteer fire department was there quickly, and kept all of the surrounding buildings from catching. I baked brownies and cookies for the fire department and my unfortunate neighbor. Just part of life; no people or stock harmed is the most important thing.

You know that is really scary. My poor uncle’s barn caught on fire. It had all his hay and farming equipment. There was nothing he could do about it. He couldn’t even begin to touch it with the hose. By the time the fire trucks got there it had all burned down to the ground.

Embers can fly seriously long distance, while smoldering roots is very Likely, could also be a loose ember from some person with a fireplace that doesn't have a proper chimney cap, or has holes in their cap, can reignite your pile as well. pasture burns so fast you have to speed to try to get ahead of the darn thing. Dusty thinks that one of his previous burn piles may have begun smoldering. The winds picked up and a spark of flame was carried over to the dry pasture grass, which provided the fuel for a fast fire.

Grateful that critters and the barn are all okay! I love the network of friends and neighbors that were on top of things.
