The Polestar 2 hatchback, an all-electric vehicle developed by Volvo's EV subsidiary, Polestar, possesses the sleek appearance of a luxurious sedan like the Volvo S60, but is specifically designed for a future without gas. In its lowest trim level, the base rear-wheel-drive Polestar 2 offers 295 horsepower and an estimated range of 320 miles. Additionally, there are two all-wheel-drive options: one with 416 horsepower and another, known as the Performance Pack model, with 449 horsepower. Both all-wheel-drive models have a claimed range of 276 miles. Another advantage the Polestar 2 has over Tesla is its more traditional cockpit, which features a regular instrument cluster and software supported by Google's Android. While the Polestar 2 has progressively improved its features, range, and horsepower year after year, it needs to continue growing to effectively compete against emerging electric vehicles like the BMW i4 and Hyundai Ioniq 6. To enhance its all-electric 2 for the 2024 model, Polestar has introduced a larger battery and updated hardware, resulting in increased range. The previous single-motor front-wheel-drive configuration has been transformed into a rear-wheel-drive setup, capable of achieving 30 additional miles, totaling 300 miles of claimed range. The dual-motor Polestar 2 models now offer 270 miles of range, an increase of 10 miles from the previous year. Furthermore, the upgraded motors have resulted in improved horsepower across all levels: 295 horsepower for the single-motor version (previously 231) and 416 horsepower for the dual-motor version (previously 408). Polestar has also adjusted the torque ratio, prioritizing output from the rear motor. The Performance Pack comes with updated 20-inch forged wheels, while the option of Michelin all-season tires is now available for the 19-inch wheels. The larger battery now supports maximum DC-fast-charging speeds of up to 205 kW. The starting price of the 2024 Polestar Polestar 2 is $51,300, with the highest trim and options reaching $64,400. The electrical system supports fast charging up to 205 kilowatts with the larger battery, and Polestar claims that the 75.0 kWh battery can be recharged from zero to 80 percent in 40 minutes. In terms of range, when equipped with 19-inch wheels, the single-motor model is estimated to achieve 320 miles, while with 20-inch wheels, the range drops to 307 miles. The dual-motor version is rated at 276 miles with 19-inch wheels, and 266 miles with 20-inch wheels. The dual-motor Performance variant achieves an EPA-estimated range of 247 miles. The Polestar 2 lineup begins with a single motor delivering 295 horsepower and 361 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. All-wheel-drive models feature two motors, providing a combined output of 416 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. For thrill seekers, there is an optional Performance Pack that offers 449 peak horsepower for maximum acceleration. In testing, the single-motor Polestar 2 Plus reached 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, while the dual-motor version achieved it in 4.1 seconds. The interior of the Polestar 2 incorporates wood, fabric, and plastic in a simple yet aesthetically pleasing manner. It has a modern appearance with clean lines, a minimalist color palette, and minimal switchgear. Some elements, such as the steering-wheel buttons and knurled start knob, are borrowed from Volvo models, but the overall design is less busy. To align with the electric powertrain, Polestar adorns the interior with eco-friendly vegan fabric, although leather is available as an option. The power-operated liftgate leads to a moderately sized cargo area, providing 14 cubic feet of space. For additional storage, there is another cubic foot of capacity in the front trunk. Inside the cabin, the driver is greeted by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a centrally positioned touchscreen resembling an iPad in portrait orientation. The interface is similar to other modern systems, featuring a subdivided box displaying different categories of apps, including navigation, phone, and audio. By grouping similar apps into specific corners of the screen, Polestar aims to make it easier for users to locate the desired functions and minimize distractions.
