The Power of a dramatic

In this short clip, we delve into chest resonance in female voices through extended and powerful training sessions with my talented student (Paula Doria, changed from mezzo soprano to dramatic soprano, with wonderful and powerful high notes, she is also one of our wonderful vocal coaches at The Old School of Singing ®)
We tackle a common issue in female vocal training: effectively using the chest voice. The key here is not just to lower the larynx but also to expand the pharynx simultaneously, avoiding the pitfalls of a merely lowered larynx which can lead to a throaty sound or ‘suono ingolato’-a term for a swallowed, muffled vocal quality.
By maintaining a balance between a lowered larynx and an expanded pharynx, we enhance the harmonics and awaken chest resonance. This resonance can be physically felt by touching your sternum, where the actual vibration occurs.
This technique can be particularly challenging for sopranos. I recall my esteemed teacher Mirella Freni frequently addressing this issue, emphasizing the importance of balance and focusing on the natural vibrational response of our resonance rather than merely the vocal color.
