The President Vanishes 1934

Some Captains of Industry plot to get the USA involved in a European war for profit. They hire a "true believer" right wing revolutionary with his "grey shirts" to intimidate the public while having newspapers run the slogan "Save America's Honor." Congress is convinced while the President is not, but can he change their destructive path to a bloody war?
Surprisingly interesting story with plot twists (if your expectations are low). Fairly entertaining vision of America manipulated by oligarchs with neo-nazi techniques. Of course, it couldn't happen here and now...

THE PRESIDENT VANISHES (1934) was based on the novel of the same name; the uncredited author was Rex Stout, who was far better known for his many novels featuring overweight investigator Nero Wolfe.

And Edward Arnold, playing Sec. of War Wardell here, was the iconic detective in Meet Nero Wolfe in 1936.

Thanks for posting this. I read the book years ago and didn't know there was a movie made from it. The story gives an interesting perspective on American attitudes toward the growing tensions in Europe, at a time when no one could know anything about WWII and its aftermath.

@@l337pwnage The book in question was written before WWII. And people who wrote books written before WWII didn't know they were writing before WWII, and knew nothing specific about it or its aftermath. And Tucker Carson's advice isn't worth a warm bucket of spit.

@@gshenaut It obviously was written before WWII, which is why it was probably memory holed. I skimmed the movie and saw pretty quick why they wouldn't want something like this to be popular now, even tho it tries come off as, apparently, anti-people-who-wear-shirts, lol. This movie would require significant re-writing to fit in with modern propaganda.

Him disappearing in 1934 might have saved us a lot of problems, not that they don't, probably, always have more puppets lined up to take his place.
