The Poppy: A Symbol of Remembrance

The poppy is an enduring symbol of remembrance. Its origins lie in the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by Canadian soldier Colonel John McCrae, written following the death of a friend in May 1915.
National Museums Scotland's commemorative programme of events and exhibitions relating to the First World War concludes with an exhibition at the National War Museum at Edinburgh Castle exploring the story of the poppy. Through a variety of objects, photographs and interviews, The Poppy: A Symbol of Remembrance explores the manufacture of poppies in Scotland, the charitable work of the poppy appeal and presents a reflection on recent debates about what some regard as the politicisation of the poppy as a symbol. This film, which you can see in the exhibition, explores this topic further.
The Poppy: A Symbol of Remembrance is on at the National War Museum until 29 January 2019.
