The Practical "How To" of Prenatal Genetic Screening for Down Syndrome
Dr. Sylvie Lanois
Prenatal genetic screening in BC is widely available and accessible, and should be offered to all pregnant women as early as possible in their prenatal care. BC has adopted a serum-based approach to prenatal genetic screening with nuchal translucency ultrasound added or women at higher risk of having a fetus with Down Syndrome or trisomy 18, and women with twin pregnancies. By the end of this session, the participants will be familiar with 1) how screening is done in British Columbia, 2) the importance of offering screening to a patient in the first trimester counseling to help her decide if she wants screening, 3) how to order screening and 4) what to do when a screen is positive.
