The Power of Originality in Photography //
I’ve just started watching Stranger Things series 3, and made me think about how nostalgia is often used to add emotive impact to contemporary art and media.
The trouble with nostalgia is that it’s selective in what it remembers and the response is subjective to the person experiencing it. In short, it’s not real. It’s merely a feeling - and one that will only resonate with the group of people for which those particular nostalgic triggers are relevant.
Stranger Things is good not because it relies on nostalgia, but because underneath, its narrative building blocks are solid. The characters have depth, the plot is engaging and the direction is captivating.
While it’s important to study the groundbreaking and iconic photographic work of the past, we won’t move forward by simply attempting to emulating a nostalgic aesthetic. We’ve already got Henri Cartier-Bresson , Vivian Maier, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams. We don’t need them again.
Groundbreaking work from the past was groundbreaking because it broke ground. Because it was doing something new.
Photography that excites me these days is when I see something new. When I see approaches that I haven’t seen before. And I think this resonates with me so much because firstly, it expands my understanding of what photography can be secondly, it feels authentic.
Nostalgic style can be used to great effect to communicate a message, but style without substance creates work that fades from memory pretty quickly.

It made me stop and think when you talk about Nostalgia being subjective, I haven't really thought about it, but when you are shooting a project for someone say family portraits you can't use what feels nostalgic to you are personal self need to figure out what triggers that feeling in your clients... Or at least I think that's what you're saying. Nostalgia becomes a blunt instrument If you don't understand how to use it effectively for your primary audience. Thank you for sharing such an interesting thought oh, it really got me thinking about my own photography thank you.

It takes time to collect thoughts and express them in a organized, concise manner. Most of the best youtube channels (that I follow at least) do not post weekly, or even longer, but when they do post, it's almost always gold. The way YT works is not conducive to quality unless you're part of a team and doing it as a full time job -- which kind of goes against what KZbin started out as in the first place and made it so interesting.

I dunno. I can think of a few worse things. Getting glass shards in your eye. Needles under your fingernails. Boy Bands (unless, as this video points out, you grew up with boy bands). Wasps. And even if you're talking just photography: Corrupted memory cards/damaged film. Broken lenses. A camera that fails. A "sharp image with a fuzzy concept" is still worlds better than no image at all. 85% of art is the ability to B.S. You can spin any garbage concept into Pure Genius of Artistic Vision (caps because drama) if you say the right things to the right people.

I honestly can't get enough of your videos. I absolutely love everything about them. The music, production, writing... just seems so high quality. You talk about photography as an art form rather than a past time. As a (very) casual hobbyist this makes it harder for me to relate to the amazing work you cover but I love your videos all the more for exactly that reason. I find myself watching this, the chiaroscuro, lens choice, and cheating videos over and over. It's so refreshing and inspiring to learn about famous photographers and how photography has developed (pun fully intended) over time. Please please keep making more videos. I can imagine a lot of work must go into them so no rush, I'll be here patiently waiting

Great video. I've been working on trying to duplicate "that film feel" in Lightroom myself; not because it fits with a particular style of work I do, but because it's a great way to learn what's really going on under the hood in a photo. Congrats on a well deserved 200K - you have a perspective and insight that most of us would just overlook plus an "attention to detail" skill many of us could learn from. (I have never "consciously" tried to build nostalgia into my photos or post processing, but now you have me thinking that it may be a subconscious tendency the same as selecting my favorite music on the radio. It's definitely good to be aware that it may be holding me back from being creative & "new," which is an area that I know I have plenty of room to improve. Thanks!

Jamie, thank you for the insight. You are spot on in relating nostalgia to photography as to how it might affect your photography style. Thank you. I will keep in mind your wonderful advise. All the best mate. Keep up the good work.

Yet again another great video, thanks for all that effort you put always into them, making them really fun and instructive to watch. I also like your more philosophical or theoretic driven approach to photography and the lessons you create by that.
