I think my journey in Mathematics was essentially a search for dignity. The irony: It was a subject from which I would find none.

I like the analogy you created. If I may, I would add, being in a state of struggling will temper you and build your resilience to life itself. Each time you conquer your difficulties; you never forget the benevolence of your journey, the not giving up part, and the faith you develop deep within. So when you finally become the cream at the top, you’re carful to not be overly confident. Always reserving the right to struggle again.

I think people do not realise just how much work is involved in getting really good at something. Isaac Newton wrote, “If others would think as hard as I did, then they would get similar results.”

I decided to study physics and I'm really happy to see that it's not that terrible. Im having problem in both physics and maths and I'm going to be in college soon and I'll need them and Im so tired of feeling dumb in school. Thank you, sir.

I have plenty of stories with it. I've already given a lecture and I study math on a daily basis, but I feel so, so stupid when I can't solve the simplest thing. On the research I was enjoying this weekend I found a quote I really like: " Not knowing is not being dumb, but pretending you do is. " This is extremely relatable, at least to me, because I'd rather admit I'm certainly below average than to keep faking that I'm smart and hiding myself from the truth. Also, if I were above average, I guess I wouldn't work hard to get better because I'd always be satisfied. Sometimes it's nice to be stupid.

This video came to me the instant I finished raging because I, as someone who seemingly has 0 issue with *understanding* and absorbing insane concepts in physics like quantum mechanics, or relativity, or anything, or some combination, and yet here I am, absolutely eating sh!t when it comes to idiotically basic algebra, and graphing, my brain refuses to cooperate, I can't see anything but fog, and I am doing severely horribly both in terms of progress, and my self-esteem and mental health. After I was done with all that, I flicked open youtube feeling incredibly depressed and demotivated, and THIS, was not only a video in my list of recommended videos, but it was a video that I almost instantaneously flicked to with my eyes the moment the page finished loading, as if I.. knew it would be there? Somehow? And needless to say everything you said in the video was so one - to - one with me that I honestly didn't know whether to laugh, to cry, to feel terrified, or what. Bottom line I felt, and still feel insanely profound, especially how this video was also JUST uploaded, AND I am not subscribed to you. And honestly genuinely, I would like to extend you a heartfelt thank you to you, this video came at a time, and had an effect on me more relevant and profound and positive than you could imagine. And needless to say, you earned a subscriber, I will take it easy for the rest of the night now, and go over the material maybe once more, but later, and casually when I am calmer, and I will keep going ,and keep grinding. Thank you.

Math Sorcerer you have had the opportunity to pursue mathematics and become a professor. This is the luxury of being a civilian. You have had the opportunity to experience your path and you were not owned. I served in the military and my life has been dictated and destroyed by the federal government. And anything after that I have had too help others from the failing system. I would not know what it is like to have my life to myself to do what I want to do such as an engineer or physician? You have been blessed to have been able to have had the opportunity of Equality and you have been able to experience it.

I’m totally way below average when it comes to math! Even a newborn child is smarter than me because we know all the maths when we’re born plus 27 languages that sadly aren’t nurtured when we’re young children 😢

Very interesting video. If I had one wish that would magically change universities, it would be to split up the teaching part from the evaluating part. That is, the person who does the tutoring would not be the person who does the testing and grading. There were so many times I did not want to reveal my ignorance in front of my professor, since he or she would be doing the grading at the end of the course. The other thing is that first impressions count. ("You never get a second chance to make a first impression!") So if the first impression one makes is that one is dumb, it seems to me that there is an anchoring bias that comes into play, which would not happen if the grader was not around to see how dumb I was on the first day of the course.

It was a below grade level student. who was capable of explaining to me how to do work out a question involving fractions. I was appalled at the way a few "bright " students a few years later answered my question when I forgot how to do problems involving fractions. " Oh yeah" and "Today is Sunday,you don't have to do your home work now". The dumbest students are the ones that only study to pass tests and exams.

To be frank, you have to be self-aware to know you’re not the smartest person in the room. So if you think you’re really below-average and no psychologist has ever told you that, then you might just be average.

I'd say there's power in others underestimating me. I cant understand how others can not read others emotions It boggles my mind time and again how they fail to read facial expressions gestures or pick up what someone is telling them bluntly Dumb is a word that is obsolete because people do have different types of intelligence

Do you not think that there's a point past which you can only get with enough talent? Or do you think that the difference between talented/smart people and people who struggle is the work that they have to put in or the time that it'll take them? Greetings from germany

hi math sorcerer! i know you most likely will not see this, but I am 15 years old in my second year of high school currently, and ive been struggling with an issue. i always study a lot (like 3-4 hours a day) a few weeks before my tests, however, I always seem to get avergae grades, or even do worse than. my friends who don't study. I enjoy math and the process of solving questions, however i am lacking at grasping the concept and remembering how to do things. do you have any advice you could give for people like me? thank you so much for posting all the time, your vids rlly help me. have a great day! - anonymous banana
@immagrande62548 сағат бұрын
Hi Banana, math teacher here 👋 I would recommend after getting home you do all the exercices at home, that you did with your teacher at school. You should work 1hour per day on average for math if you want to improve your level. Also, you should work on alternative problems that you can find elsewhere (ie if you study trigo with your school teacher, you should do more exercises at home and harder ones). If you do this, you should see an improvement.
