I've learned that science can also be beneficial when you want to be a good support system for someone. In the past when people would tell me about their struggled, I'd immediately think of how to respond or what advice to give. I've realized that this left me from truly hearing them out. Sometimes when someone vents to you, they're not necessarily looking for advice or words of encouragement. They simply just need someone to lend an ear. One thing that I've found helpful is to hear them out, let them get what they need off their chest and then ask "How can I support you in the best way at thus moment?" This gives them an opportunity to figure out what kind of support they're looking for and it let's them feel heard. This also makes it easier for me to support them and be there for them in the best way possible
