An institution so powerful that someone finally says, "Enough!" and eliminates that institution which will, regardless of this dismissal, live throughout history by remembrance of its power is most definitely a powerful institution indeed.

Funny, just today I was thinking the Roman Empire could have survived a lot longer had they sorted out these Praetorians. Pertinax could have reigned for years!

11:15 just to put this in perspective, Augustus is sometimes described as being bit clumsy what comes to his people skills. So you can imagine that what sort of character Tiberius was, when Augustus basically thought "sheesh, that guy needs to work on his social skills". Augustus in fact tried to offset this by having another guy named Germanicus to appointed as Tiberius's successor. And predictably, said Germanicus died in very suspicious circumstances sometime after Augustus.

I wonder if Sempronius Denaus was used as Peragon of Virtue by later Emperors or super loyal guards. To be the one guy who stood by his oath when the Guard was at its most corrupt, deserves a touch of mytholgizing.

On the rise of Vespasian: Vitellius' army was also defeated at Bedriacum, and the survivors took refuge in the nearby city of Cremona, then the biggest and most important in northern Italy whose inhabitants couldn't lock the gates in time... So the Praetorians destroyed the city, and by the time Vespasian had it rebuilt Milan had taken Cremona's place as the capital of northern Italy.

So when coming up with the 40k Custodies they basicly just looked at the Praetorians and did the opposite, added obscenely over expensive power armor, sterilized them, then fed them to the child murdermaker machines to give them extra organs, blasted them with continuous hypno-mind conditioning that MUST have somehow incorporated a strange mix of jazz, elevator music, and death metal into the process, then finally introduced them (in a suspiciously unreluctantly way) to the fact that demons exist, hell exists, and that no matter what they do, what they say, where they go, nor who they protect - they and everyone else has a complimentary one way ticket to that destination whether they like it or not before finally beating the five yearold they qere into the adult 5 yearolds with a need to please their massively abusive in-no-way-whatsoever-a-god emperor. Ave Imperator? ⚔️😈🤪😇⚔️
