Hello! I really enjoy your videos and believe you are one of the few teaching what the Buddha actually taught. I did want to clarify whether the 8 precepts are only for Sotāpanna, or is that one of the final steps needed to enter the stream? Many thanks for the time you take to make these videos.

Hey Cody! I would say that they are more for those who wish to attain Jhanas/Brahmaviharas. In a sense, they are (partially) disjunct from Stream Entry. While a Sotapanna has a natural inclination away from sensuality and towards renunciation, for him, rules & observances have no real "meaning" as he has seen that the work is yet elsewhere to be done. He will very likely at least start keeping them after a while but he does not need to bind himself to them. To _attain_ the Right View, they can be very beneficial though, as they show you the shortcomings of the less "extremely harmful" but more subtle kinds of cravings (lust being slightly blameworthy but slow to fade). However, they are not "mandatory" in the strict sense either. I would still keep them though if Stream Entry is my goal as they very much support your way there!

@@TheDhammaHub Thank you for replying! This is good to know. I am intent on Stream Entry and have undertaken the 8 precepts, but I have a wife and children and it feels like I am abandoning them. It would be very good if I didn't have to do this! I fear that the sense of abandonment may lead to me giving up the endeavor as I already feel a lot of guilt.

@@codybutcher968 Ironically, Saif and I have recorded a video on exactly that topic just yesterday ;D it will probably be released somewhere in August so that might help you too^^ In short: you do not abandon your family "physically", you abandon your dependence _on_ your family as a "source of safety". You no longer suffer when there is change and alteration in them. This is what renunciation means. That said, certain behaviors you will give up. Once the value of renunciation has been established in you, your actions will fall into place accordingly. We can only really repeatedly go to eat chocolate every day when we value that. Once the value has been replaced, our actions will slowly cool down in that regard.

@@TheDhammaHub I will definitely be on the look out for that video! I think I have noticed what you are talking about. I was practicing a lot more restraint previously and noticed when I was "accepting" the arisen prospect of delight in whatever was present at the time. I had recently watched a video by Hillside Hermitage where Ajahn Nyanamoli said "you are taking shelter in a burning building" and I could not stop thinking that. It did feel like I was trying to take shelter in it, to feel safe. Of course it had been undermined by the knowledge that it could not remain, as if I now saw the fire. Would it be possible to continue this in a less public space, if you are able to?

Where would you place yourself on this line? How do you know that this is the only path, aside from the suttas? Do you think that there is value in practicing to experience the 'sensual' jhanas (regarding those starting with attention to piti as described by Leigh Brasington)? For example, to reinforce a habit of seclusion or improve concentration ability.
@TheDhammaHub
@TheDhammaHub 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! What I explained is straight from the Suttas, I have just formulated it in a different way that hopefully appeals more to a modern audience. And I know that there is just "One single Path" as Dhamma practice is all about _stopping_ to do certain things. "Stopping" has only ever a single "destination". All Paths that ever hope to achieve that goal must _also_ "do" this (and maybe a possibly large number of "extra steps" that are usually "fluff"). Concerning Leigh and other Jhanas, I have a video in planning on this.. I don't think a short comment will satisfy as an answer. But in very short: while those Jhanas do indeed "transcend the 5 _physical_ senses, they are still bound by the mind. There remain _lustful intentions_ (sensuality) towards those states, while the Buddha Jhanas are also free from that. You can easily "test" if your Jhana is sensual if you "force yourself" to stop them for a longer time. That is when craving for states surfaces. So in short, many modern Jhanas can help you transcend the 5 physical senses, but bear a very strong risk to make you "addicted" to the more mental pleasures. The problem with that is, that craving as a whole has just shifted, but remains _just as strong as before_ - just with a different object... But again, I like to answer that as a video in the future

@@George_Smith Hey George! I very much agree that those two words are not the best, but I have no better options - if you have one, feel free to share them! I am obviously not advertising inactivity or passivity, otherwise, I would not highlight the necessity for ardency, striving, and effort so much! What I try to say is that a practitioner should learn to only do those actions that are without greed, aversion, and delusion and as a _result_ without self. Those actions "do themselves" and do not really qualify to be called actions, yet the body is very active indeed. All the actions that are rooted in greed, aversion, and delusion DO produce that sense of self and they are very active in both senses. I "prescribe" the stilling of activities that are rooted in greed, aversion, and delusion and mean that with both words. In such a state, there can only be joy, lightness, and equanimity. That said, in a youtube comment, I feel like I don't have time to answer in the necessary level of detail and still provide benefit, thus I use a phrasing that might lack precision but might at least reach the questioner.

@@TheDhammaHub you do a good job of it as well haha but mainly I asked because I'm curious about somthing you said in this video. Which was that you only need to relate to 1 sutta and follow it until the end get to the right view . When watching your lectures I know that you quote a few different suttas but they were for support of the concept you were conveying. I will read more suttas but I like how you are living person with this view who is able to explain certian hangups with my uncertainties. Do I understand correctly, that "seeing intention" refers to asking "why" for everything I do to the point when I come to the edge of my understanding of universe/morality and realizing/pushing those boundaries?
@TheDhammaHub
@TheDhammaHub Жыл бұрын
Hey! You can surely think about intentions in terms of "why" you do something! If you repeat that for a while, you will notice that everything you usually do has one of three roots: greed, aversion, or the urge to distract yourself (delusion). If you ask further why _that_ is there, you will likely fail to find an answer if you are self-honest. You cannot _choose_ what you like, dislike, or distract yourself from and when you see that rightly, you see Anicca where it matters.

On this channel, I distinguish between "pleasure Jhana" and "Buddha Jhana". when I link Jhana to sensuality, I usually refer to concentration techniques that have pleasures as their primary goal and output as opposed to the Buddha Jhanas that produce relief and relief-born joy etc - I usually am quite strict on stating the difference in most videos, maybe I forgot here^^

It feels like an oxymoron to become a “noble one” - isn’t that just identification with a new “egoic” cloth? It comes across as long pretentious and an air of superiority
@TheDhammaHub
@TheDhammaHub 11 ай бұрын
It is one out of many possible translation^^ It is simply practical to have a word for those who have seen the Dhamma and are currently practicing for Nibbana. In the Suttas, the term "sekha" is often used to describe such people and is simply means "one in training". Yet, that word could have so many different meanings nowadays that I don't find it practical anymore. That said, in the end it is just a word. It can _sound_ (be interpreted) as "egoistic or arrogant" but if the person has seen the Dhamma, then there is no attachment to such labels usually. Or if there is, there is so much less than before
